Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Pfeiffer's character, Claire Spencer, has a daughter named Caitlin. When the movie opens, Caitlin is about to go off to college. During the first scene, Claire wakes her daughter up and offers to make her something for breakfast. What?

Answer: waffles

This happens right after the movie opens with Claire in the bath tub. After her bath, Claire wakes Caitlin up and tells her to get moving because they "don't want to be late" (since they're dropping Caitlin off at school). Claire offers to make her some waffles, perhaps as an incentive to wake up faster. Caitlin grunts but then yells out "blueberries!" as Claire is walking down the hall, presumably towards the kitchen.
2. When the Spencers drop Caitlin off at school, they meet her new roommate, Beatrice. Norman asks Beatrice to take care of Caitlin. What does Beatrice reply?

Answer: "I won't go to a single bar without her."

Beatrice shakes Norman's hand while Claire is still trying to say goodbye to her daughter. Norman also tells Caitlin to "come home often" and to "call your mom". This takes place in Caitlin's dorm room, right before Claire and Norman leave, and Claire starts crying ("Well, I almost made it...").
3. What is Norman Spencer's job?

Answer: geneticist

We see him at work, and talking about work, throughout the entire movie. More pointedly, we see Claire and Norman in bed after dropping off Claire's daughter at school. Norman is typing away on his computer, and Claire reads the title of the book he has been reading: "Genetic Repair Mechanisms in Eukaryotic Organisms". Claire then praises him for being so brilliant, comparing him to Madame Curie and Jonas Salk.
4. Claire Spencer once made it to Carnegie Hall.

Answer: True

Claire's first husband (Caitlin's father) was a musician named Michael. He and Claire used to play together, and once made it to Carnegie Hall. Claire played the cello, something she takes up again later in the movie. It is also implied that Claire attended Juilliard; we see her leafing through a photo album, and there's a picture where she's holding an infant Caitlin and wearing a black tank top with a musical note that reads "Juilliard".

This happens right before Claire runs out to the garden and hears Mary Feur (the neighbor) crying through the fence.
5. What is Mary Feur actually afraid of?

Answer: her husband will leave her

When she speaks to Claire through the fence, Mary says she's afraid she "will just disappear". This leads Claire to believe that Mr. Feur wants his wife dead. In reality, Mary just meant she was afraid that her husband would leave and she would be emotionally destroyed.
6. When Claire first visits Norman in his lab, what are the research assistants using to sedate the mice?

Answer: halothane

Claire visits Norman for the first time right after the scene where her home stereo turns on by itself. We see Norman's lab assistants sedating a white mouse using a cotton ball soaked in halothane. One of the male assistants explains halothane is a "dissociative agent" because it "paralyzes motor functions" but leaves the mouse conscious.

Moreover, it can be used "on all mammals". This is note-worthy information for the viewer, since Norman will use halothane on Claire later in the movie.
7. Where did Claire and Norman live before moving to Vermont?

Answer: Boston

We find this out when Claire and Norman go out to dinner with Norman's co-worker, who shows up with his new date (who turns out to be, coincidentally, Claire's old music partner). Claire tells the story of how they inherited Norman's father's house in Vermont, and she mentions they lived in Boston before moving there. Soon thereafter, Norman announces the place is haunted, much to Claire's dismay.
8. Claire and her friend Jody use a ouija board to speak with the "bathroom ghost", whom Claire still thinks is Mary Feur's spirit. What choice-phrase does Claire use that cracks Jody up?

Answer: "We wish to commune with the spirit..."

Jody laughs when Claire uses the word "commune", which Claire then changes to "communicate", Alas, they fail to commune OR communicate, since Cooper (the dog) interrupts their seance. The ouija board indicator does flicker back and forth, however, indicating that the ghost haunting the house did try to communicate with Claire and Jody.
9. When Claire visits the psychologist for the second time, what does she claim is bothering her?

Answer: empty nest syndrome

Claire returns to the psychologist's office after seeing Madison Elizabeth Frank's ghost in her bathtub (after the seance with Jody). She explains what happened to the psychologist, claiming she has been experiencing something like empty nest syndrome, which has made her somewhat delusional.

At this point in the movie, Claire is still being convinced by Norman that the ghost isn't real. Seeing Mary Feur, alive and well at the university with Mr. Feur, also leads Claire to believe whatever she saw in the bathroom was a figment of her imagination.
10. Who killed Madison Elizabeth Frank?

Answer: Norman

After Claire dives into the lake to retrieve Madison's wooden box and silver necklace, Norman confesses to her that he was having an affair with Madison. The shock of discovering them together was what led to Claire having her car accident and losing her short-term memory (which is not shown in the movie, but talked about frequently). Norman lies to Claire, claiming Madison came to their house to kill herself.

In fact, Norman killed Madison to keep her from revealing the truth to his superiors at the university, and then dumped her body in the lake.
