Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which actor, who once escaped from New York, stars in the 1980 comedy "Used Cars"?

Answer: Kurt Russell

In "Used Cars", Kurt Russell plays Rudy Russo, a somewhat devious salesman whose goal is to eventually be elected to the state senate. In exchange for a $10,000 contribution to his political campaign from the dealership's owner, Luke Fuchs, Rudy agrees to help keep the business going, and out of the hands of Luke's more successful brother. Kurt Russell's acting career began when he was still a child, with his first 'big' role at the age of 12, starring as Jaimie on the television series "The Travels of Jaimie McPheeters".

He went on to make numerous television appearances as well as movies, and was considered one of Disney's biggest stars in the 1970s. In addition to the other films he has appeared in, he starred as Snake Plissken in 1981's "Escape From New York", and then again in 1996's "Escape From L.A.".
2. Rudy Russo works for Luke Fuchs, who owns a used car dealership that might have pleased FDR. What is his dealership called?

Answer: New Deal

Luke's New Deal dealership is located across the street from his brother Roy's dealership - which is named The Auto Emporium. Roy wants to take over his brother's business, and profit from a planned freeway ramp construction.
President Roosevelt's New Deal was a governmental response to the Great Depression. A number of economic programs were established to help America recover, including 1933's creation of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, the Tennessee Valley Authority and the Agricultural Adjustment Act.
3. While he is not one of 12 angry men in this comedy, who plays the dual roles of Roy and Luke Fuchs?

Answer: Jack Warden

Jack Warden was offered the role of Roy Fuchs, but turned it down, until he was offered the opportunity to play both Roy and Luke Fuchs. While the brothers are nearly identical, their personalities are complete opposites, as is shown by their actions and interactions, and Warden portrays them accordingly. Beginning in 1950, Jack Warden (1920 - 2006) acted in numerous movies and television programs.

His portrayal of a juror in 1957's "12 Angry Men" brought him public and critical notice. In a career that spanned six decades, he was nominated for several awards, and won an Emmy for his portrayal of George Halas in 1971's "Brian's Song".
4. Rudy Russo may not elect to be a car salesman forever. In fact, he has a plan to work in which field?

Answer: politics

Rudy plans to run for a seat in the State Senate, but it is a costly endeavor and despite his 'make a deal' attitude, he is struggling to find a way to make his plan work. When Luke Fuchs offers to invest in Rudy's campaign in exchange for Rudy's promise to keep the dealership going, Rudy jumps at the deal.

As his character evolves, and later in the movie as his relationship with Luke's daughter deepens, Rudy's self-centered attitude changes into something more considerate, mature and less selfish.
5. Luke Fuchs is taken on a terrifying, and ultimately fatal, test ride by his brother's mechanic.

Answer: True

Despite being more successful than his brother, Roy Fuchs is determined to gain possession of Luke's dealership - and Luke's life insurance payout. Knowing that his brother has been suffering heart problems, Roy has his mechanic take Luke for a phony test drive.

The mechanic, Mickey, is a former demolition-derby driver, and takes Luke for a ride that is too much for him, resulting in Luke's death from a heart attack.
6. Trying to keep Luke's death a secret, Rudy and his co-workers bury Luke behind his dealership. In fact, in a move Henry Ford would disapprove of, they bury him in a car. But, which one?

Answer: Edsel

Realizing Roy has caused Luke's death, Rudy is determined to prevent Roy from getting control of the dealership and Luke's finances. To buy time, he uses the Edsel that used to be part of New Deal's business sign to bury Luke in an old service pit behind the building. With both Luke and the Edsel gone, and Rudy's explanation that Luke has driven to Miami in the Edsel, Roy is thwarted, at least temporarily.

Despite his certainty that his brother is dead, Roy cannot prove it, and his lawyer assures Roy that there is nothing that can be done. Edsel Ford was Henry Ford's son, and he served as the president of the Ford Motor Company from 1919 - 1943. Edsels were produced from 1958 - 1960, and named after Edsel Ford.

They were not successful in the American market, and are considered an epic failure in the automobile industry.
7. In an electrifying scene, Luke's car - with Luke inside - is sent crashing into what?

Answer: power transformer

After Roy discovers his brother's car buried in the old service pit, he leaves, and returns with the police the next day. But, before his return, Rudy and the others dig up the Edsel, and hide it away. When Roy and the police confront him, Rudy explains that Luke has returned from Miami, but has gone out to breakfast.

In the meantime, the car has been doused with gasoline, and rigged to accelerate without a driver, but with Luke's body still inside. As Roy argues with Rudy, the Edsel roars away, heading for the power transformer and a fiery explosion.
8. While the movie is set in Arizona rather than Georgia, Rudy and his co-workers manage to broadcast a commercial during which president's State of the Union Address?

Answer: Jimmy Carter

In an escalating series of moves and counter-moves, Rudy and his co-workers try to outdo Roy's attempts at cornering the market. Following the illegal broadcast of a commercial by Rudy and his friends during a football game, Roy adds a circus to his car lot, which Rudy counters by featuring strippers at Luke's dealership. Ratcheting up the stakes, Rudy plans a commercial to run during President Carter's State of the Union Address.

While he is busy distracting Luke's daughter, his co-workers pull off the commercial stunt - and in the process, destroy several of Roy's cars. President Jimmy Carter was the 39th President of the United States, and served one term, from 1977 - 1981.

Born in Plains, Georgia in 1924, he also served in the Georgia Senate, and spent one term as Governor of Georgia.
9. Luke's daughter, Barbara, has to prove to a judge that the dealership she has inherited from her father has a full mile's worth of used cars for sale. Don't bat an eye before you guess, but who plays the judge?

Answer: Al Lewis

Thanks to Roy's devious machinations, Barbara's commercial for her father's dealership is tampered with, changing her words 'style of cars' to 'mile of cars'. The dealership does not even come close to having that many cars for sale - which Roy promptly reports to the authorities.

In danger of being found guilty of blatant false advertising, Barbara is lost for a solution - until Rudy concocts a way to get her off the hook. Al Lewis is perhaps best remembered for his role in the television series "The Munsters", which ran from 1964 - 1966.

In his role as Grandpa, whose name was Sam Dracula, he had the ability to turn himself into a bat.
10. Before he went back to the future, which director earned his first R rating with "Used Cars"?

Answer: Robert Zemeckis

Robert Zemeckis not only directed "Used Cars", he also co-wrote the script with Bob Gale. The men have worked together on several films, including 1985's "Back to the Future", and both of the sequels. Zemeckis has directed a number of successful films, including 1994's "Forrest Gump" 2000's "Cast Away" and 2004's "The Polar Express".
"Used Cars" was produced by Bob Gale, and executive produced by Steven Spielberg and John Milius.
