Gimme A Beer! Trivia Quiz

It's been a long while. I almost died, but God can't kill me (yet). This match quiz is a tribute to that cheapest of bubblies: "Beer" (or as Germs singer Darby Crash used to call it: "Beah"). I'll list the song and you match the band to the song.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Twilight Alehouse"

Answer: Genesis

"Twilight Alehouse" was a very early recording by Genesis that, at the time of its initial and very limited availability, had been unreleased officially. The song was often played in the band's early live shows and eventually recorded during the studio sessions for their 'Foxtrot' album. Yet despite being a big favorite with fans of their early live shows it remained unavailable until 1973 when it was issued as a flexi disc giveaway single for "Zig Zag" magazine.

It was eventually properly issued as the B Side for the UK single release of "I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)".
2. "Two Pints Of Lager And A Packet Of Crisps Please"

Answer: Splodgenessabounds

This wonderful 1980 single was the first release from UK punk band Splodginessabounds, released on the Deram label as one of three songs on a "triple A side" single (the other two tracks were "Simon Templer" and "Michael Booth's Talking Bum"). If you have never heard this song you must youtube it immediately.
3. "40oz To Freedom"

Answer: Sublime

Not much I can say about this song other than that when I managed a record store we were adjacent to a head shop. And the head shop blasted this record incessantly! The track itself is on the 1992 release entitled '40oz To Freedom', which was released two months after the death of their leader Bradley Nowell, who died of a heroin overdose.

The album was notorious for also including the charming song "Date Rape'. Sublime: what a class act! The new line up now performs under the name Sublime with Rome.
4. "Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers"

Answer: Motorhead

Another one everybody should get right. If only I had not decided to change it to the Motorhead version at the last second. Because I suck and I am a bad, bad man ;-) . This was a 12" EP entitled "Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers", released by Lemmy and the boys on the Big Beat label in the UK on November 27, 1980 and the track itself it is a cover of the ZZ Top song originally recorded by them and released on their great 1973 "Tres Hombres" album.
5. "Warm Beer And Cold Women"

Answer: Tom Waits

A 1975 release by everybody's favorite growler (No, that is not a toilet reference) released on his great 'Nighthawks At The Diner' two LP set.
6. "There's A Tear In My Beer"

Answer: Hank Williams

Originally recorded during one of many Nashville sessions in 1950-51, this track remained unreleased until 1989, when a demo of the track was given to his son Hank Williams Jr, who then recorded a "duet" with his father via the wonders of technology. I shall refrain from any comments regarding this being an abuse of technology. Needless to say the only Hank in my collection is of the "Sr." variety.
7. "Rowdy Beer Drinkin' Night"

Answer: GG Allin

This track was originally released in 1990 as part of the 'Troubled Troubadour' 7" ep, which had sold out long before GG's suicide in 1993. In 1995 Mountain Records main guy Stewart Brodian gathered together a bunch of other tapes and reissued the ep as an expanded cd (surely done as an act of altruism on Stewart's part and in no way as a cash in) entitled "The Troubled Troubadour + Bonus Tracks".
8. "Beer"

Answer: Reel Big Fish

This track was released in 1995 as part of the "Everything Sucks" debut LP by ska-punk band Reel Big Fish as well as a track on their "Everything Sucks" EP/Mini LP in 1996.
9. "Drinkin' Beer And Wastin' Bullets"

Answer: Luke Bryan

Let's be extremely clear on this: I like the song title. I refuse to listen to the song. Noted fan of the apostrophe Luke Bryan was born on July 17,1976. Nary a month after I moved back to the USA from Germany. Unlike me Luke apparently learned nothing from punk rock which started to hit right around the time of his birth. From what I can find out about the lad online he sure does love to pen a tune or ten about the joys of inebriation and woe to them that try to stop him from imbibing. Quick Annie: Luke found the keg, hide them thar guns!
10. "Jackin' For Malt Liquor"

Answer: Ice Cube

Former founding member of the legendary 80s gangsta rap band NWA ('Noodelz With Asparagus') was one of many rappers that decided to shill for 'St Ides' malt liquor (surely as part of their wanting to "give back" to their communities) in the 90s. Eventually 42 of these tracks were made (no irony in that number) by misc. rappers which made it possible for Ice Cube to compile them for a release entitled "Ice Cube Presents The St Ides Bootleg". Burp.
