quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 'International Man of Mystery', what was Doctor Evil doing when Austin found him at his lair (after aborting the underground missile)?

Answer: Feeding Mr. Bigglesworth

"I want chicken, I want liver, Meow Mix, Meow Mix, please deliver."
2. Despite his request for sharks with laser beams, what was Doctor Evil reduced to using, and why?

Answer: Sea bass, because sharks are a protected species

Number Two: "We couldn't get sharks. Shortly after you were frozen, they were put on the endangered species list. It would have taken months to clear up all the red tape."

Jay Roach (director of the "Austin Powers" movie) reveals on the Goldmember DVD that they couldn't afford the animatronic sharks, so they used a substitute.
3. In what condition was Mustafa, after being cast into the flaming pit?

Answer: Very badly burnt

Despite attempting to kill him, it took burning and multiple gunshots before Dr. Evil was rid of Mustafa. This was probably not because Mustafa was tough, but because he was most likley too stupid to die.
4. When Austin leaps from the clutches of the Fembots, what does the leading Fembot say to him (which is then echoed by her compatriots)?

Answer: "You can't resist us, Mister Powers"

Austin: "Au contraire, baby, it's you who can't resist me." He then lights cigarettes for the all ladies with a blowtorch.
5. Vanessa introduces Austin to some seemingly ordinary objects at the headquarters. What does Austin believe the tootpaste is?

Answer: Plastic explosive

He also believes the tootbrush to be the detonator and the floss to be garrot wire. Vanessa responds "Well, there have been some marvelous advances in the field of dentistry since you were frozen." Austin is embarassed, and hides his teeth as best he can.
6. What two things does Austin Powers fear?

Answer: Nuclear war and carnies

Austin: "There's only two things I'm afraid of,and one is nuclear war."
7. What is Austin having difficulty doing immediately after the unfreezing process?

Answer: Carrying on an interior monologue

When introduced to Vanessa Kensington, daughter of his former partner Mrs. Kensington, Austin proceeds to speculate as to Vanessa Kensington's sexual prowess, i.e. "I'll bet she shags like a minx.", under the misapprehension he is having an internal monologue. He also has difficulty "controlling THE VOLUME OF MY VOICE".
8. On to "The Spy Who Shagged Me." What is the maiden name of the agent of Dr. Evil who confronts Austin before he can get to Ms. Shagwell?

Answer: Spitz

Agent: "My name is Robin Swallows, maiden name Spitz."
Austin: Well, what is it, baby? Spitz or Swallows?"
9. As they fall down the outside of the building towards the ground, what does Robin, Dr. Evil's agent from Austin's pad, say to Austin?

Answer: "The fall will kill us both, Powers!"

Austin then proceeds to use her to break his fall, walking away generally unharmed.
10. Which of these weapons is NOT used by Dr. Evil's assassin in an attempt to take Austin's life?

Answer: Flame thrower

Some would think a bazooka is a little excessive.
11. What do the henchmen on Dr. Evil's island appear to be seeing?

Answer: Felicity pulling things out of Austin's back side

Yes, the shadow gag, as old as comedy itself, was apparently a favourite of Mike Myers. A similar gag made an appearance in "Goldmember", with the same henchman returning to see what looks like Austin giving birth.
12. In the scene where Austin and Felicity arrive on Dr. Evil's island, which Bond movie is parodied?

Answer: Dr. No

Yes, the famous scene with Ursula Andress in a bikini in the first Bond movie was the inspiration for this scene, in which Ms Shagwell stands up, beautiful and glorious, and the image is shattered by hairy, slightly flabby Austin arriving, also in a bikini.
13. On to "Austin Powers in Goldmember", now. In the scene where Austin rescues his father from Goldmember, Austin and his father converse in "English English", made up of Cockney rhyming slang. What is the slang used here for crazy?

Answer: All sixes and sevens

I don't pretend to understand the logic behind this phrase, but I found it pretty funny nonetheless.
14. When Austin visits Dr. Evil in his prison in Geneva, Dr. Evil makes a reference to a popular movie from the early nineties. What was it?

