Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the home town of the main character Micky Ward, seen at the beginning of the film?

Answer: Lowell

Lowell, Mass., where the Ward and Eklund families are from, and where the movie starts out, is where the state Golden Gloves amateur boxing championships were held during the time of this story, and is well remembered for its connection to boxing around the state.
2. What is the name of Micky Ward's brother who helps train him while trying to deal with drug problems and the hope of his own long awaited comeback?

Answer: Dicky Eklund

The first thing we see is their dynamic together as brothers at the very beginning of the movie while working on a road crew together. A great fighter in his own right, Dick or Dicky Eklund finished his professional career with a 19-10 record.
3. What is the nickname of Micky Ward's rapid fire opponent, Mike Mungin, in the first fight of the movie?

Answer: Machine Gun

Mike "Machine Gun" Mungin is the name announced by Michael Buffer of the massively built fighter in the first fight of the film. The loss of this fight was the cause of Mike considering giving up, to the dismay of his family and girlfriend. In reality, this fight had a slight weight difference in Mungin's favor which was exaggerated for the sake of the movie.

The real weights for this match were Mungin's 145 pounds to Ward's 136.5 pounds.
4. What is Micky Ward's nickname in the ring as announced by the legendary Michael Buffer for the last bout of the movie?

Answer: Irish

While there are a lot of interesting nicknames in boxing, few seem to fit a boxer so well as "Irish" Micky Ward, whose hard nosed style and toughness gave even more pride to the Irish American spectator. Micky's home town of Lowell, Mass. is known for its large Irish population similar to that of another better known town, the Massachusetts city of Boston.
5. What belt does Micky win in the last fight of the film?

Answer: WBU

After the Alphonso Sanchez match, the promoter comes in to the dressing room to tell Micky and his team that they can try for the WBU title. WBU stands for World Boxing Union and is a world championship title, although it is not considered a major belt but often referred to as an "alphabet title" by many.
6. Who is the last boxer that Micky Ward fights in the film? The fight takes place in London.

Answer: Shea Neary

Irish boxer Shea Neary is introduced as the WBU champion and as a European version of Arturo Gatti by the commentators in the film before the last fight. This fight is the climax of the movie, and provides an exciting ending. After his loss to Micky Ward, Neary only fought twice more, finishing 23-2 for his career.
7. What network airs a documentary film featuring Micky's brother using crack and showing the effects it has on his life?

Answer: HBO

This is shown in the movie during the scene where Dicky is in prison and he becomes upset while seeing its depiction of himself and his family. The film crew was accused of paying the participants while knowing the money may be used for illegal activities.
8. What weight division is Micky fighting in when he fights for the world title at the end of the movie?

Answer: welterweight

At the weigh in for the last fight during the movie, they announce that the match is for the welterweight championship of the world. Micky Ward fought at or lighter than 147 pounds, the welterweight limit, on many occasions and was generally considered a junior welterweight boxer in his prime.
9. What movie does Micky take Charlene to on their first date, and proceed to fall asleep during?

Answer: Belle Epoque

While walking in to the movie, a man mentions to the characters that "The New York Times" loved the film, to the seeming displeasure of our characters Micky and Charlene. Micky tries to play it off in the movie that it was a co-worker's suggestion from the road crew he works on.
10. What fighter does Micky Ward go on to have three epic battles with (mentioned at the end of the film but none of which are shown) that help define his career?

Answer: Arturo Gatti

After the last scene, a paragraph telling of the three epic Ward vs. Gatti fights comes on screen mentioning as well that it was Micky's first seven figure pay day. These three classic fights between great fighters are well worth watching whether you enjoy boxing or just liked the movie.

These battles between Ward and Gatti captivated a public that picked up on the Irish vs. Italian theme played upon when promoting these fights. Nonetheless, sportsmanship and respect were shown throughout this boxing trilogy. R.I.P. Arturo Gatti.
