Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the first encounter between the young Peter Clemenza and the future Godfather Vito Corleone, Clemenza asked a favor of Vito. What was it?

Answer: Hide guns

One night Vito was disturbed by a knocking at his tenement apartment's window. A man in the neighboring building asked if he was Italian, then tossed Vito a bundle and asked him to keep it. Vito later opened the package to discover several handguns. Thereafter, Clemenza loyally served the Corleone family until his death some forty years later.

The young Clemenza was played by actor Bruno Kirby and the elder capo was portrayed by Richard Castellano.
2. What gift did Clemenza acquire for Vito, in return for a favor?

Answer: Carpet

After Vito hid guns for him, a grateful Clemenza decided that the Corleone family needed a carpet for their bare apartment. Clemenza told Vito that a friend had given Clemenza a carpet and that all they needed to do was pick it up. Vito became suspicious when Clemenza had to break into the house and later had to draw his pistol when a policeman came to the door.
3. Mobsters are often given unflattering nicknames. By what name did Peter Clemenza come to be known?

Answer: Fat

Clemenza, Tessio and Vito started out as young hijackers in New York. Despite being overweight and appearing to be dimwitted, "Fat" Clemenza became a shrewd and merciless assassin for the Corleone family.
4. The movie-going public first met Peter Clemenza in the wedding scene near the beginning of "The Godfather". What was Clemenza doing at the time he was first seen on screen?

Answer: Dancing

After performing a lively ethnic Italian dance, a panting and profusely sweating Clemenza called for his soldier, Paulie, to bring him more wine, which he guzzled from a pitcher.
5. One morning, Clemenza's soldier, Paulie, picked him up at his suburban home. What did Mrs. Clemenza remind her husband to bring home?

Answer: Cannoli

In a suprisingly domestic scene, Clemenza was leaving his suburban home to go to 'work' one morning when his bathrobe-clad wife shouted to him to not forget to pick up dessert for that evening's supper.
6. One of Paulie's regular duties was as a driver and bodyguard for Don Vito Corleone. Paulie had called in sick the day the Don was shot and Sonny Corleone, convinced that Paulie had sold out his father, ordered him killed. What was Clemenza doing when his soldier Paulie was executed.

Answer: Urinating

As Paulie was chauffeuring Clemenza and Rocco, he was instructed to pull off the road so that Clemenza could take a leak. While his boss was relieving himself in the bushes, Rocco shot Paulie in the back of the head. Clemenza then gave Rocco the famous instruction, "leave the gun, take the cannoli".
7. While a number of the Corleone family soldiers were holed up together in anticipation of a bloody mob war with the Tatagglias, Clemenza gave Michael Corleone a domestic lesson. What did he show Michael how to do?

Answer: Cook

At the time, everyone still considered Michael a 'civilian' in the mob conflict that arose after the assassination attempt on Vito Corleone. To give Michael something to do, Clemenza showed him how to cook for a large group, including tips on browning garlic in olive oil and adding sugar and wine to the tomato sauce.
8. In an attempt to save his father's life, Michael Corleone said he would assassinate drug dealer Virgil Sollozzo and his bodyguard, police Captain McCluskey. Clemenza was assigned the task of getting a weapon to Michael. How did he accomplish this?

Answer: Hid a pistol in a bathroom.

Clemenza carefully selected and prepared the murder weapon for Michael's use. After taking a practice shot with the pistol, Michael commented that it was loud. Clemenza replied that he had made it loud so as to scare away any bystanders. Although he had been instructed to immediately drop the gun after shooting the two men, Michael carried the weapon across the restaurant before dropping it on the floor.
9. In a climactic sequence, Michael Corleone had all of his enemies killed. Clemenza was assigned to execute one of the heads of the other New York families. Where did he do his dirty work?

Answer: Elevator

There were several scenes of a huffing and puffing Clemenza jogging up flights of stairs carrying a large box. Ultimately, he pulled a shotgun from the container and fired two blasts into an elevator as its doors opened, killing rival mob boss Don Stracci and his bodyguard.
10. The loyal Clemenza's last act of violence in "The Godfather" was the execution of Carlo, Michael Corleone's brother-in-law and the father of Michael's recently baptized godson. How did Carlo die?

Answer: Strangulation

After being severely beaten by Carlo, Connie called her brother, which caused Sonny to fly into a rage and rush out after Carlo without his bodyguard team. Sonny was violently shot to death by multiple machine guns at a toll booth. Just before Carlo's execution, Michael extracted a confession from him that he had been recruited by the rival Don Barzini. Carlo, thinking that his punishment was a banishment from the family, innocently got into a car for a ride to the airport when Clemenza, sitting in the back seat, strangled him from behind.
Interestingly, in the closing scene of "The Godfather", Clemenza was the first one to address Michael as godfather and kiss his hand.
Actor Richard Castellano was supposed to return as Peter Clemenza in "The Godfather Part II", but he demanded a large salary increase, and that he be able to write Clemenza's lines himself. Director Francis Ford Coppola refused and had Clemenza killed off. Clemenza's character was replaced by the character of Frank Pentangeli.
