Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A movie was made about Lewis's life which starred Anthony Hopkins as Lewis. It was named:

Answer: Shadowlands

The other three are titles of some of Lewis's books. The movie also stars Debra Winger as Joy Davidman.
2. Lewis volunteered to fight in World War I, and was wounded in battle.

Answer: true

His best friend, Paddy Moore, was killed in the war. After the war, Lewis cared for Paddy's mother until her death.
3. Lewis was born in 1898 in which city?

Answer: Belfast

Ireland had not yet been partitioned into Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic.
4. Lewis was a student at Cambridge, and began his teaching profession there.

Answer: False

He was enrolled in University College, Oxford, entering there in 1917.
His first teaching position was also at University College, though he
taught at Magdalen College most of his academic life.

Late in his career, in 1954, he left Oxford for Magdalene College, Cambridge.

(The two colleges are spelled correctly, by the way -- Oxford left off the last "e", and Cambridge included it.)
5. This author was one of Lewis's best friends, and helped lead him from atheism to Christianity.

Answer: JRR Tolkien

Ransom is a character in the "Space Trilogy" books.
Donne, an Elizabethan poet, is several centuries too old to have met Lewis.
Lewis did hold McDonald's writing in high esteem, but never met him (except in his fictional work, "The Great Divorce").
6. Lewis liked to gather in a pub with several friends and fellow writers. This group became known as _____ .

Answer: The Inklings

The Koalbitar was the name Tolkien gave to a similar circle of friends who would meet around the fire (close enough to bite the coals -- hence the name).
The Inklings included Lewis, Tolkien, Charles Williams, Lewis' brother Warren, Owen Barfield, and Hugo Dyson. Others, including W.H. Auden and Dorothy Sayers, also sometimes attended their meetings, at which their works in progress would be read and criticised.
7. C. S. Lewis was knighted for his work in popularizing Christianity.

Answer: False

Unlike Keith Richards or Paul McCartney, Lewis was not knighted.
8. C. S. Lewis wrote the entries for "allegory" and "miracle" for the Oxford English Dictionary

Answer: False

He did write several scholarly works, including a preface to Milton's "Paradise Lost", "The Allegory of Love", and "The Discarded Image", but doesn't appear to have contributed to the OED.
9. Lewis married an American woman named...?

Answer: Joy Davidman Gresham

His grieving after her death from cancer is recorded in "A Grief Observed".
10. Which of these titles is NOT autobiographical?

Answer: Miracles

"All My Road Before Me" is a diary Lewis wrote in his college years. It was published after his death. "Surprised by Joy" gives his account of his youth and conversion to Christianity. "A Grief Observed" is his account of dealing with the grief following the death of his wife.
