Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why do William of Baskerville and his novice Adso of Melk come to the remote Benedictine monastery in northern Italy at the end of the year 1327?

Answer: To partake in a religious debate

The abbey is to be the location of a debate between papal delegates and Franciscans concerning poverty in the Church.
2. What is the first thing that William deduces after he and Adso have entered the abbey's battlements?

Answer: The location of the latrines

William is able to tell Adso where the latrines are after having seen a man rushing to the place and then soon after coming out of it looking relieved. William next deduces that one of the monks has recently died after observing a newly-made grave in the cemetery.
3. How did the young and beautiful manuscript illuminator Adelmo of Otranto die?

Answer: He committed suicide

Ashamed of having submitted to the 'unnatural caresses' of Berengar in exchange for information on the location of a copy of the second book of Aristotle's Poetics, Adelmo took his own life by jumping from a tower.
4. Which great Franciscan spiritual leader at the abbey warns William and Adso to leave because of the Devil's presence?

Answer: Ubertino da Casale

This is one of the historical portrayals in the movie.
5. What does the hunchback Salvatore's cry of 'Penitenziagite' suggest to William about him?

Answer: That he was once a heretic

Adso suspects that Salvatore may be responsible for the deaths in the abbey, but William doubts it even though he knows that Salvatore was once a Dolcinite.
6. Whom does Adso, quoting from the biblical Song of Songs, describe as a creature 'that rose like the dawn, was bewitching as the moon, radiant as the sun, terrible as an army poised for battle'?

Answer: A peasant girl

This line (Song of Songs 6:10) is spoken by the narrator (Adso as an old man) of the girl without a name of whom he had carnal knowledge.
7. Where did the erudite Greek translator Venantius die?

Answer: In the scriptorium

Venantius died of poisoning in the scriptorium and Berengar dragged his body to a vat of pigs' blood outside to divert suspicion.
8. Which of the following did William not detect on the piece of parchment he found on Venantius's desk?

Answer: A spot of black poison

The paint had been left by Adelmo, the code by Berengar for Adelmo, and the quotation from Aristotle (including 'Use vulgar people ... Take pleasure from their defects') by Venantius before he died. The poison was rather in a manuscript of the second book of Aristotle's Poetics.
9. Who was ultimately responsible for the deaths of Venantius, the moon-faced assistant librarian Berengar, and the librarian Malachia, as well as for the destruction of the abbey library, all because of his hatred of laughter?

Answer: Jorge de Burgos

The 'venerable' Jorge believed that laughter turned people away from God, and thus he poisoned the corners of a copy of the second book of Aristotle's Poetics (on comedy) to kill any who read it. He burned the book in the end to prevent William from having it, and in the process burned himself to death and burned down the library as well.
10. Whom does the abbot describe as 'well versed in the wiles of the Evil One'?

Answer: The Inquisitor Bernardo Gui

Bernardo Gui, having come to the abbey with the papal delegation, condemns Remigio, Salvatore, and the peasant girl to be burned at the stake for witchcraft and the murders in the abbey. Of the three, only the girl is saved (although in the book, even she dies).
