Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Macauley 'Mike' Connor, a tabloid reporter with an axe to grind where wealth and privilege are concerned:

Answer: James Stewart

Stewart won for his role in the classic 'The Philadelphia Story' in 1940. Incidentally, Stewart Granger's real name is James Stewart. He had to change it to avoid confusion.
2. August Schilling, an immigrant family man forced by circumstances to fake his death and hide from those he loves:

Answer: Emil Jannings

A German actor, Jannings holds the distinction of being not only the first Oscar winner as Best Actor, he also won it on the basis of two films, his role as Schilling in 'The Way Of All Flesh' and in 'The Last Command' in 1928. Sadly, there is no known copy of the original 'Flesh', but a remake with Tamiroff was made in 1940.
3. Father Chuck O'Malley, recently arrived at a parish to contend with both his new congregation and the pastor:

Answer: Bing Crosby

Harry Lillis 'Bing' Crosby won the 1944 Best Actor Award for 'Going My Way', opposite Frawley and Fitzgerald. Also in the film is former 'Our Gang' star Carl 'Alfalfa' Switzler.
4. Sergent J.J. Sefton, an Allied P.O.W. during World War II with a knack for wheeling and dealing:

Answer: William Holden

Holden won for his role in 'Stalag 17' in 1953.
5. Bill Gillespie, police chief of a sleepy southern town dealing with a murder, a visiting city detective and his own prejudice:

Answer: Rod Steiger

Steiger was truly an 'everyman's actor', whether it was in musicals like 'Oklahoma!' or his Oscar-winning role in 'In The Heat Of The Night' in 1967, opposite Sidney Poitier. O'Connor reprised the role of Gillespie for the TV series.
6. 'Fast' Eddie Felson, an ageing pool shark with a second chance for some big bucks through a protege:

Answer: Paul Newman

Newman reprised his role in 1961's 'The Hustler' to star opposite Tom Cruise for 'The Color Of Money' in 1986.
7. Lester Burnham, a suburban husband and father who has had enough of suburban life:

Answer: Kevin Spacey

Spacey won his second Oscar (his first was in 1995's 'The Usual Suspects') in 1999 for 'American Beauty', opposite Annette Bening, Thora Birch, Mena Suvari and Wes Bentley.
8. Luke Martin, a paralyzed Vietnam soldier who begins an affair with another soldier's wife:

Answer: Jon Voight

Voight, father of Oscar-winner Angelina Jolie, not only won for his role in 1978's 'Coming Home', but so did his co-star, Best Actress winner Jane Fonda.
9. Andy Purcell, an over-the-hill pugilist given to binge drinking, gambling and an over-affectionate son:

Answer: Wallace Beery

Beery's role in 'The Champ' with Jackie Cooper, had to share the Best Actor honors in 1931 with Fredrick March's role in 'Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde'. The only other lead actors who had to share the Oscar were Barbara Streisand ('Funny Girl') and Katherine Hepburn ('The Lion In Winter') in 1968.
10. Lt. Col. Frank Slade, a retired Army officer who has as much trouble getting along with anyone as he does seeing:

Answer: Al Pacino

Ho Haa! It took a remake of a 1974 Italian import ('Profumo do donna') to garner Pacino his first Oscar for 1992's 'Scent Of A Woman'.
11. Alonzo Harris, a rogue detective who works the streets of Los Angeles with questionable methods:

Answer: Denzel Washington

Washington, who won a Best Supporting Oscar with 'Glory' in 1989, became only the second black actor to win for a leading role (the first was Sidney Poitier) in 2001's 'Training Day'.
12. Manuel, a Portugese deck hand on a fishing boat whose latest catch included a spoiled child:

Answer: Spencer Tracy

This role in 1937's 'Captains Courageous' was the first of Spencer Tracy's two consecutive Best Actor Oscars (he won again a year later in 'Boys Town'). Only Tom Hanks ever duplicated that feat to date.
13. Luis Molina, a homosexual prisoner who escapes reality by imagining his own romantic films:

Answer: William Hurt

William Hurt won for 1985's 'Kiss Of The Spider Woman', opposite Raul Julia and Sonia Braga.
14. Elliot Garfield, a struggling actor stuck with having to share an apartment with two other people with issues about actors:

Answer: Richard Dreyfuss

Dreyfuss, who began his career with uncredited roles in such films as 'Valley Of The Dolls' and 'The Graduate', won Best Actor for 'The Goodbye Girl' in 1977, opposite 'roomates' Marsha Mason and Quinn Cummings.
15. Howard Beale, a recently fired news anchor whose on-air antics give new life to his career:

Answer: Peter Finch

Finch, whose on-air speech culminated with the memorable, 'I'm as mad as hell and I'm not going to take this anymore', won for his role in 'Network' in 1976. Sadly, Finch died January 14, 1977 before the award show and the Oscar was given posthumously.
