Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. John Rawlins asked me at the Battle of Antietam if I was alright. Who played me?

Answer: Matthew Broderick

Broderick, a native of New York City, was cast as Robert Gould Shaw. Robert served in the Union Army and was first seen in the movie fighting with his fellow soldiers at the Battle of Antietam. After the battle ended amidst much gun fighting and dead bodies, he was seen lying down on the ground.

When he looked up, John Rawlins was there and he asked Robert if he was okay but Robert did not respond. After the battle, Robert received medical treatment for some of his injuries and the guy treating him said he heard President Lincoln would issue an order freeing the slaves.

In one scene, Robert announced to his regiment that President Lincoln sent a message on how the African American soldiers in the regiment would receive less pay than the White soldiers. Robert and the others all agreed it would be best to rip up the paychecks they got that day and not support that type of discrimination. Robert was seen fighting in many battles throughout the movie. Broderick starred in the films "The Producers" (2005), "1918" and "Ladyhawke".
2. I told Robert that I was working for his father in the Freedmen's Relief Association. Who played me?

Answer: Andre Braugher

Braugher played Thomas Searles in "Glory". Thomas was seen at a party early on in the movie where many people were gathered. Thomas said hello to Robert and how glad he was when he heard that Robert had been promoted. Robert stated it was obvious he would get the promotion as nearly everyone else had died in a previous battle. Thomas then asked him about how Cabot Forbes was doing, to which Robert said he was "impossible, as always". Robert asked Thomas how he was doing so Thomas let him know he was working with his father by helping him with a resettlement for the Freedmen's Relief Association.

While Thomas spoke with Robert, Robert was pouring himself a drink and he dropped a spoon so Thomas asked him if he was alright. Robert stated to Thomas that he was fine. Braugher was seen in the movies "Salt", "City of Angels" and "Primal Fear".
3. I spoke about how General Hunter rounded up slaves and put them in camps as if they were like cattle. Who played me?

Answer: Peter Michael Goetz

Goetz, a native of Buffalo, New York, portrayed Francis George Shaw in a small role. Francis was Robert's father and he was at the party early on in the film and a woman informed Robert that someone would like to speak with him. Robert went to the room where his father was and heard him talking about how someone named General Hunter had gathered slaves as if they were contraband and put them in camps like cattle. Francis also commented that the War Department decided to give these slaves pikes instead of guns. Francis stated that the slaves' response to that decision by the War Department was to desert the camps and he said he could not blame the slaves.

When Francis saw his son, he introduced him to the Governor who was standing right next to him. Goetz guest starred on the TV series "Without a Trace", "Gilmore Girls" and "Home Improvement".
4. I told Robert that my people would be granted pride and dignity if allowed to form a war regiment. Who played me?

Answer: Raymond St. Jacques

St. Jacques landed the role of Frederick Douglass. Frederick was at the party early in the film and was introduced to Robert by the Governor. When discussion came up about possibly forming an all African American regiment, Frederick stated that allowing his people to form the regiment would "offer pride and dignity to those who only knew degradation". Robert told Frederick that he thought the idea would be wonderful. Frederick listened on when the Governor told Robert that he would like to be the Colonel who would lead the regiment.

When Robert excused himself from the room, Frederick simply looked on in silence. St. Jacques had guest starring appearances on the TV shows "MacGyver", "A Different World" and "The Love Boat".
5. At a party, I asked Robert if he had too much punch. Who played me?

Answer: Cary Elwes

Elwes, born in 1962 in London, England, was cast as Cabot Forbes. At the party seen near the beginning, Cabot was seen going outside to speak to Robert alone and he asked him if he had too much punch and was not feeling well. Robert simply laughed at what he said, and the two of them began to talk about the proposed all African American regiment. Cabot stated how he knew Robert always wanted to be a Colonel but wondered why a Colonel of an all African American regiment. Cabot sarcastically stated Robert being Colonel of such a regiment could make him popular as he would be handing out guns to a bunch of African Americans. Cabot noticed Robert looking sad so he asked him what the matter was. Robert simply looked at him and said he would accept the offer to be the Colonel for the all African American regiment and he wanted Cabot to join him in leading the regiment. Cabot accepted Robert's offer to help him with the regiment. Elwes portrayed characters in the films "Saw", "Liar Liar" and "Robin Hood: Men in Tights".

Jupiter wanted to fight in the Union's all African American regiment so he went to the first day of training and spoke with Thomas Searles. Thomas told Jupiter it was a collection of essays by writers like Fourier, Emerson and others, mainly transcendentalists. Jupiter asked Thomas if the book had pictures and Thomas stated it did not. Jupiter told Thomas that he really wanted to learn how to read so he asked Thomas if he could teach him. Thomas stated he would be happy to teach him reading skills. Answer: Denzel Washington

Washington, a native of Mt. Vernon, New York, portrayed Private Trip. Private Trip was a member of the all African American regiment and was first seen sitting in a tent. When Thomas entered the tent and sat down in a space, Private Trip asked him to get out of the space since it was his, but Thomas stated he liked that space since it provided him some light to use to read. Private Trip smiled and stated how much he liked it when African Americans talked just as good as White people. Thomas told Private Trip he would not mind teaching him how to read but Private Trip said he was disinterested in learning anything from him. Thomas mentioned to Private Trip that he and his father were free Black men but Private Trip got annoyed so he told Thomas to move or he would beat him up. Thomas then agreed to simply not put up a fight and move to another space.

In another scene, Private Trip was seen being whipped when he was accused of deserting the Army. Washington portrayed characters in the films "Cry Freedom", "The Mighty Quinn" and "A Soldier's Story".

At one point, he asked Private Trip where he was from so Private Trip responded that he was from around Tennessee. When Private Trip said he ran away at a young age and that he ran for President, John let out a quiet laugh.

When Private Trip claimed he did not win the Presidency, John laughed yet again and Private Trip laughed with him. Of all the African Americans in the regiment, John was the only one to be promoted to Sergeant Major. Freeman was seen in the movies "Who Says I Can't Ride a Rainbow!", "Harry and Son" and "Lean on Me".

In one scene, he and several men looted a nearby town so Robert asked him what he was doing and he responded that he was liberating the town in the name of the Republic. Colonel Montgomery then went ahead with plans to burn the town, which was said to be a town called Darien in Georgia, and he asked Robert to prepare the men to get their torches ready. Robert retorted to James that he would do no such thing. Colonel Montgomery reminded Robert that it was an order but Robert stated it was an immoral order. De Young had guest starring appearances on the TV series "Grey's Anatomy", "Touched by an Angel" and "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation".
10. Robert approached me one day and told me that perhaps I was being too hard on the men. Who played me?

Answer: John Finn

Finn, a native of New York City, portrayed Sergeant Mulcahy in "Glory". Sergeant Mulcahy undertook the effort to train the soldiers in the all African American regiment and he had a reputation for being a very tough, aggressive trainer. Robert observed him training the soldiers and decided to have a private talk with Sergeant Mulcahy in one scene.

He told Sergeant Mulcahy that he believed him to be a fair man but he also wondered if he thought he was being too hard on the soldiers. Sergeant Mulcahy felt he was training them just fine so Robert decided not to argue with him about it.

In another scene, Sergeant Mulcahy saw Thomas Searles and he asked him to try to stab him. When Searles came at Mulcahy in a weak manner, Mulcahy demanded he try it again and with much more force. Searles used more force on his second try but Mulcahy simply knocked him to the ground. Finn guest starred on the TV shows "Dawson's Creek", "Without a Trace" and "NYPD Blue".
