Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the highest female voice part in a four-part choir?

Answer: Soprano

Gotta' love those high notes! Sarah Brightman from the original cast of "Phantom of the Opera" is a dynamic soprano singer. Her range is phenomenal!
2. What is the lowest female voice part in a four-part choir?

Answer: Alto

Remember those few boys in high school choir who sang alto since their voices hadn't changed yet? Country legend Patsy Cline had a wonderful, rich alto voice.
3. What is the highest natural male voice part in a four-part choir?

Answer: Tenor

Occasionally, a few women with lower ranges will sing tenor. Also, Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo are two of the world's most famous tenors.
4. What is the lowest male voice part in a four-part choir?

Answer: Bass

No women singing here....the notes would be way too LOW! Think Barry White.
5. What is "a cappella" music?

Answer: Music that is sung without accompaniment

A cappella music is more difficult to sing, as the choir must work hard to stay in the correct key; there's no instrumental backing to rely on for pitches.
6. If your choir director tells you to sing "fortissimo", how should you sing?

Answer: Very loudly

Fortissimo is an Italian word which means literally "very loud." Pianissimo, or "very soft", is the opposite dynamic.
7. Remember those sight-singing exercises you had to do in school choir? Do - la - sol - fa - re ... Who is best known for using them for early sight reading training?

Answer: Kodaly

While some musical scholars credit an Italian monk, Guido d'Arezzo, as being the creator of solfege syllables, Zoltan Kodaly is perhaps best known for using and popularizing the "sol-fa syllables" as a way to give a syllabic meaning to each note of the scale. They are very helpful in learning to read music. They are also featured in the song "Do-Re-Mi" from the hit musical "The Sound of Music."

(Thanks to Julia103, who alerted me to this information!)
8. If the piece you are singing is in the key of C major, how many sharps and/or flats does it have?

Answer: none

C major is the only key with no sharps or flats.
9. What is a coloratura soprano?

Answer: A soprano with an agile and flexible voice

Think "Queen of the Night" aria from Mozart's opera "The Magic Flute." Now that lady can sing HIGH! Only a skilled coloratura soprano is capable of singing that part. However, someone like Mariah Carey isn't considered a coloratura soprano - her high notes are called "whistle tone."
10. What is the correct name of the "stick" your conductor waves around as he/she directs the choir?

Answer: baton

And as in the case of my college choir director, sometimes he would get so swept away in the music, the baton would fly right out of his hand! Thanks for playing my quiz - hope you enjoyed it!
