Every year my local oldies radio station (CKOC in Hamilton, Ontario) compiles a countdown of the top 500 oldies, based on listeners' votes. Here is a sampling of some of the songs from the '50s that made the 2004 list (not counted down in order).

Answer: I Only Have Eyes For You

The Flamingos were one of the first doo wop bands ever, and this was their biggest hit single. "I Only Have Eyes For You" charted at #11 and #3 on the Pop and R&B charts respectively.
"In the Still of the Night", by the Five Satins was #142 on the countdown, "The Great Pretender", by the Platters, was #256, and "Little Darlin'", by the Diamonds, was #59.
2. What was song #228 on the countdown? "I can make you mine, taste your lips of wine, Anytime night or day. Only trouble is, gee whiz, I'm dreamin' my life away. I need you so, that I could die. I love you so, and that is why..."

Answer: All I Have to Do is Dream

"All I Have to Do is Dream" is one of three number one hits for the Everly Brothers that were written by the husband and wife team of Felice and Boudleaux Bryant. "Wake Up Little Susie" (#432 on the countdown) and "Bird Dog" (#461 on the countdown) were the other two. I was surprised to find that the Everly Brothers only racked up one other number one hit, "Cathy's Clown" (which was #246 on the countdown, but since it was released in 1960, it did not qualify for this quiz from the '50s).
Also by the Everly Brothers, "Bye Bye Love" was #50 on the countdown.
3. What was song #6 on the countdown? "Don't stop thinking of me, Don't make me feel this way, Come on over here and love me, You know what I want you to say..."

Answer: Don't Be Cruel

"Don't Be Cruel" was one of eleven singles that Elvis released in 1956, all of which became gold sellers. It was a pivotal year for Elvis, as it was the year that he made his first appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show", and also the year that he made his first movie "Love Me Tender".
Also by Elvis, "Jailhouse Rock" was #15 on the countdown, "Love Me Tender" was #120, and "I Got Stung" was #499.
4. What was song #29 on the countdown? "I had a girl, Donna was her name. Since she left me, I've never been the same. 'Cause I love my girl, Donna, where can you be? Where can you be?"

Answer: Donna

Ritchie Valens had his first hit in 1958 with the song "Come On, Let's Go". "Donna", released as the flip side of his biggest hit "La Bamba", was written for his highschool girlfriend, Donna Ludwig. Valens was only 17 years old when he went on The Winter Dance Party tour with a lot of other fine musicians, and died in the plane crash of Feb 3, 1959 that also killed Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper.

Answer: Yakety Yak

"Yakety Yak" was the first #1 hit for the Coasters, on both the Pop and the R&B charts. The Coasters have the distinction of being the first group to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in 1987.
"Shake Rattle and Roll", by Bill Haley and the Comets, was #221 on the countdown, "Be-Bop-A-Lula", by Gene Vincent was #428, and "Rebel Rouser", by Duane Eddy, was #488.

Ricky Nelson literally grew up in show business. As the son of Ozzie and Harriet Nelson, he started his career on his parents' television show, which is where he also launched his music career by singing "I'm Walkin'", in 1957.
A year later, he had his first #1 hit with "Poor Little Fool".
"Come Go With Me", by the Del Vikings, was #98 on the countdown, "Why DO Fools Fall in Love", by Frankie Lyman and the Teenagers, was #208, and "It's All in the Game", by Tommy Edwards, was #248.

Also by Buddy Holly, "Peggy Sue" was #145 on the countdown, "My Prayer", by the Platters, was #397, and "Tears On My Pillow", by Little Anthony and the Imperials, was #310.

"A Teenager in Love" was a #5 hit for Dion and the Belmonts, a group who took their name from Belmont Street in the Bronx. They were also part of The Winter Dance Party tour, and Dion turned down a chance to ride in the plane that crashed with such tragic results.
"I Wonder Why", also by Dion and the Belmonts, was #151 on the countdown, "Lonely Teardrops", by Jackie Wilson, was #290, and "We Got Love", by Bobby Rydell, was #450.
9. What was song #33 on the countdown? "...I'm all alone with nothin' to do. I've got everything you could think of, But all I want is someone to love. Answer: Lonely Boy

Born in Canada's capital of Ottawa, Paul Anka released his first record at the age of fifteen. When he was eighteen, he sang "Lonely Boy", which he co-wrote with Joe Dowell, while playing a small role in the movie "Girl's Town".
Also by Paul Anka, "Diana" was #114 on the countdown, and "Put Your Head On My Shoulder" was #405. "Book of Love", by the Monotones was #408.

"Venus" spent 5 weeks in the number one spot for Frankie Avalon, becoming his first million selling single, and his biggest hit ever. Avalon is also a talented trumpet player, and was discovered when playing at a party given by Al Martino to celebrate his big recording contract.
In the '60s, Avalon became better known for the surfing movies that he made with former Mouseketeer Annette Funicello.
