Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I recounted my days as a prison guard. Who played me?

Answer: Dabbs Greer

Greer, born on April 2nd, 1917 in Fairview, Missouri, was cast as an older Paul Edgecomb. Paul resided at a nursing home and spoke to his friend, Elaine, one day about his days working as a prison guard. He mentioned to her his assignment of overseeing the executions of death row prisoners and the walk they took to the electric chair as being called "the green mile". Paul mentioned the name as being symbolic of the lime green color on the floor. Paul spoke to Elaine of one prisoner in particular named John Coffey and how his execution was the last he saw before he quit being a prison guard. Paul was later seen in the movie attending Elaine's funeral. Greer starred in the films, "Con Air", "Little Giants" and "Pacific Heights".
2. I told John that I dreamed of him. Who played me?

Answer: Patricia Clarkson

Clarkson, a native of New Orleans, Louisiana, played Melinda Moores. Melinda was Warden Hal Moores' wife and became very ill late in the movie. One night, Paul and a couple of other prison guards took John outside the prison walls so he could go to the warden's home and help his wife.

The guards encouraged the warden to let him see his wife and the warden reluctantly allowed it. John saw Melinda looking very sickly so he used his supernatural powers to cure her of her ailment. After Melinda's color returned to her and she looked better, she mentioned to John that she dreamed of him. Clarkson had roles in the movies "Shutter Island", "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" and "No Reservations".

In 2004, she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for the movie "Pieces of April", but lost to Renee Zellweger for "Cold Mountain".

Other Oscar nominees for Best Supporting Actress that year were Shohreh Aghdashloo for "House of Sand and Fog", Marcia Gay Harden for "Mystic River" and Holly Hunter for "Thirteen".
3. I was disgusted with the way Eduard Delacroix's execution was handled and commented that the disgusting smell from it would last for years. Who played me?

Answer: James Cromwell

Cromwell, born in 1940 in Los Angeles, California, portrayed Hal Moores. Hal ran the prison where Paul and the other guards worked in this movie and was seen right after Eduard Delacroix's execution. Something went wrong during the execution and it led to Eduard's head catching fire so Hal vented his frustration about it. Paul commented that the execution was a success but Hal said it hardly was a success due to the reeking smell which would last for years in the room. Later on in the film, Hal was surprised to see Paul and a couple of other guards bring John Coffey to his home so he got his gun out and threatened to shoot. Paul and the other guards talked him down since they believed John could help his wife, Melinda, so Hal allowed John to help her and was pleased when he aided his wife. Cromwell was seen in the films "The Queen", "W." and "Eraser".

In 1996, he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for the film "Babe", but he lost to Kevin Spacey for "The Usual Suspects".

Other Oscar nominees for Best Supporting Actor that year were Ed Harris for "Apollo 13", Brad Pitt for "Twelve Monkeys" and Tim Roth for "Rob Roy".
4. I was Paul's friend in the nursing home. Who played me?

Answer: Eve Brent

Brent was cast in the minor role of Elaine Connelly. Elaine was a resident of the nursing home where Paul was and was first seen sipping some tea. Shortly afterward, Elaine asked Paul if he was alright since he did not look fine. While Paul and Elaine watched television, a song came on which reminded Paul of the time he was a prison guard, so he began to cry. Elaine asked him what the matter was and he insisted on leaving the room.

The two of them went someplace private to talk and Elaine listened to him tell his story about his days working as a prison guard. Brent guest starred on the TV series "Scrubs", "JAG" and "Who's the Boss?"
5. I realized that Percy did not wet the sponge for Eduard's execution. Who played me?

Answer: Tom Hanks

Hanks, born on July 9th, 1956 in Concord, California, was cast as Paul Edgecomb. Paul worked as a security guard at a prison and oversaw executions since he was in charge of the death row section of the prison. Paul often clashed with another prison guard named Percy and eventually befriended a prisoner named John Coffey.

When it came time for Eduard Delacroix's execution, Percy did not wet the sponge and this led to Eduard's head catching fire when the electricity passed through his body. In one scene, John grabbed Paul and used his supernatural powers to help cure an infection which Paul had.

At the end of the movie, Paul and a couple of other guards escorted John Coffey to the electric chair and Paul carried out the execution while shedding a tear for John. Hanks had parts in the movies "The Terminal", "Catch Me If You Can" and "Angels and Demons".

