Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In this movie you are Kevin Flynn, arcade owner and former employee of ENCOM. In trying to prove that your games were stolen, you break into your former place of work, only to get broken down into a digital data stream and loaded into ENCOM's mainframe, where you have to team up with a security program to defeat the evil Master Control program. What is the name of this movie?

Answer: TRON

Jeff Bridges played the part of Kevin Flynn in the movie. 'TRON', released in 1982, was one of the first movies to employ computer graphics in a major way and the movie was considered to be visually spectacular at the time of its release.
2. Becoming Dr. Lawrence Angelo, a scientist working for Virtual Space Industries, you persuade an intellectually challenged young man to take part in experiments. The experiments use a combination of drugs and virtual reality programming to make him more intelligent. At first it appears to work, however outside interference causes this young man to turn violent and he is soon out of control. What is the title of this movie?

Answer: The Lawnmower Man

The movie was originally titled 'Stephen King's The Lawnmower Man' although the original script had nothing to do with King's short story and was in fact titled 'Cyber God'.
New Line Cinema held the film rights to that short story and decided to combine some elements of it with 'Cyber God' to create the film. Stephen King successfully sued to have his name removed as the film bore little relation to the story.
3. Leaping into the future, you take on the title role of the next movie, playing a data courier who has to deliver a package of data within 24 hours... or die! Who are you pretending to be now?

Answer: Johnny Mnemonic

'Johnny Mnemonic', played by Keanu Reeves, is a data courier who has an implant which allows him to pass data between parties. On the day the film takes place, he exceeds the data limit (which could kill him if not removed in time) in order to deliver a package that is more important than even he knows.
The role was originally to be played by Val Kilmer, however he took the role of Batman in 'Batman Forever' instead.
4. It's 1999 and you are Lenny Nero, a former LAPD detective turned street dealer in 'SQUID' recordings: experiences that are recorded from the brain which, when played back, create a virtual experience for the user. Los Angeles is a city on the edge and when you receive a series of discs which record murders, you have to race to uncover the truth of what is happening in LA before the city plunges into violence and civil war. What kind of 'Days' are you having?

Answer: Strange Days

Ralph Fiennes played Lenny Nero in 'Strange Days', which was initially released in only one cinema before its popularity warranted a wider release; it went on to make $7.9 million in North America.
James Cameron, director of 'Titanic', did not receive credit for his editing work on this movie as he was not a member of the union at the time it was made.
5. Time to take on the role of Thomas A. Anderson, computer programmer and hacker. It is man versus machine in this tale about the world around you and the very nature of reality as you know it. Which virtual world have you stepped into?

Answer: The Matrix

Keanu Reaves played the part of Thomas A. Anderson, also known as Neo. Three other actors, Ewan McGregor, Will Smith and Nicolas Cage, were offered this part and turned it down. 'The Matrix' is part of a trilogy of movies, which featured ground breaking special effects while examining the nature of reality.
6. Your marketing training didn't prepare you to become a bodyguard to Allegra Geller, a leading game designer who is testing her new virtual reality game. Next thing you know, you, Ted Pikul, are being persuaded to have a game port inserted into your body! What is the name of the game you are going to play, which is also the title of the movie?

Answer: eXistenZ

Jude Law plays the role of Ted Pikul in the 1999 movie 'eXistenZ', co-starring with Jennifer Jason Leigh who plays the part of Allegra Geller.
Written and directed by David Cronenberg, the film examines reality and the notion of wilful self deception as it becomes harder for the characters to determine what is real, what is part of the game and whether their actions are their own or those of the video game character.
7. Assuming the role of Douglas Hall you are horrified to find that you are accused of murdering your mentor, Hannon Fuller, creator of a virtual reality modelled on Los Angeles in 1937. As you begin to doubt your own innocence, you attempt to track down a message left by your mentor within the virtual world, in which movie?

Answer: The Thirteenth Floor

Craig Bierko plays Douglas Hall in 'The Thirteenth Floor', which was inspired by the book 'Simulacron-3' by Daniel F. Galouye, one of the earliest books to feature virtual reality. The movie explores the concept of worlds within worlds and characters in virtual realities.
8. Take on the role of Justine as a frustrated teenager bothered by your lack of experience with boys. Attending a science fair with your friend, you make use of a virtual reality to create your perfect man... with some unforeseen consequences! Which movie are you starring in?

Answer: Virtual Sexuality

'Virtual Sexuality' is based on the novel 'Virtual Sexual Reality' by Chloe Rayban and presents a twist on the teen sex comedy, pushing the female into the role of the protagonist. Unlike many other movies dealing with virtual reality, this movie takes a light-hearted approach and avoids more common existential themes.
9. Rich, attractive, successful. Being David Aames is good. Or is it? A car accident, a jail cell, a prosthetic mask and a deserted Times Square. What virtual reality have you stepped into?

Answer: Vanilla Sky

David Aames is played by Tom Cruise. 'Vanilla Sky', directed by Cameron Crowe, is a remake on a Spanish movie 'Abre los ojos' (Open Your Eyes). The title refers to a painting by Claude Monet 'Seine at Argenteuil' and the depiction of the sky in it. It received mixed reviews, but the soundtrack to the movie, which featured artists such as U2, R.E.M., Jeff Buckley, Radiohead and The Chemical Brothers, was a critical success.
10. Family is important to you as you play Juni Cortez on a mission to save your sister Carmen who is trapped in a virtual reality game. What is the name of this movie?

Answer: Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over

Juni Cortez is played by Daryl Sabara in the third instalment of 'Spy Kids', in which he enters a virtual world to defeat the Toymaker whose world has trapped his sister Carmen. The movie is presented in 3D which some critics felt was a gimmick to cover up weak elements in the story.

Although the critics preferred the two previous movies, 'Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over' was the highest grossing movie of the three.
