Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I came up with the laws of planetary motion.

Answer: Johannes Kepler

Johannes Kepler (1571-1630) was a German mathematician and astronomer. He confirmed the theory of heliocentricity, and that orbits were elliptical. Influenced by Brahe and Copernicus, Kepler wrote "Astronomia nova", "Harmonices Mundi" and "Epitome of Copernican Astronomy", which predated and provided a base for Newton's theory of universal gravitation.
2. I was a pioneer in microbiology and helped improve the microscope.

Answer: Antonie van Leeuwenhoek

Dutch scientist Antonie van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723) became known as the "Father of Microbiology". Van Leeuwenhoek handcrafted microscopes which allowed him to observe and describe microorganisms. He was the first to describe single-celled organisms, which he called "animalcules" (Latin for tiny animals).
3. I was the creator of the Periodic Table of Elements.

Answer: Dmitri Mendeleev

Dmitri Mendeleev (1834-1907) was a Russian chemist who devised the 'Periodic Law', and arranged the elements by their atomic numbers. He developed the Periodic Table of Elements which not only adjusted the properties of elements already discovered, but was able to predict the characteristics of chemical elements yet to be found.
4. Under a spreading apple tree, an apple led me to theorize on the laws of motion.

Answer: Isaac Newton

Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727) was, perhaps, one of the greatest scientists of all time. Born in the United Kingdom, Newton was a mathematician and physicist who was a major figure in the scientific revolution. He delved into the nature of light and color, and how gravity works. Newton's book "Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy", published in 1687, devised the three laws of motion and the principle of universal gravitation.
5. I was the first to find the connection between electricity and magnetism.

Answer: Hans Christian Oersted

Hans Christian Oersted (1777-1851) was a Danish physicist who discovered electromagnetism, i.e., the connection between electricity and magnetism. Oersted's Law states that "when a steady electric current passes through a wire, it creates a magnetic field around it". A unit of magnetic field strength is known as an oersted (oe).
6. I was the physicist who first proposed quantum theory.

Answer: Max Planck

German theoretical physicist Max Planck (1858-1947) suggested that energy is not radiated continuously but in "bundles" called quanta. His discovery of 'energy quanta' earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1918. Planck's discoveries changed our understanding of atomic and subatomic processes.
7. Serendipitously, I was the one who gave the world X-rays.

Answer: Wilhelm Roentgen

German-Dutch physicist Wilhelm Roentgen (1845-1923) noticed that a piece of cardboard covered with crystals of barium platinocyanide glowed when a vacuum tube was switched on. Since he did not know the name of these electromagnetic emissions, he called them "X-rays". His discovery earned him the very first Nobel Prize for Physics, awarded in 1901.
8. I was a Nobel Prize winner who worked with statistical mechanics, thermodynamics and cats (or did I?).

Answer: Erwin Schrodinger

Austrian physicist Erwin Schrodinger (1887-1961) delved into philosophical aspects of science. Schrodinger worked in the field of quantum theory, and was responsible for "the wave equation". He proposed the "thought experiment" called "Schrodinger's cat", a paradox he created in 1935, which attempts to explain whether an event will occur or not.
9. I was responsible for designing the alternating current electricity supply system.

Answer: Nikola Tesla

Nikola Tesla (1856-1943) was born in Croatia which was, at that time, part of the Austrian Empire. He was an inventor, electrical engineer and physicist. Tesla came to the United States in 1884, where he developed electrical and mechanical devices. Among these devices was "an alternating current (AC) induction motor".

He was also able to create a wireless-controlled boat, way ahead of his time.
10. I proposed the theory of "continental drift".

Answer: Alfred Wegener

Alfred Wegener (1880-1930) was a German astronomer and meteorologist, and a trailblazer in the field of polar research. He hypothesized that, at one time, the continents were one continuous land mass, i.e., a 'supercontinent' or "Urkontinent", until "continental drift" occurred. He also postulated an early theory regarding plate tectonics.
