Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who wires Ranse and Hallie Stoddard about the death of Tom Doniphon, and meets them at the train in Shinbone?

Answer: Link Appleyard

No one else in town knows the Senator and his wife are coming. Apparently Link did not choose to tell anyone. Ranse says Link's wire caught them in St. Louis, but he does not mention why they were that far west already.
2. Ranse agrees to an interview with a young Shinbone Star reporter because Dutton Peabody had once done what?

Answer: fired him

Ranse remarks that the only reason he will do the interview is because Dutton Peabody - founder, publisher, and editor-in-chief of the Star - had once fired him. The circumstances surrounding his statement are not shown in the movie.
3. When Ranse is brought into town after the the stage robbery, what does Nora put in the coffee she gives him?

Answer: Swedish brandy

Because of his injuries from the beating with Liberty Valance's whip, Nora says drinking this will make him feel better. Tom says it's not mannerly out west to let a man to drink alone, but Hallie takes the bottle away from him.
4. What does Tom use as targets when he tries to show Ranse how to shoot a gun?

Answer: paint cans

Tom has Ranse put three cans on the fence posts, the center post last. Tom shoots two and then the one on the center post, splattering paint all over Ranse. He says that's the kind of trick Ranse will be up against if he faces Liberty Valance.
5. When Valance barges into the elections in Shinbone, where does he say he lives that gives him the right to be there?

Answer: where he hangs his hat

Valance manages to have members of his gang nominate him as a delegate to the convention for Statehood. As always, this is done with force and threats to the townsmen.
6. In Shinbone, at the elections for delegates, how many other men vote for Liberty Valance?

Answer: two

Valance threatens the men of the town not to vote any way they'll regret when they're alone. Only the two gang members with him vote for Valance. They are the same two we see with him whenever he is in town.
7. Who are the two delegates elected in Shinbone to go to the convention in Capitol City for Statehood?

Answer: Ranse Stoddard and Dutton Peabody

Tom Doniphon declines his nomination because of his personal plans to marry Hallie. So only three men are voted on - Ranse, Valance, and Dutton Peabody.
8. Who sets fire to Tom's house after the shootout between Valance and Ranse?

Answer: Tom

When Tom goes back to Peter's Place after the shooting, he sees Hallie with Ranse, and realizes he has lost her. He gets drunk and Pompey insists they return home. In anger, Tom enters his house and throws a lamp into the new room he has built. Pompey rescues him from the fire and releases all the horses.
9. How many shots does Liberty Valance fire at Ranse, before the final one intended to hit right between the eyes?

Answer: three

Valance fires the first, and breaks a hanging pottery vase beside Ranse's head. The second hits Ranse in the right arm, knocking his gun to the ground. When he tries to pick it up with his left hand, Liberty fires the third at the ground beside it. His final shot is simultaneous with the one fired by Tom, the one that kills Valance.
10. At the end of the movie, how long does the train conductor say it will take for Ranse and Hallie to be back in Washington?

Answer: two days and two nights

He tells them that their train will make 25 m.p.h. He also says they have wired ahead to Junction City where they will hold the express. Ranse replies he will write a letter to the officials of the railroad to thank them for their kindness and for going to all that trouble.
