Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Aesop is only known for the genre of fables.

Answer: True

Although all the biographical information we now have about Aesop was written long after his death, the only literary ascribed to him is the fable. It is also important to say that the fables that go under his name may not be authored by him. The compilations that we know today include fables and tales by authors that lived before him.
2. It is difficult to find out where Aesop was born. According to some modern writers, what is Aesop's origin?

Answer: African

Although it is not certain, some writers believe that Aesop was of African origin. Richard Lobban has argued that his name is likely derived from "Aethiopian" and he also says that the animals present in his fables are common on the African continent.

But many places also claim his origin and so, according to the researchers and what is said in some valuable sources, Aesop had an African origin.
3. Aesop is thought to have lived as a slave on which Greek island?

Answer: Samos

His life is still obscure and researchers say that he lived as a slave on Samos around 550 B.C. An ancient account of his life is found in "The Book of Xanthus the Philosopher and His Slave Aesop".
4. Why did Aesop gain liberty from his master?

Answer: Because he was capable of learning and wit

In fact, it was a reward given to him by his master Jadmon.
5. What is thought to be the most probable (approximate) year of Aesop's birth?

Answer: 620 B.C.

By almost universal consent, it is agreed that Aesop was born around 620 B.C. and that he was born a slave. That is also unclear but, in fact, researchers and sources point that the year suggested is the approximate date of his birth.
6. Who invited Aesop to take up residence at Sardis?

Answer: Croesus

At that time, Croesus was the king of Lydia, and when Aesop met some men at his court, he pleased them with his fables and conversation. This was one good motive to have him in Sardis, as he was a wise man.
7. Aesop was given some ambassadorial missions. What happened to him in one of them?

Answer: He met his death

When in Delphi, he tried to distribute the money he got from Croesus among the citizens, but he couldn't because of people's behaviour and sent the money back to the king. He was accused of 'impiety' and executed in public as a criminal.
8. What does "The blood of Aesop" mean?

Answer: Deeds of wrongdoing never go unpunished

In fact, that phrase became popular soon after his execution in Delphi. He was not guilty of anything but was killed by the citizens. So, the people of Delphi were visited with many calamities and had to make public reparation for their crime.
9. Where was a statue of Aesop erected to his memory?

Answer: Athens

This is also immortalized by Phaedrus in one of his works dedicated to Aesop.
10. Aesop was not employed in various affairs of state.

Answer: False

He worked for the monarch of Lydia, Croesus, and was involved in several missions in different cities.
