Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I used to work as a school teacher. Who played me?

Answer: Jack Nicholson

Nicholson, born on April 22nd, 1937 in New York City, was cast as Jack Torrance. Jack used to work as a school teacher but was now looking to be a caretaker for several months at a hotel in Colorado. He drove to The Overlook Hotel since he had a job interview scheduled.

After Jack received the offer, he accepted it and moved his family into the hotel for the upcoming winter season. While living at the hotel, Jack started to behave really strangely and it was revealed that the place was possessed by an evil spirit. Near the end of the movie, Jack scared his wife, Wendy, and she ran away from him. Jack also chased after his son, Danny, and eventually their chase led outside to an oversized maze area. Danny ran through the maze and Jack went after him, during a major snowstorm.

While running to catch Danny, Jack froze to death. Nicholson starred in the movies, "Flight to Fury", "The Terror" and "The Wild Ride". In 1970, he received his first ever Academy Award nomination in the Best Supporting Actor category for the movie, "Easy Rider".

However, he lost the award to Gig Young for the movie, "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" Other Oscar nominees for Best Supporting Actor that year were Rupert Crosse for "The Reivers", Elliott Gould for "Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice" and Anthony Quayle for "Anne of the Thousand Days".
2. I discovered that my husband had been writing a sentence over and over again on a typewriter. Who played me?

Answer: Shelley Duvall

Duvall, a native of Houston, Texas, played Wendy Torrance. Wendy was Jack's wife and mother to their child, Danny, and she was often seen acting very timid around Jack. She implied, in many scenes, that she happened to be very scared of her husband. Wendy noticed many pieces of paper on Jack's typewriter which had the phrase, "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" written over and over again. Jack appeared, frightening Wendy, so she backed away from him and told him to stay away from her. When Jack refused, she proceeded up the stairs to get away from him. Jack got close to Wendy so she used a baseball bat to hit him.

He fell down the stairs and was knocked unconscious. Wendy then dragged him to the meat locker in the kitchen and locked him inside and went to her room to take a nap.

When she awoke, she noticed Danny had a knife in his hand and had written the word "redrum" in lipstick on the door. Then, she saw that Jack had somehow gotten out of the meat locker, since he was using an ax to try to get into her room. Wendy went into the bathroom with Danny and managed to get him outside via the window. Due to her size and the heavy snowfall, she was unable to get outside herself. Jack used an ax to break through the door and got enough of it busted open to reveal his face to Wendy.

When he did this, he said "Here's Johnny!" By this point, Wendy had a knife in her hand so she used it to cut Jack's hand. Duvall had roles in the films, "Annie Hall", "Popeye" and "Roxanne".
3. I often said the word, "redrum". Who played me?

Answer: Danny Lloyd

Lloyd, born in 1973 in Chicago, Illinois, played Danny Torrance. Danny was Jack and Wendy's son and was seen telling his dad that he was hungry, while they were on their way to The Overlook Hotel. Jack told Danny that he should have had his breakfast. Throughout the movie, Danny was constantly seen at The Overlook Hotel witnessing two girls who were ghosts.

It was revealed that the girls had been murdered by their father, a man who once was The Overlook's caretaker. He also repeatedly said the word, "redrum", which was "murder" spelled backwards.

At the end of the movie, Danny saw his father in the hotel kitchen with an ax in hand, so he ran through the hotel to avoid him. When he ran outside the hotel, he darted through the oversized maze. Lloyd was also seen in the 1982 TV movie, "Will: The Autobiography of G. Gordon Liddy".
4. I conducted a job interview with Jack. Who played me?

Answer: Barry Nelson

Nelson, born on April 16th, 1917 in San Francisco, California, landed the role of Stuart Ullman. Stuart was the general manager at The Overlook Hotel and Jack was seen entering the hotel one day, since he had a job interview with him regarding a position as a caretaker for the hotel for the winter season.

The front desk clerk showed Jack where Stuart's office was so Jack went there and introduced himself to Stuart. Stuart introduced Jack to his secretary and then asked him if he had trouble finding the place. Jack responded that he had no such trouble and it took him three and a half hours to get to the hotel. Stuart commented on what great timing he had. Stuart then asked Jack if he wanted some coffee. Jack said he would like a cup of coffee so Stuart instructed Susie to get both him and Jack cups of coffee. Just before Susie left the office, Stuart told her about another favor he wanted her to see to while she was getting the coffee. Stuart hired Jack to be the caretaker for the winter season, when The Overlook Hotel would be closed to the public. Nelson guest starred on the TV shows, "Murder, She Wrote", "Dallas" and "Battlestar Galactica".
5. I asked Danny if he smelled anything funny while he brushed his teeth. Who played me?

