"Saving Private Ryan" is my favorite Tom Hanks movie, and I recommend it to anyone that has not already seen it. "Saving Private Ryan" also co-stars Vin Deisel, Edward Burns, Matt Damon, Barry Pepper and Giovanni Ribisi, among others.

Tom Hanks has co-starred with Meg Ryan in three romantic comedies, the most recent of which was the Nora Ephron directed "You've Got Mail", which hit theaters in 1998. The other two were "Joe Versus the Volcano" and "Sleepless in Seattle" (also directed by Ephron). Hanks wasn't in "When Harry Met Sally", which starred Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan.

"Forrest Gump" is one of Hanks' most critically laudered movies, and it follows the life of its title character as he travels through several decades of life while simultaneously being involved in multiple historical events. My favorite moment in the movie occurs when Forrest shakes President Kennedy's hand and blurts out, "I gotta pee!"

Answer: The Bonfire of the Vanities

"The Bonfire of the Vanities" is basically a story about American greed as it follows the unraveling of Sherman McCoy's life after his adulteress hits a black child with her car. I didn't really care for this movie too much, and it was initially met with critical scorn when it hit theaters back in 1990. If you are a fan of the movie, or are interested in learning more about it, pick up a copy of Julia Salamon's book "The Devil's Candy", which chronicles the making of the film.

"Turner and Hooch" was directed by Roger Spottiswoode and co-starred Craig T. Nelson. I don't know what else to say about this movie except that Hooch (real name Beasley the dog) was cute, but he sure did slobber a lot. Michael Sullivan is the name of the character that Tom portrays in "Road to Perdition", Rick Gasko is Tom's character in "Bachelor Party", and Allen Bauer is his character in "Splash".

"Toy Story" was a Disney/Pixar flick that spawned two sequels, one of which went direct to video. If you watch "Toy Story" closely, you will notice that when the characters blink, their eyes do not blink together, but one at a time.

Answer: Cast Away

"Cast Away" is a story of a FedEx employee (Hanks) who becomes stranded on an uncharted island after a FedEx plane crashes en route to a delivery destination. Despite the several references and logos used in the movie, FedEx did not pay the director, Robert Zemeckis, to use their logo. Talk about free advertising!

Answer: The Man with One Red Shoe

"The Man with One Red Shoe" is one of Hanks' very early movies, and it co-stars both Carrie Fisher and Dabney Coleman. Not one of Hanks' better known movies, but it is definitely worth checking out if you're interested in seeing how Hanks has evolved his craft over time. You might also want to check into the original French movie that this was based on.

It's called "Le Grand Blond Avec une Chaussure Noire".

Answer: Philadelphia

"Philadelphia" was probably Hanks' first foray into a purely dramatic role, and he won a Academy Award for it! Since then, Hanks hasn't turned back, considering that he usually stars in more dramatic roles rather than comedies since his success with "Philadelphia" (with a few exceptions like "You've Got Mail" and "Catch Me if You Can").

Answer: The 'burbs

"The 'Burbs", a 1989 film directed by Joe Dante, features Carrie Fisher as Tom Hanks' wife, Carol Peterson, and Corey Feldman as Hanks' next door neighbor Ricky Butler. The premise of the movie is based on Hanks' (along with Feldman and a few other neighbors) increasing suspicion concerning the behavior of the new family on the block.

Not Hanks' best film (in my opinion), but still a guilty pleasure of mine.

Answer: Apollo 13

"Apollo 13" is the true story of a doomed NASA mission to the moon, and it earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture in 1996. An interesting tidbit from the film is that the real Jim Lovell is actually left-handed, but a right-handed Tom Hanks refused to write with his left hand in the movie.

The inside of the MacMillan Toy Store (where the famous piano playing scene takes place) is actually the interior of New York City's FAO Schwartz's Toy Store. As any visitor to FAO can verify, the NYC store has been playing this scene on a near continuous loop since the movie was released on video in 1989. Everywhere you turn in the store, there seems to be a television set playing the Tom Hanks and Robert Loggia performance.

"The Money Pit" also co-starred Shelley Long of "Cheers" fame. "Money Pit" isn't the only "Cheers" cast member that Hanks has acted alongside "Toy Story 1 & 2" co-starred John Ratzenberger, Ted Danson appeared in "Saving Private Ryan", and Kelsey Grammar voiced a character in "Toy Story 2".

"A League of Their Own" is based on a true story of a professional women's baseball team that was formed during WWII, and it co-stars Madonna, Rosie O'Donnell, Geena Davis, and Jon Lovitz. Tom Hanks' character in the movie is based on a real life baseball player named Jimmie Foxx.

Answer: Catch Me If You Can

"Catch Me If You Can" is based on the true story of con artist Frank Abagnale Jr., who alluded the FBI for years. "The Sopranos'" star, James Gandolfini, was slated to play Carl Hanratty, but he had to withdraw from the role when Leonardo DiCaprio's re-shoots for "The Gangs of New York" pushed back the start of "Catch Me If You Can".
