Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which character fills the part of Paris ("Romeo and Juliet") in "West Side Story"?

Answer: Chino

In "Romeo and Juliet", Romeo kills Paris, but in "West Side Story" Chino kills Tony.
2. Tony from "West Side Story" fills the part of which character in "Romeo and Juliet"?

Answer: Romeo

Tony and Romeo are both the lead male lovers in these stories. Tony and Riff started the Jets.
3. What are the names of the two rival gangs in "West Side Story"?

Answer: The Sharks and the Jets

The Sharks are the Puerto Ricans, the Jets are the Americans.
4. Which character in "West Side Story" fills the part of Mercutio from "Romeo and Juliet"?

Answer: Riff

Mercutio is killed by Tybalt, and Riff is killed by Bernardo.
5. What weapon is used to kill Riff and Bernardo, and how many of those weapons are used in the fight?

Answer: switchblades, 3

During the fight, Riff loses his knife, and Bernardo picks it up and uses two. One of the Jets hands Riff a switchblade he brought hidden in his pocket.
6. What was the name of the tomboy who wanted to join the Jets in "West Side Story"?

Answer: Anybodys

She got Tony to leave after the rumble.
7. Is there an alter ego of the tomboy in "Romeo and Juliet"?

Answer: No

She is not in "Romeo and Juliet". In "West Side Story", Baby John teases her and she tackles him saying that she took him twice before and she'll do it again.
8. Who in "Romeo and Juliet" fills the part of Anita ("West Side Story")?

Answer: The Nurse or Friar John

She could arguably be Friar John, too, because they both fail to deliver the correct message to Tony or Romeo, but the Nurse is assaulted when she goes to town and Anita is assaulted by the Jets when she goes to Doc's candy store.
9. What is the name of the friar ("Romeo and Juliet") who marries Romeo and Juliet?

Answer: Friar Lawrence

They get married in Friar Lawrence's cell. It was early in the morning, the day after the party.
10. Who marries Tony and Maria ("West Side Story")?

Answer: Nobody. They never really get legally married.

Tony can't legally marry them, and Officer Krupke and Lt. Schrank hate the PR's. The detective bullies them and tells them to leave the candy store, saying "You may think this is a free country, but I've got a badge! What do you have?" They walk out whistling the national anthem. There is no character named Pastor Barry.
11. Who fills the part of Friar Lawrence ("Romeo and Juliet") in "West Side Story"?

Answer: The owner of the candy store/pharmacy where Tony works

Friar Lawrence is a friend of Romeo's and he marries Romeo and Juliet, hoping that it will reconcile their families' houses.
Doc, the owner of the shop, is a father-figure who often gives Tony advice about bettering his life.
12. Who is NOT one of the Capulets or does NOT work under the Capulets, (servant, maid, etc.)?

Answer: David

Gregory, Sampson, and Peter are servants in the house of Capulet, and get in a fight with the Montagues at the very beginning of the story.
13. Who was NOT one of the Jets?

Answer: Daddio

We hear these names after they have the rumble and after they sing the "Cool" song. The Jet who did the most of the singing kind of takes charge, since Riff isn't around anymore, and he tells each of the Jets where to go to look for Tony.
14. Six people die in "Romeo and Juliet". How many people die in "West Side Story"?

Answer: 3

Mercutio, Romeo, Juliet, Paris, Tybalt, and Romeo's mother all died.
15. The major difference in the endings of the two movies involves which character? There are two different possibilities, but one is distinctly more important than the other.

Answer: Maria/Juliet

In "Romeo and Juliet" when Juliet finds Romeo dead, she kills herself. In "West Side Story", Maria freaks out, but doesn't kill herself. The unimportant difference is that Romeo kills himself when he thinks Juliet is dead, whereas Tony wanders the streets yelling for Chino to kill him too. Chino has a gun and has been looking for Tony to avenge his best friend Bernardo's death.

He hears Tony and comes and shoots him just as Tony sees Maria and finds out that she is not really dead. So at the moment of death, Tony does not want to die. But, just the same, he committed suicide as surely as Romeo did, so this does not impact the ending all that much.

It is more important that Maria did not die than how Tony died.
