Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what city is the song taking place?

Answer: San Francisco

This becomes evident in the very first line:

"It was raining hard in 'Frisco
I needed one more fare to make my night"
2. At what location did the woman hail the cab?

Answer: At the light

"A lady up ahead waved to flag me down
She got in at the light"

And the fare meter got turned on in a flash!
3. What did the lady who got into the taxi "ruin" in the rain?

Answer: Gown

Oh, where you going to, my lady blue
It's a shame you ruined your gown in the rain"

What a sweet talker!
4. What address did the lady ask the taxi driver to drive to?

Answer: Sixteen Parkside Lane

"She just looked out the window
She said, Sixteen Parkside Lane"
5. What is the name of the lady who gets into the taxi?

Answer: Sue

"I said, How are you Sue
Through the too many miles
And the too little smiles
I still remember you"

Ah! Boy meets girl. Boy loses girl. Boy meets girl again whilst driving taxi. Happens all the time!
6. What is the name of the taxi driver?

Answer: Harry

"And she said, How are you Harry"

When I was younger I always imagined this line to be "How you are hairy"! I can see how that would have presented Harry Chapin with a big problem in regard to the end of the song. He was probably wise to change it if it read this way in his first draft!
7. In what type of car did the two people in the song first "(Learn) about love"?

Answer: Dodge

"It was somewhere in a fairy tale
I used to take her home in my car
We learned about love in the back of a Dodge
The lesson hadn't gone too far"

Ah, rats...
8. Our hero wanted to learn to fly. What did our heroine want to be?

Answer: An actress

"You see, she was gonna be an actress
And I was gonna learn to fly
She took off to find the footlights
And I took off for the sky"

We never do find out in this song if Sue realised her dream of being an actress...
9. What does the taxi driver do that enables him to "fly"?

Answer: Gets stoned

"And me, I'm flying in my taxi
Taking tips, and getting stoned
I go flying so high, when I'm stoned"

Oy! This sounds like the driver I have occasionally had when I have caught taxis...
10. What size tip does the taxi driver receive?

Answer: $ 17.50

"And she handed me twenty dollars
For a two fifty fare
She said, Harry, keep the change"

20 Bucks less $ 2.50 fare equals a tip of $ 17.50. Harry wasn't proud:

"Well, another man might have been angry
And another man might have been hurt
But another man never would've let her go
I stashed the bill in my shirt"

What a guy! Bet he didn't declare it to the IRS either!
