Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Besides 'Charlie And The Chocolate Factory', all but one of the following was written by Roald Dahl. Which was not?

Answer: 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang'

While Dahl wrote the screenplay for 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang', the book was written by Ian Fleming, the creator of master spy James Bond.
2. In what city was 'Willy Wonka' filmed?

Answer: Munich

Production notes for the film claimed that Munich was chosen as the filming site because of it's reputation as the 'Storybook Capital of Germany', the home of the Brothers Grimm. The Munich Gas Works was used as the front of the Wonka factory.
3. Roald Dahl's wife, Oscar-winning actress Patricia Neal, starred opposite Jack Albertson (Grampa Joe) in this film:

Answer: 'The Subject Was Roses'

It was for his role in this film that Albertson won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar in 1969 (Neal won hers in 'Hud').
4. Before Gene Wilder was selected to play Willy Wonka, what legendary actor was considered?

Answer: Fred Astaire

Also considered for the role was Joel Grey (Cabaret).
5. Of the five principal children in the film, which one spoke no English?

Answer: Augustus

Michael Bollner (Augustus) spoke no English and had to learn his lines phonetically. Currently, as an accountant in his native Germany, he now speaks English fluently.
6. Which child was a cast member of 'Dark Shadows'?

Answer: Violet

Denise Nickerson (Violet) starred as Amy Jennings in the gothic soap from 1968-70 and also spent time with 'The Electric Company'. She has since left acting for a career in nursing.
7. Which child still acts to this day?

Answer: Veruca

Julie Dawn Cole (Veruca) was the oldest of the children at age 13 during filming. She has been a prominent face and voice on British television, including the British soap 'Eastenders', for a number of years. Paris Theman (Mike) also acts occasionally (see below).
8. After 'Willy Wonka', how many other movies did Peter Ostrum (Charlie) star in?

Answer: None

'Willy Wonka' was Ostrum's only foray in the film world. He left acting to become a veterinarian.
9. Actor Roy Kinnear (Veruca's father, Mr. Salt) acted in not one, but two films with this rock superstar.

Answer: John Lennon

Kinnear starred with Lennon and his Beatle bandmates in 'Help!' and with him solo, in the black comedy 'How I Won The War'.
10. The photo shown of the last Golden Ticket winner in Paraguay (later revealed as a fraud) was actually this:

Answer: A Nazi fugitive

The photo shown by the newscaster is Martin Borman, the second ranking member of the German Nazi Party, behind Adolph Hitler.
11. What is unusual about most of Wonka's dialogue in the movie?

Answer: They are mostly literary quotes

Wonka freely quotes from Shakespeare, Arthur Shaugnessy, Ogden Nash, Oscar Wilde and others. This was not in the original script that Dahl wrote. All of the numerous literary references were added by David Seltzer when he re-wrote the screenplay.
12. When Willy plays the musical lock, Mrs. TeeVee smugly says that the composer is Rachmaninoff. This is wrong. Who wrote the music?

Answer: Mozart

From Mozart's 'The Marriage of Figaro'.
13. In what year did 'Willy Wonka' debut?

Answer: 1971

June 30, 1971. Gene Wilder was present at the opening in New York City along with the Wonkamobile. Free ice cream and chocolate bars were given to all.
14. Who currently makes Wonka-related candy?

Answer: Nestle's

While Nestle's currently makes the new Wonka bars, Quaker Oats, a long-time backer of Saturday morning cartoons in the U.S., financed the filming of the movie back in 1970. It was their only venture into the film indusry.
15. Who took the song 'The Candy Man' to number one in the American music charts in 1972?

Answer: Sammy Davis Jr.

The song was written by Newley and Briscusse, who were nominated along with Walter Scharf for an Oscar for Best Music, Scoring Adaptation and Original Song Score. Woods, playing the owner of the candy store, Bill, sang it in the movie.
16. Who was the only child to sing solo in the movie?

Answer: Veruca

While Charlie also sang, it was in a duet with Grampa Joe ('I've Got A Golden Ticket'). Veruca sang the marvelous 'I Want It Now!', which, according to movie notes, took 38 takes, since there was so much choreographed interaction between her and the Oompa-Loompas.
17. Which of the following has Paris Theman (Mike TeeVee) NOT done since the movie?

Answer: Written a best-seller book

Not only does he have his own website (www.miketv.com), but has also made appearences in such films as 'The Doors' and 'The Big Lebowski'.
18. Why was the movie not titled the same as the book?

Answer: A fear of racial terminology

The film's name was changed from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory because some executives feared that the name 'Charlie' had racist connotations to Asians, especially with the Vietnam War going on at the time.

However, a documentary attached to the 30th Anniversary Edition of the film stated that the name change was to emphasize an upcoming sale of Wonka chocolate bars to coincide with the release of the film. There were problems, however, with the bars and the candy was never sold.
19. What character in the book did not make it to the screen?

Answer: Charlie's father

Charlie's father was 'killed off' in the movie, but reappeared in the Tim Burton remake in 2005, played by Noah Tayler.
20. TRUE OR FALSE: Roald Dahl hated the movie.

Answer: True

According to Jeremy Treglown's biography of Dahl, executives were unhappy that his script was almost identical to the book, so they threw out about half of it and the script was rewritten (without credit) by David Seltzer. The 2005 remake was much closer to Dahl's story.