Answer: The Silence of the Lambs

A discrete, yet amusing, reference to the scene where Agent Starling (Jodie Foster) visits Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) in his prison cell. Starling tries to get information about serial killer "Buffalo Bill," to which Dr. Lecter replies "Quid pro quo, Clarice." Here, Dr. Evil repeats this famed line, to which Austin responds "Yes... squid pro row." The reference doesn't end there, with Dr. Evil asking for a transfer to another prison, much like the request made by Dr. Lecter.
15. What is Goldmember's real name?

Answer: Johann Van der Smut

Dr. Evil reveals Goldmember's name while revealing his plan at the beginning of the movie. Not only does Dr. Evil say it aloud, it is also written on the bottom of the projection.
16. As the dancing sequence begins in the opening scene of the movie, what two Hollywood celebrities appear to do flip-flops (for lack of a better phrase) past Austin and the assembled crew/dancers?

Answer: Steven Spielberg and film crew

All these stars were in the opening scene, as part of the 'movie-within-a-movie' that was being made.
17. What was the name of the movie being made about Austin Powers, which starred Tom Cruise in the title role?

Answer: Austinpussy

This movie provided a very neat opening and conclusion for the actual film, and contained several major cameos, including John Travolta as Goldmember, Kevin Spacey as Dr. Evil, and Danny DeVito as Mini-Me.
18. During the scene in which Austin attacks a newly-defected Mini-Me, what does Mini-Me do which results in a flashback to "The Spy Who Shagged Me"?

Answer: Made a peace sign

Austin and Mini-Me have had two fight scenes since Mini-Me arrived, but I doubt if we'll see any more, now that the two are on the same side. On another note, Verne Troyer, the man who plays Mini-Me, is also a stuntman, and was pushing Jay Roach to let him be in the bag whilst being flung around by Austin. Jay preferred to use a robotic dummy.
19. What is tattooed on Dr. Evil's butt, as shown on the submarine in the final fight with Goldmember?

Answer: E Diddy

Mike Myers and Jay Roach (director of the "Austin Powers" series) wanted Dr. Evil to be referred to this in the film, but were unable to do so due because they were unable to get P. Diddy to agree.
20. What can be seen on either side of Mr. Roboto when he is on Dr. Evil's sub?

Answer: Two large red balls

There is no apparent reason for this in the movie, but in the audio commentary on the DVD version, Mike Myers suggests that the sub, in the shape of Dr. Evil, is rather 'anatomically correct'. Use your imagination.
21. Now some questions on the series as a whole. In "International Man of Mystery", a guard at Virtucon is run over by a steam roller. Later, in "Austin Powers in Goldmember", the same actor appears again. What role does he play?

Answer: Queen's guard holding the medals at the knighting ceremony

It took me a while to realize from where I knew this actor, whose name is Michael McDonald. He is one example of this series' habit of using the same actors. McDonald also appears in "The Spy Who Shagged Me" as a NATO officer monitoring "the Kreplakistani situation".
22. Rob Lowe appeared in the second (and, briefly, the third) "Austin Powers" movies as the young Number #2. What role did he have in the first movie, if any?

Answer: Friend of John Smith

Rob appears in the scene at Hooters, where a party of guys is waiting for their friend John Smith, because it is his stag party. Rob also takes the phone call about John's untimely decapitation by an ill-tempered, mutated sea-bass.
23. In which Austin Powers film do Ming Tea make their debut appearance?

Answer: Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery

Ming Tea actually preceded the "Austin Powers" series, and was where Mike Myers first developed the character of Austin Powers. Ming Tea made their movie debut in the closing credits of "Man of Mystery", playing their song "BBC". The only proof is the name "Ming Tea" printed on the bass drum skin.
24. What is the normal occupation of the man who plays Mr. Roboto?

Answer: Chef

This is stated on the audio commentary of the "Goldmember" DVD, where Mike Myers tells us that Mr. Roboto is, in reality, a master teppinyaki chef, a form of Japanese cooking. His real name is Nobu Matsuhisha.
25. Now a test of your perception: What continent is most frequently visible on Dr. Evil's globe of the world in his underground lair in "International Man of Mystery"?

Answer: Africa

OK, that was probably too subtle. Maybe you've learned something from this.
