Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The movie begins with a British soldier, Jody, at a carnival. He soon gets kidnapped by the Irish Republican Army. What is it about Jody that endears him to Fergus, one of his captors?

Answer: his sense of humor

They share a laugh while Fergus is helping him pee. It is Fergus's sympathy for Jody which causes him to question everything he has been doing for the IRA, and drives his actions for the rest of the film. Jody was played by Forest Whitaker, who went on to direct "Waiting to Exhale" and "Hope Floats", among others.
2. Why does Jody want Fergus to go "across the water" and find his sweetheart, Dil?

Answer: to tell Dil that Jody was thinking about Dil while imprisoned

Jody believes that he is never again going to see Dil. Again, this is what takes the film in an entirely different direction shortly thereafter, until Fergus's past resurfaces.
3. What new name does Fergus assume after he leaves Belfast and gets a job at a construction site?

Answer: Jimmy

He ends up working for a slimy boss, who treats him like a peon and doesn't even call him by his right name. If only he knew what Fergus used to do for a living!
4. Where does Dil work?

Answer: a hair salon

Fergus and Dil first meet when he comes into Dil's salon for a haircut. Afterwards he follows Dil to The Metro where they flirt across the bar.
5. A cover version of which of these 1980s dance hits is played in The Metro and included on the soundtrack?

Answer: "Let the Music Play"

"Let the Music Play" by Shannon is the 1983 hit which is credited for reviving dance music after an early-'eighties disco backlash. This new version was produced for the soundtrack by The Pet Shop Boys and is performed by singer Carol Thompson. Another song performed in the club is "White Cliffs of Dover".
6. Jude is the vengeful IRA terrorist who first set the trap for Jody, and who has come back to force Fergus into a suicide mission. Where does Jude first reappear?

Answer: Fergus's apartment

Jude shows up in all the places listed, but it is the biggest jolt to Fergus--and the audience--when he comes home after an evening with Dil and finds Jude waiting for him. (Based on an earlier scene, it appeared that Jude was dead.) She then proceeds to shadow his every move.
7. Who is the target of the assassination plot in the film's climax?

Answer: some judge

Fergus asks Jude who the man is that they're going to shoot. She replies, "Some judge." The old Fergus would not have questioned it. This shows how the IRA operates not just on their beliefs, but by random acts of violence. She does not even know the man's name, or what her mission is supposed to accomplish.
8. What story is retold at the end of the film?

Answer: The Frog and the Scorpion

One of the themes of the film is "It's in my nature", which is the theme of the story Jody first tells Fergus as he's guarding him. Fergus passes it on at the end of the movie. It was in Fergus's nature to have compassion, just as it was in the scorpion's nature to sting.
9. What classic country song plays just as the film is ending, before the fade to credits and the title song?

Answer: "Stand by Your Man"

Lyle Lovett's quirky cover version of "Stand By Your Man" was used. It actually fits in very well with the film's odd conclusion. The movie also started with yet another ironic classic tune, "When a Man Loves a Woman", with a panoramic opening shot and blood red titles.
10. Finally, and you knew this was coming, just what was it that made everyone want to go see "The Crying Game"?

Answer: a secret big surprise halfway through the film

One of the taglines for the film was, "The movie everyone is talking about...but no one is revealing its secrets." Magazine articles about the movie were often preceded with, "Do not read this article until you've seen the movie!" People who knew a surprise was forthcoming claim to have figured it out beforehand (yeah right). Those who went early on, simply to see a good art-house film, were the ones whose jaws dropped. (Yours truly did not know. You could have heard a pin drop in the theatre.) Not since people wanted to find out what Rosebud was in "Citizen Kane" had there ever been such a phenomenon.

But no way will the secret be repeated here! Thanks for playing--and check out The Crying Game Part 2 quiz!
