He was an attorney. He had one boy and four girls. His boy had died earlier, and he lost property in the Chicago Fire. When his family prepared to go on a trip to Europe, he had other business, and sent his wife and daughters ahead. His daughters died on the ship as it sank.

When he went to rejoin his wife, he had the inspiration to write this song. He wrote it in 1873, at the approximate spot where his daughters had drowned.

He was preaching in Ireland, whne a mob assaulted him. He fled to a farmhouse, where a kind lady, Jane Moore, diverted the mob's attention. He escaped out the rear window to a little brook beside a hedge. There he wrote the words to this hymn of the ages.

He was a Sweedish pastor, and at the age of 25, he wrote this poem while treking through a thunderstorm. It was published in 1886 with the name of O Store Gud (O Great God). The English translation came about when missionary Stuart Hine was inspired while also walking through a thunderstorm nearly 40 years later. It did not become widely known until 1957.

He was a Sunday school teacher and president of the young people's society in a church in Canada. One evening at a consencration meeting, each member answered the roll call by a Scripture verse, excpet one girl. This troubled him as he thought how sad it would be if our names were called from the Lamb's Book of Life, and we weren't there to answer. Within fifteen minutes of arriving home, he wrote this well-loved hymn.

It is still the same in hymnbooks today.

During the great World's Fair evangelistic campaign, Mr. Moody and his workers gathered for prayer at the end of the day. After singing 'I need Thee every hour', Mr. Henry Varley stated that he felt he needed Christ moment by moment. This inspired Mr. Whittle, and by 2 o'clock in the morning he had writen a beautiful hymn.

Answer: William Dun Longstaff

He was a well-to-do business man. He remembered a verse the pastor had read,'Be ye holy, for I am holy.' He soon realized that holiness was the heart of the Gospel. Later Dr. Griffith John, a returned missionary to China, said, "Take time and be holy." Mr. Longstaff replaced 'and' with 'to', and soon had a song before him.

She was called the consecration poet. Even though she was frail and delicate in health, she was a dedicated student, writer and composer. She once went on a 5 day visit. Ten people lived in the house, some Christians but not rejoicing, others weren't even converted. She prayed,'Lord, give me all in this house.' And that's what he did. The last night of her visit, she wrote this song.

During his early years as a minister, George Bennard prayed for a full understanding of the cross and its plan in Christianity. While engaged in series of service in the Pokagon Church, Michigan, he perfected his most famous and successful song.

It began with "Can't you sing the wondrous story?" But when Ira Sankey first published it in 1887, it was changed to "I will Sing ..."

She wrote the words and music to this hymn. She was inspired by a pamphlet her missionary friend gave her in 1918. The pamphlet said "So then, turn your eyes upon Him, look full into His face and you will find that the things of earth will acquire a strange new dimness." She had got the idea for the chorus for this. By the end of the week, the whole song was written.

His remaining years were spent at the Methodist Home for the Aged, in Ocean Grove, New Jersey. This hymn came about from his realization of God's faithfulness every day.

On October 31, 1517, he nailed his ninety-five thesis to the door of the Cathedral of Wittenberg, Germany, symbolizing the start of the Protestant Reformation. This hymn became the battle cry of the people. For those martyred for their beliefs it was a great source of strength and inspiration. Luther caught up in the hymn the very essence of faith, and the fervor and flavor of patriotism which he found in Psalm 46, which inspired him to write this hymn.
