A schoolteacher, Miriam E. Benjamin created the Gong and Signal Chair for hotels. Her ingenious system was a precursor to the flight attendant buttons on airplanes. She was born in 1861 and died in 1947, living through the Civil War and two World Wars.

Sarah Boone's new, improved design called for a narrow wooden board that was curved and offered more mobility and ease. It was especially useful when ironing women's garments and sleeves.

Answer: Elijah McCoy

Elijah McCoy eventually became a U.S. citizen and received more than 50 patents in his lifetime. He was also awarded patents for a fold-up ironing board and a water sprinkler. He died in Detroit in 1929. Various accounts of his inventions suggest that their reliability led to the popular laudatory phrase: "the Real McCoy".
