Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Millie is a woman who is determined to fully embrace the times and goes to such lengths as cutting her hair, changing her wardrobe and even her behaviour at times in order to be 'Thoroughly Modern'. Who plays Millie?

Answer: Julie Andrews

Made a Dame in 2000, Julie Andrews embarked upon a film career with her movie debut in 1964. Before this she was a successful stage actor. Her performance in "Thoroughly Modern Millie" earned her a third Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress, but she lost to Anne Bancroft in "The Graduate".
Several of her films are musicals and showcase her singing talents. Another of my favourite films which she stars in is 'Victor/Victoria' which I recommend watching, again for its humour and music.
2. Millie and her new friend Miss Dorothy meet at an all female boarding house where they both reside. What is the name of it?

Answer: Priscilla Hotel

The hotel is run by a woman who is not all she appears to be... although seemingly concerned for the welfare of the girls in her hotel, especially the ones who have no family, this is not the case. Her increasingly desperate actions form a lot of the humour throughout the film.
3. Is Miss Dorothy an orphan?

Answer: Yes

Although Miss Dorothy does indeed claim to be an orphan it transpires throughout the film that she actually has both a brother and stepmother whom she is very close to. However her parents are dead.
4. There is a particular machine which routinely fails to function throughout the film and usually requires additional effort on the part of the character trying to use it. What is it and how is it activated?

Answer: Elevator/Lift - Dancing

Built into the musical theme of the film the lift refuses to work unless someone is dancing away in it. Personally I would have taken the stairs!
5. At the Friendship Dance near the beginning of the film Millie has an accessory which doesn't always stay in place. What is it?

Answer: Beauty Spot

Although the beauty spot manages to stay in place for the dance, a wild drive through the streets and a cuddle with the male lead leaves the spot on his face rather than hers until she retrieves it.
6. Millie is driven in her job by a particular ambition. What is it that she wants to achieve?

Answer: To marry her boss

Maybe it is because I don't know a lot about the twenties but I was never sure why it was Millie's desire to marry her boss. It did set up some amusing scenes though such as when singing 'Baby Face' and the added friction in her relationship with Miss Dorothy. A personal highlight is her boss being hit by a tranquiliser dart and nobody noticing the difference.
7. The male lead played by James Fox dresses as a woman to help uncover the mystery disappearances at the boarding house. What is his character's name?

Answer: Jimmy

Although Jimmy pretends to be an unambitious paperclip salesman he is actually a millionaire who has gone out into the world to find someone who can love him for who he is rather than what he is worth. Guess who that turns out to be?
8. Now to the music, remember I said it was a musical? Millie sings at a wedding in one scene. What religious denomination is it?

Answer: Jewish

Millie sings "Jewish Wedding Song (Trinkt le Chaim)" at the wedding reception. She brings Miss Dorothy along for the occasion.
9. Along the course of the film Millie meets several eccentric people but probably the most extreme of these is a woman who sings, flies a plane, dances and even gets shot out of a cannon. What relation is she to Miss Dorothy?

Answer: Stepmother

Her name is Muzzy Van Hossmere played by Carol Channing, she is rich from marrying Miss Dorothy and Jimmy's father but knows how important it is to marry for love. She pretends that Jimmy is the son of her gardener in the hope that Millie will love him regardless of his fortune.
10. Although the film is overall a comedy the subplot is anything but... what is the primary activity of Mrs Meers with regards to the girls at the hotel?

Answer: Human Trafficking

Although the trafficking is treated humorously throughout the film such as the repeated unsuccessful efforts by Mrs Meers to subdue Miss Dorothy, the end scenes clash a little by showing a fairly scary situation of women locked in cages waiting to be moved out.
