Micky's home town of Lowell, Mass. is known for its large Irish population similar to that of another better known town, the Massachusetts city of Boston.

WBU stands for World Boxing Union and is a world championship title, although it is not considered a major belt but often referred to as an "alphabet title" by many.

Irish boxer Shea Neary is introduced as the WBU champion and as a European version of Arturo Gatti by the commentators in the film before the last fight. This fight is the climax of the movie, and provides an exciting ending. After his loss to Micky Ward, Neary only fought twice more, finishing 23-2 for his career.

After the last scene, a paragraph telling of the three epic Ward vs. Gatti fights comes on screen mentioning as well that it was Micky's first seven figure pay day. These three classic fights between great fighters are well worth watching whether you enjoy boxing or just liked the movie.

These battles between Ward and Gatti captivated a public that picked up on the Irish vs. Italian theme played upon when promoting these fights. Nonetheless, sportsmanship and respect were shown throughout this boxing trilogy. R.I.P. Arturo Gatti.
