Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Betty Draper on the TV show "Mad Men"

Answer: January Jones

January Jones played fictional character Betty Draper. Betty was the wife of Don Draper on the TV series "Mad Men" which ran from 2007 to 2015. The TV show was set in the 1960s, before 'women's lib', when June Cleaver and Margaret Anderson were representatives of the perfect women, before Laura Petrie came along in her capri pants. Betty lived with ad man Don and their two children in suburban Ossining, New York.

Her character has been described as "cold, remote and emotionally unavailable". Actress January Jones is an actress and a model, and has appeared in films including "Anger Management", "American Wedding" and "X-Men: First Class".
2. "Girl next door" movie actress appeared in "The Glenn Miller Story"

Answer: June Allyson

In "The Glenn Miller Story" (1953), June Allyson (1917-2006) plays Helen Burger who eventually marries bandleader Glen Miller (played by James Stewart). She had already teamed up with James Stewart in 1949 to play the wife of Monty Stratton, a Major League Baseball pitcher who loses a leg in a hunting accident.

A third pairing of Allyson and Stewart occurred in 1955 in the movie "Strategic Air Command". June also appeared with Van Johnson in six films. After a long and storied career, she "lived life to the fullest" in Depends commercials beginning in 1988.
3. Was a Crown Prince of Sweden

Answer: Charles August

Charles August (1768-1810) was a Danish prince (not like Hamlet) who served as Crown Prince of Sweden in 1810, shortly before he died from a stroke. Before assuming the title, his full name was Christian August of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenborg. Whew! Let's just call him Charles. Anyway, Charles had been a general in the Danish army, and was also Danish Governor-general of Norway.

He certainly knew his way around Scandinavia! How he got from Denmark to Sweden (besides by ship) was because he was adopted by King Charles XIII who was childless and needed an heir to the throne.
4. Oscar winning best actor for "The Best Years of Our Lives"

Answer: Fredric March

I will always remember Fredric March (1897-1975) as Willy Loman, the down-trodden, exhausted seller (of what we were never told) in "Death of a Salesman", the 1951 movie based on Arthur Miller's iconic play. However, he may be more famous for his role as the bank executive trying to help veterans in the 1946 post-war drama, "The Best Years of Our Lives".

He won a Best Actor Oscar, an award he had previously won for his performance in "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" (1931). March also distinguished himself as Matthew Harrison Brady in 1960's "Inherit the Wind", and in "Seven Days in May" (1964).
5. Wrote "Little Women"

Answer: Louisa May Alcott

"Little Women" was a novel written by Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888) and originally published in two volumes in 1868 and 1869. It is a coming-of-age story of the March sisters, i.e., Amy, Jo, Meg and Beth. The story begins at Christmas time as the sisters (and their mother) must face the holiday alone.

They are forced to relocate to a less expensive neighborhood after their father loses their money. Their trials and tribulations, loves and losses are detailed in the novel. Alcott wrote two sequels called "Little Men" and "Jo's Boys".
6. Lead guitarist of the rock band Queen

Answer: Brian May

When is a renowned British musician also an astrophysicist (really)?
The answer is Brian May! Not only is he the lead guitarist and co-founder of the rock band Queen, he also received a PhD in astrophysics from Imperial College London in 2007. He was a 'science team collaborator' with NASA's New Horizon Pluto mission. Talk about a renaissance dude! Additionally, he built his own electric guitar called "The Red Special", while writing compositions for the band which include "We Will Rock You", "I Want It All" and "The Show Must Go On".
7. Major League Baseball retired first baseman and designated hitter

Answer: Lee May

Retired American Major League baseball played Lee May played professional baseball for 18 seasons. He began his career with the Cincinnati Reds on September 1, 1965, and ended with the Kansas City Royals in 1982. He was given the nickname "The Big Bopper" (with apologies to J.P. Richardson) because he hit 20 or more home runs, with 80 or more RBIs (runs batted in) in 11 consecutive seasons.

He was a three time All-Star in 1969, 1971 and 1972. After retiring as a player, May came back as a hitting coach for the Royals, and earned a World Series ring as part of their 1985 championship team.
8. Voice actress whose father was a famous ventriloquist

Answer: April Winchell

You may not recognize her face, but April Winchell has voiced hundreds of animated television programs. Among these programs are: "Wander Over Yonder" as Sylvia, "Goof Troop" as Peg Pete, "Recess" as Mrs. Finster and "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse" as Clarabell Cow, to name just a few.

She has voiced roles in the films "Antz", "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" and "Monster's University", and has been a radio talk show host. If you are old enough, you may remember her father, the great ventriloquist Paul Winchell with his dummy Jerry Mahoney.
9. Swedish playwright, novelist and painter

Answer: August Strindberg

The very versatile August Strindberg (1849-1912) wrote plays, novels, poems and essays, in addition to being an accomplished artist. His writings were often reflections of his own personal life and include the plays "Miss Julie" (1888) and "The Ghost Sonata" (1908). Among his artistic works are "The Town", an oil painting Strindberg created in 1903, along with the beautiful "Sunset over the Sea" that same year.

He is considered by some to be "Sweden's greatest dramatist". One of his famous statements, somewhat Cartesian in nature, is "I dream, therefore I exist".
10. Lassie's ' mother and the 'original' Mrs. Robinson

Answer: June Lockhart

June Lockhart, daughter of actor Gene Lockhart, was born in New York City in 1925. Her popularity was at its peak in the 1950s and 1960s on TV, in films and on the stage. But she is best known as the mother on two hit television shows. June played Ruth Martin, mother of Timmy Martin on "Lassie", from 1958 to 1964. Between 1965 and 1968, she was "Lost in Space" as Maureen Robinson, wife of Professor John Robinson and mother of Judy, Penny and Will ("Danger, Will Robinson").

She also appeared in such films as "Sergeant York" (1941) and "The Yearling" (1946).
