Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Auntie Em! Auntie Em! ______ my pretty!" Finish this quote, spoken by The Wicked Witch of the West.

Answer: "I'll give you Auntie Em"

This quote is spoken by the Wicked Witch through her crystal ball, whilst Dorothy is trapped within her castle. Auntie Em had previously been seen in the ball, calling to Dorothy. Dorothy responds, crying "Auntie Em! Antie Em! I'm here in Oz, Auntie Em and I'm trying to get home to you! Oh, don't go away, I'm frightened!" When the Witch responds, Dorothy, of course, can hear her and breaks down sobbing once more. The Witch's motive is most likely to taunt Dorothy.

The Wicked Witch of the West had a total of twelve lines cut from the movie because audiences complained that she was too scary.
2. "Some place where there isn't any trouble. Do you suppose there is such a place, Toto? There must be. Not a place you can get to by a boat or a train. It's far, far away, ______." Finish this quote, spoken by Dorothy Gale.

Answer: "Behind the moon, beyond the rain"

This line is spoken by Dorothy and comes directly before the song "Over the Rainbow". On the farm in Kansas, Dorothy has just been trying to explain the trouble she is in, with Ms. Gulch, to Auntie Em and others. They, however, go about their business, not thinking much of it. Right before Dorothy speaks this line, Auntie Em says, "Just help us out today and find yourself a place where you won't get into any trouble."

The song "Over the Rainbow" was cut from the movie after the second preview because some producers believed it slowed down the plot of the film and MGM objected to having one of its stars singing on a farm with haystacks. One producer, however, won them over and the song went on to be a classic, demanded at every concert Judy Garland gave.
3. "Put 'em up! Put 'em up! Which one of you first? I'll fight you both together if you want! I'll fight you ______! I'll fight you standing on one foot! I'll fight you with my eyes closed!" Finish this quote, spoken by the Cowardly Lion.

Answer: "with one paw tied behind my back"

This line is one of the first that the Cowardly Lion speaks in the film. Dorothy, Scarecrow, and Tinman have just entered the wild forest when the Cowardly Lion springs upon them with a great amount of false fortitude, fooling Dorothy and her friends for a moment, before they discover the coward within him.

Bert Lahr, the actor who played the Cowardly Lion, was wearing a costume made of actual lion skins that weighed over fifty pounds!
4. "Elmira Gulch! just because you own half the county doesn't mean you have power over the rest of us! For twenty three years I've been dying to tell you what I thought of you! And now, well, being a _____ I can't say it!" Finish this quote, spoken by Auntie Em.

Answer: "Christian woman"

This is from one of the first scenes in the film. Auntie Em wants to express her deep dislike of Ms. Gulch, to whom Em has just given Dorothy's dog, Toto.

In the original book, "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" by L. Frank Baum, the tornado comes in on page three. There is no dispute with Miss Elmira Gulch or any farm hands that become characters in Oz. In fact, in the book, Dorothy actually goes to Oz and it is not a dream.
5. "I don't know, but some people without brains _____?" Finish this quote, spoken by the Scarecrow.

Answer: "Do an awful lot of talking, don't they"

This line is spoken by Scarecrow to Dorothy in the scene where Dorothy discovers Scarecrow for the first time in the cornfield. Scarecrow says this in response to Dorothy's question, "Well, how can you talk if you haven't got a brain?" Although the Scarecrow claims not to have a brain he, and the rest of the foursome already have what they are looking for. This witty line shows just that.

The scarecrow's song that follows this short scene actually involved an extensive dance number that was cut because the film proved to be too long.
6. "My, My, My goodness! I can talk again! Oh, oil my arm please! Oil my______!" Finish this quote, spoken by the Tinman.

Answer: "elbow"

Dorothy and Scarecrow find the Tinman in the woods and have just oiled his mouth, allowing him to speak. He has rusted solid so he wants his whole body oiled, his elbow especially because he has been holding up his axe for a very long time. He, therefore, requests that Dorothy and Scarecrow oil him.

The rumor that a munchkin is hanging from a rope in the background of this scene is entirely untrue. What you are actually seeing is a large bird, one of many, that was rented from the zoo to make it look as if the scene was filmed outdoors.

Buddy Ebsen was originally cast as the Tinman but he suffered extensively from the aluminum powder used in his make up, which almost killed him. They recast Jack Haley in the part of the Tinman and switched his make-up to aluminum paste.
7. "Oh rubbish! You have no power here! ______!" Finish this quote, spoken by Glinda.

Answer: "Now be gone before someone drops a house on you too"

This quote is taken from Munchkinland, the first scene filmed in technicolor. The Wicked Witch of the West has just, not so kindly, requested that Dorothy return the magic ruby slippers to her at once. Glinda tells Dorothy to stay "tight inside" of the ruby slippers, despite the Witch's threats. The Witch then says, "You stay out of this, Glinda, or I'll fix you as well!" To which, Glinda responds with the answer. She most likely says this to get rid of the Witch so Dorothy can begin her journey safely to the Emerald city.

Billie Burke, who played Glinda said that The Wizard of Oz was her favorite film of all the films she made and for years afterword she signed all her autographs, "Billie Burke, the Good Fairy of the North".
8. "A heart is not judged by how much you love, ________." Finish this quote, spoken by the Wizard of Oz.

Answer: "but by how much you are loved by others"

The Wizard has just been discovered as a fraud and has proceeded to give each friend what they seek. The Tinman, who requested a heart, has received a heart-shaped clock and the above words of wisdom from the wizard.

Frank Morgan, who played the Wizard, also played four other roles: Professor Marvel, the guard, the cabbie in the carriage pulled by the horse of a different color, and the doorman.
9. "I'm melting! I'm melting! Oh what a world, what a world! _____?" Finish this quote, spoken by the Wicked Witch of the West.

Answer: "who would have thought a good little girl like you could destroy my beautiful wickedness"

This quote is from the scene where the Wicked Witch of the West is conquered at last by Dorothy and a bucket of water. It is nothing more than ironic that somebody as young and innocent as Dorothy, with something as simple as water, could destroy the Wicked Witch of the West. That is the reason why the Wicked Witch chose this line, (the answer), as her famed last words.

The hat that Margaret Hamilton, the Witch, wore in this scene was actually bigger than in previous scenes because the director wanted to give the illusion of her face shrinking.
10. "Oh, but anyway, Toto, we're home! Home! And this is my room ______ because I love you all! Oh Auntie Em, there's no place like home!" Finish this quote, spoken by Dorothy Gale.

Answer: "And I'm never gonna leave here ever, ever again"

This is the very last line in the movie, before the end credits and includes one of the most famous phrases of all time, "There's no place like home!" Dorothy is speaking to Auntie Em and everyone else on the Kansas farm. She is simply ecstatic to be home again with everyone who loves her.

Every scene in "The Wizard of Oz" was filmed indoors on sound stages, including the very convincing Kansas scenes. One technician was hired for the sole purpose of painting the clouds in the movie.