Answer: Anne Jackson

Jackson was cast as a doctor in a small role for "The Shining". Danny injured himself one day while brushing his teeth, so Wendy phoned the doctor to come to her home to make sure he was okay. The doctor was seen examining Danny and then she asked him if he smelled anything funny while he cleaned his teeth, or if he saw anything strange. Danny responded to her that he did not see or smell anything awkward.

The doctor then asked Danny if he recalled brushing his teeth and Danny told her he did. She then asked Danny about what he next remembered, after brushing his teeth. Danny claimed that he heard someone telling him to wake up, prompting the doctor to ask Danny what he did before brushing his teeth. Danny then spoke about a brief conversation he had with Tony.

She wondered if Tony was perhaps one of his stuffed animals but he informed her Tony lived in his mouth. Wendy interjected and told the doctor that Tony was Danny's imaginary friend. Jackson was seen in the movies, "Something Sweet", "Lucky Days" and "Funny About Love".
6. I met Jack in Stuart Ullman's office. Who played me?

Answer: Barry Dennen

Dennen, a native of Chicago, Illinois portrayed Bill Watson. Bill worked at The Overlook Hotel and met with Jack in Stuart's office right after Stuart hired Jack to take care of the hotel during the winter season. Stuart instructed Bill to show Jack around the place, after he continued talking to Jack about what his job entailed. Bill told Stuart he had no problem with showing Jack around the hotel. Stuart mentioned to Bill that Jack was a school teacher but Jack interrupted Stuart to tell both him and Bill that he was a former teacher. Bill then asked Jack what line of work he was in now so Jack told him he was a writer. Bill commented that Jack being a caretaker ought to be a change for him and Jack said he was looking for a change. Dennen had guest starring stints on the TV series', "Murphy Brown", "Mr. Belvedere" and "L.A. Law".
7. I worked as a chef at The Overlook Hotel. Who played me?

Answer: Scatman Crothers

Crothers, born in 1910 in Terre Haute, Indiana, played Dick Halloran. In one scene, Stuart Ullman spoke to Jack and Wendy and then noticed Dick close by them. Stuart introduced Dick to both Jack and Wendy and mentioned that Dick was the chef at the hotel. Stuart informed Dick that Jack and Wendy would look after the hotel during the winter so Dick commented on how great that was. Dick asked both Jack and Wendy how they liked the hotel so far and Wendy responded that she found the place wonderful. Before Jack could respond to Dick, Wendy noticed Danny nearby and said hello to him. Stuart advised Dick to show Wendy the kitchen area while he spoke to Jack in private so Dick informed Stuart that would not be a problem. Dick and Danny befriended one another and both of them had a special power in communicating, called the shining. Once Dick sensed Danny was in trouble, he raced back to The Overlook Hotel.

In his final scene, he was seen walking through The Overlook Hotel asking if anyone was there. All of a sudden, Jack appeared and killed Dick with his ax. Crothers portrayed characters in the films, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", "Bronco Billy" and "Scavenger Hunt".
8. Jack told me that he had two twenties and two tens in his wallet. Who played me?

Answer: Joe Turkel

Turkel, born on July 15th, 1927 in Brooklyn, New York, landed the role of Lloyd. Lloyd was a bartender and his ghost appeared to Jack in a couple scenes in the movie. Midway through the movie, Jack went to the bar to talk to Lloyd and mentioned to him, in a joking manner that it was a little slow that evening. Jack then laughed at his own joke while Lloyd simply told Jack that it indeed was slow. Lloyd asked Jack what he wanted so Jack said he was glad that Lloyd asked him that since Jack had two twenty dollar bills and two ten dollar bills in his wallet to pay for drinks. Jack sarcastically stated he was afraid that money would be in his wallet until next April. Jack asked Lloyd if he could give him a glass of bourbon so Lloyd went to get Jack a glass of bourbon.

In a later scene, Jack went to the bar and this time Lloyd served him bourbon on the rocks. Turkel guest starred on the TV series', "Boy Meets World", "Miami Vice" and "Tales from the Darkside".
9. I accidentally spilled some alcoholic beverages on Jack. Who played me?

Answer: Philip Stone

Stone, a native of Kirkstall, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, was cast as Delbert Grady in "The Shining". Delbert was seen midway through the movie, when Jack went into the bar room while many guests attended a party. All of these people were ghosts. When Jack got up to leave, after having a drink, Delbert walked by and accidentally spilled some drinks on him. Delbert apologized to Jack about what he did but Jack said it was okay. Delbert then suggested to Jack that they go to the bathroom so he could clean him up there.

While in the bathroom, Jack asked for his name so Delbert told Jack who he was. When Jack repeated Delbert's name back to him, he started to look weird and then asked Delbert if he had seen him someplace before. Delbert replied that it was unlikely that they had previously run into one another.

It turned out that Delbert once was the caretaker at The Overlook Hotel and went insane while he held the job. He eventually killed his wife and two daughters with an ax. Stone had roles in the movies, "A Clockwork Orange", "Barry Lyndon" and "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom".
