Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where does Jack first appear?

Answer: In the doorway

"He was standin' in the doorway/ Lookin' like the Jack of Hearts." He appears there drawing attention of all those people drinking. He must look interesting or why should all the girls get so crazy about him?
2. What is on the cabaret's walls?

Answer: Mirrors

"He moved across the mirrored room." Of course some other things might be there as well but only mirrors are explicitly mentioned.
3. Where does Jack sit waiting for the show to begin?

Answer: In the corner

"Then he moved into the corner, face down like the Jack of Hearts."
4. Where does Lily first appear?

Answer: Backstage

"Backstage the girls were playin' five-card stud by the stairs."
5. What does Jim's mine excavate?

Answer: Diamonds

"Big Jim was no one's fool, he owned the town's only diamond mine." It would be unlike him to deal with anything of lower value.
6. Problems with which member of her family is Lily hinted to have?

Answer: Her father

"She'd come away from a broken home" and later "She was thinkin' 'bout her father, who she very rarely saw." Very psychoanalytical, isn't it.
7. What is proof that Lily and Jim are having an affair?

Answer: She has his ring

"It was known all around that Lily had Jim's ring/ And nothing would ever come between Lily and the king." He might take her everywhere and have her picture but as to living much more likely he lives with Rosemary.
8. Who is said to get drunk during the night?

Answer: Hanging judge

"He went to get the hangin' judge, but the hangin' judge was drunk." The picture of the law is not very optimistic, is it. By the way, the fact that he is referred to as "hanging" judge suggests what the law was all about, I guess.
9. Where does Rosemary see her reflection?

Answer: In a knife

"Rosemary started drinkin' hard and seein' her reflection in the knife" Obviously, she probably reflects in other objects too but it is the knife that is perilous. Maybe it's not the one that will lead her to the gallows but the hint is clear.
10. What does Lily tell Jack not to touch when they are together?

Answer: The wall

"Be careful not to touch the wall, there's a brand-new coat of paint." I find this line really charming because it's so pointless and yet surprisingly down-to-earth. Why, she remembers to warn him about the wall... But maybe it's just another way of reminding us of the drilling in the wall constantly going on.
11. What costume does the leading actor, who appears in the background, wear?

Answer: Of a monk

"As the leading actor hurried by in the costume of a monk." Precisely.
12. How many "doors" below the cabaret is the bank robbed by Jack's companions?

Answer: Two

"Two doors down the boys finally made it through the wall." I love it when we get to know who the mysterious Jack of Hearts is and what he is really doing in the town. Funny, but it actually adds to his romanticism.
13. What does Lily NOT think about at the end of the song?

Answer: Big Jim

"She was thinkin' 'bout her father, who she very rarely saw,/ Thinkin' 'bout Rosemary and thinkin' about the law." Surprising as it may seem, the late lover does not occupy her thoughts at all, she's more concerned about the law.
14. A verse ending with which line is not to be found on the record on "Blood on Tracks"?

Answer: "Just another night in the life of the Jack of Hearts."

The verse ending with this line is to be found in the lyric on the official site of Dylan (www.bobdylan.com). I always wonder why it's been omitted.
15. Who of the characters is not compared to a royal figure?

Answer: Jack of Hearts

"Lily was a princess", Rosemary "slipped in through the side door lookin' like a queen without a crown" and Jim is referred to as "king." It's only Jack who does not fit.
