Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Das Rheingold" begins with the three Rhinemaidens swimming in the Rhine. Which of the following is not a Rhinemaiden?

Answer: Gerhilde

Gerhilde is the name of one of the valkyries who appear in "Die Walkure", the next opera of the Ring cycle.
2. Who steals the Rhinegold from the Rhinemaidens?

Answer: Alberich

The events of the Ring are set in motion by Alberich's theft of the Rhinegold and his forging of the Ring from it.
3. What must the thief do in order to be able to forge the all-powerful ring from the Rhinegold?

Answer: Renounce love

Alberich's renunciation of love in this opera is ultimately defeated, and the world is ultimately redeemed, by Brunnhilde's sacrifice for love in "Gotterdammerung", the final opera of the cycle.

The other answers are also themes in the "Ring". Wotan sacrificed an eye to gain knowledge, and Siegfried defeated the dragon Fafner, who had transformed himself from a giant.
4. Wagner wrote his own libretto for "Das Rheingold". Which of the following chains of nonsense syllables does not appear in the opera?

Answer: Hojotoho! Hojotoho! Heiaha!

I did not make any of these up. "Heia! Heia!" and "Wallala!" are sung by the Rhinemaidens and "He da! He do!" by Donner, the god of thunder. "Hojotoho" is the valkyries' war cry and shows up for the first time in "Die Walkure".
5. Which of the following characters are not brothers?

Answer: Wotan and Loge

Wotan is the king of the gods and Loge is the fire god, who stands apart from the rest of the gods. Froh and Donner are brother gods, Fasolt and Fafner are brother giants and Alberich and Mime are brother dwarfs.
6. What or who did Wotan originally promise as payment for the giants who built Valhalla?

Answer: Freia

Wotan originally promised to hand over Freia, the goddess of youth, to the giants. During the course of the opera, Wotan realizes that this would cause the gods to grow old and lose their power. With the advice of Loge, Wotan comes up with the idea of offering the Rhinegold as an alternative form of payment.
7. In which city did "Das Rheingold" have its world premiere?

Answer: Munich

"Das Rheingold" was premiered in Munich on September 22, 1869. The first staging of the complete four-opera "Ring" cycle took place in Bayreuth in 1876.
8. Alberich has a magic helmet, the Tarnhelm, that allows him to assume any shape or form. Which of the following forms does he not assume in the opera?

Answer: Bird

Alberich transforms himself into a pillar of mist, a serpent (or dragon, depending on your preferred translation of "Riesen-Wurm" or "giant-worm") and a toad, in which form he is captured by Wotan and Loge.
9. Who has possession of the Rhinegold and the Ring at the end of "Das Rheingold"?

Answer: Fafner

At the end of "Das Rheingold", the Ring has passed from the Rhinemaidens to Alberich to Wotan to Fasolt to Fafner. It eventually finds its way to Siegfried and Brunnhilde before being returned to the Rhine.
10. What is the popular name for the final scene of "Das Rheingold"?

Answer: Entry of the Gods into Valhalla

The gods triumphantly enter Valhalla, their new home, at the end of "Das Rheingold". Thanks for playing!
