Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the only note value that has a sharp scale with all notes being sharps and a flat scale with all notes being flats? Remember, this quiz is about MAJOR scales.

Answer: C# or Cb scales

An F major scale has 1 flat (Bb), a G major scale has 1 sharp (F#), and a Bb major scale has 2 flats (Bb and Eb).
2. Which of the following is true?

Answer: You cannot mix sharps and flats while writing a major scale.

You can't mix sharps and flats because it does not fit with the tone-semitone pattern (TTSTTTS). There are 15 major scales (or 12, depending on how you count them). The order of sharps is F C G D A E B and the order of flats is B E A D G C F.
3. What is the name of the scale with only two flats? (Please use a "b" for flat, an "^" for natural, or a "#" for sharp!)

Answer: Bb

The Bb major scale has a Bb and an Eb.
4. Which of the following is the correct Db major scale?

Answer: Db Eb F Gb Ab Bb C Db

If you follow the TTSTTTS (tone-semitone) pattern, you will discover that it is the right answer.

Answer: F C G D A E B

The sharps must go up, down, up, down, down again, up, and finally down.
6. How many sharps does an E major scale have?

Answer: 4

The E major scale is E, F#, G#, A, B, C#, D#, E.

Answer: zero

A Gb major scale cannot have sharps, seeing as it is a G FLAT scale! It does have 6 flats which are Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, and Cb.
8. Which of the following is a correct A major scale?

Answer: A B C# D E F# G# A

An A major scale has 3 sharps and obviously, no flats.
9. A G major scale has one sharp.

In the G major scale, it is an F#.
10. An Eb major scale has 3 flats and one sharp.

Answer: False

Since it is a flat scale, it cannot have any sharps. It has 3 flats - Bb, Eb, and Ab.