In 1994, he won an Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for the movie "Philadelphia". Other Oscar nominees for Best Actor in a Leading Role that year were Daniel-Day Lewis for "In the Name of the Father", Laurence Fishburne for "What's Love Got To Do With It", Anthony Hopkins for "The Remains of the Day" and Liam Neeson for "Schindler's List".
6. I wanted John to die since I believed he killed my two daughters. Who played me?

Answer: Paula Malcolmson

Malcolmson, a native of Belfast, Northern Ireland, played Marjorie Detterick. Marjorie was married to Howie Detterick and they had two daughters, Cora and Kathe. Both Cora and Kathe went missing one day so Marjorie frantically told her husband they were gone, and they gathered up the townsfolk to go look for them.

They came upon John Coffey holding both girls' dead bodies in his arms and assumed he killed them. When it came time for John to be executed, Marjorie told him that she hoped the electricity hurt him good. Malcolmson guest starred on the TV shows "ER", "Cold Case" and "Lost".
7. I was eventually committed to a mental hospital. Who played me?

Answer: Doug Hutchison

Hutchison, born in 1960 in Dover, Delaware, portrayed Percy Wetmore. Percy was a guard at the prison where Paul worked and was first seen escorting John Coffey to his cell. As he did this, he shouted that there was a dead man walking and this annoyed many of the others. Percy was on bad terms with a prisoner named Eduard Delacroix and decided to do something drastic at his execution.

When it came time to place a wet sponge on Eduard's head, Percy made it appear as if he dipped the sponge in water but he did not, so he therefore put a dry sponge on Eduard's head. Paul realized what Percy had done, and midway through Eduard's execution, his head caught fire.

When Percy attempted to turn around so he did not have to look at Eduard burn alive, Paul made him look at Eduard so he could see what he had done.

In Percy's last scene, he was seen being committed to a mental institution. Hutchison had guest starring stints on the TV series "24", "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit" and "CSI: Miami".
8. Percy shot me dead. Who played me?

Answer: Sam Rockwell

Rockwell landed the role of Wild Bill Wharton. Wild Bill was a prisoner on death row and it was revealed in the movie that he was the one who killed Mr. and Mrs. Detterick's two daughters. This occurred when John grabbed a hold of Paul and used his supernatural powers to show him just how the two daughters died.

In one scene, Wild Bill looked at one of the guards and then spat on him so this led to his spending time in solitary confinement for a short while. Near the end of the movie, Percy got out his gun and shot Wild Bill dead while he was in his cell. Rockwell acted in the films "Charlie's Angels", "Frost/Nixon" and "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind".
9. I had a pet mouse named Mr. Jingles. Who played me?

Answer: Michael Jeter

Jeter, born on August 26th, 1952 in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, was cast as Eduard Delacroix. Eduard was a prisoner on death row at the prison and it was never stated why he was there. Eduard had a pet mouse which he named Mr. Jingles and he was upset in one scene when it looked like Percy had killed the mouse. Luckily, John Coffey cured the mouse with his special powers, which pleased Eduard. Eduard and Percy clashed on many occasions and this went on all the way up to the scene where Eduard was put to death. Once Eduard's head caught fire during his execution, the people who watched it immediately fled the room. Jeter starred in the movies "Jurassic Park III", "Patch Adams" and "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas".
10. I was falsely accused of killing two girls. Who played me?

Answer: Michael Clarke Duncan

Duncan, a native of Chicago, Illinois, played John Coffey. John was accused of killing the Detterick girls since he was caught holding their dead bodies in his arms while he cried for them. He was sentenced to death and then escorted to the prison where Paul worked. John had a special talent for invoking supernatural powers and this helped out a couple characters in the movie, such as Paul and Melinda. During Eduard Delacroix's death, John cried out for Eduard.

When it came time for John to be executed, he asked that there not be anything over his face since he was scared of the dark.

The guards honored John's request and it was right before Paul began the instructions to carry out John's execution that he shook John's hand. Duncan guest starred on the TV shows "The Suite Life of Zack and Cody", "Chuck" and "Two and a Half Men".

In 2000, Duncan received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for "The Green Mile" but lost to Michael Caine for "The Cider House Rules".
