Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "The Windmills of Your Mind" opens with one single, stand-alone word. What is that word?

Answer: round

This hauntingly beautiful song was written by Alan and Marilyn Bergman for the 1968 film, "The Thomas Crown Affair". The unusual touch of opening with just the word 'round' sets the tone for what is to come throughout the song.
2. "The Windmills of Your Mind" was the only Best Song Nominee for the Academy Awards of 1968 that was NOT the name of the film from which it came.

Answer: True

"The Windmills of Your Mind" came from "The Thomas Crown Affair". The other four nominees for Best Song had the exact same title as the film it was in. They were: "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang", "For the Love of Ivy", "Funny Girl", and "Star!".
3. The lyrics speak of an amusement park ride "...that's running rings around the moon". What fun ride is this?

Answer: a carousel

"The Windmills of Your Mind" is filled with vivid imagery. The carousel running rings around the moon is only one.
4. "Keys that jingle in your pocket, words that _____ in your head". So the song goes. But what missing word describes what is going on in your head?

Answer: jangle

It's hard to explain that jangling, but maybe it explains why we lose our car keys.
5. Have you ever had a vacation or summer go quickly? Most everybody has. "The Windmills of Your Mind" offers an unusual explanation for summer going so quickly. What is the question the song asks?

Answer: Was it something that you said?

"Why did summer go so quickly? Was it something that you said?" The song asks a cryptic and curious question. The Bergmans wrote more subtle thought-provoking songs such as "The Way We Were" and "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?".
6. Next time you are walking along the shore, remember (according to "The Windmills of Your Mind"), that lovers leave these in the sand.

Answer: footprints

It's time to mention three of the many artists who have recorded "The Windmills of Your Mind". Noel Harrison, son of famous actor Rex Harrison, first recorded the song which, despite its Oscar win, did not chart in the U.S. top 40. In Britain the song went into the top 20 in early 1969. Two other artists, Dusty Springfield and Jose Feliciano also recorded memorable versions of the song.
7. "The Windmills of Your Mind" also asks about the source of the sound of distant drumming. You don't have to look too far for the answer. Where do the lyrics suggest the drumming may be coming from?

Answer: the fingers of your hand

Even more artists who recorded "The Windmills of Your Mind" are Neil Diamond, Petula Clark, and Sting. Nicely, the version by Sting appears in the 1999 remake of "The Thomas Crown Affair".
8. Complete the line "And the _____ is like an ______ whirling silently in space".

Answer: world/apple

Noel Harrison recorded a mid-sixties song entitled "A Young Girl". Because of its bitter, grim tone, music fans at the time talked about it a great deal. However, they apparently were not inspired to buy it. Consequently, "A Young Girl" was not financially successful.
9. Which of the following would you most likely NOT be able to do in the cavern found in the hollow mentioned in this song?

Answer: read a lost love letter

"Down a hollow to a cavern/Where the sun has never shone". The option of reading would be unlikely in such a dark place.
10. Even more references to circular objects or motions appear in "The Windmills of Your Mind". Which set below contains words that do NOT come from the song?

Answer: pinwheel/cake

Many dizzying words make "The Windmills of Your Mind" a lilting, euphoric song. "Pinwheel" and "Cake", however, are not two of them. In early 2004 Rhino Handmade released a CD of Noel Harrison's music entitled "Life is a Dream". His recording of "A Young Girl" is not included since, a Noel puts it, "Wrong record company". The wonderful compilation includes Noel's versions of songs written by Donovan, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell and others. The liner notes are a delight to read. Noel's words are humble, heartfelt, and humorous. To end...
"Like a circle in a spiral,
Like a wheel within a wheel.
Never ending or beginning
On an ever-spinning reel.
As the images unwind
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind".
