This quote is a direct reference to the movie "Alien" in which one of the main characters has an alien burst out of his chest. It occurs during Prot's first meeting with Dr Mark Powell. Prot has just been brought in to the psychiatric hospital after being found alone in a train station with no luggage or ticket.

When asked by Dr Mark Powell, during their initial meeting, why he looks like a human, Prot replies: "Because it is the most energy efficient configuration. Similarly, on your planet I look like you; on K-PAX I look like a K-Paxian."

This is what Prot says in Dr Powell's office before devouring a banana, including the skin! Dr Powell is attempting to figure out exactly what is going on in Prot's head as he clearly believes he is an alien from the planet K-PAX.

When introduced to four doctors at the Observatory, Prot shakes each of their hands, nods his head and says, "Doctor." Prot is confused as to how many different people can all be referred to by the same title.

Prot informs Dr Mark Powell that he, and all K-PAXians, are capable of travelling on a mere beam of light. When later asked to prove that he can travel on light, Prot stands still and says "Adios! Aloha!" Either he stood there and pretended to have moved, or Prot truly did move at the speed of light which would not be seen by the naked eye!

After Dr Powell invites Prot over to celebrate the 4th of July, Prot kneels on the grass to greet the family dog, Shasta. Apparently Shasta has never liked anyone who has visited previously, but she wags her tail and plays happily with Prot. Prot has always had a specific date in mind for when he would return to K-PAX. He tells Dr Powell that nobody from K-PAX misses him while he gone but during his stay on Earth he has made many friends and will finally know what it is like to be missed.

After many hypnosis sessions with Prot, Dr Powell uncovers the story of Robert Porter. Robert Porter was a man who went missing from his home in New Mexico, after he killed a man who had raped and shot his wife and child. Powell discovers that he and Prot are the same person.

Prot's last words to Mark, heard as a voice over, as Mark greets his estranged son in the airport, are that the universe expands and collapses in on itself forever and everything that happens now will happen over and over again.

Robert Porter is left in a catatonic state at the end of the film. There are two possible endings to the film and the viewer is left to decide which they believe. It is possible that Prot took over Robert Porter's body after the horrific events in his past to protect him and find someone to care for him before leaving to go back home to K-PAX. Likewise Robert Porter may have been driven insane by what happened and subconsciously made up a story to protect himself from the pain.
