Question 1 of 10
1. The name 'volcanologist,' also called a 'vulcanologist,' is pretty self-explanatory. They are people who study volcanoes, but they have quite a few obstacles to face. First, they must endure a difficult climb to the top of a volcano. Of course, there's also the magma, sulfuric gas, ash, debris, and rocks to worry about too. Speaking of volcanic rocks, which of these terms best describes them? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. Golf ball diving is a seemingly easy job. All you have to do is be able to use scuba equipment, right? There's no danger in collecting golf balls from the bottom of artificial ponds and streams, right? If you think either of statements is true, think again. Branches, twigs, and other debris may cause injury to divers. The darkness of the water makes it difficult to see important gauges on a diver's suit. Tell me, how many different things do gauges tell a diver? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. Ostrich farming doesn't sound dangerous at all. But don't be fooled by these birds' calm presence. The ostrich is one of the world's most dangerous birds. They kill more people in a year than sharks do. And yet, ostriches aren't the most dangerous of all birds to humans. Can you tell me which bird causes the highest fatality rate in humans? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. Video game tester may sound fun, and I'll admit that it's not exactly 'dirty,' but think of the job this way: You have to play the same level over and over again for so and so many hours, looking at the same background, listening to the same music, and doing whatever else you need to be doing on the game you're playing, searching for even the slightest bug or glitch, whilst there's not even a guarantee you'll enjoy the game. But, I suppose if that's the kind of thing you're into, then it could be pretty fun. While we're talking about video games, which video game was the first to showcase Mario, the most famous video game character of all?

Answer: (Two Words)
Question 5 of 10
5. Nearly everyone knows what a chimney sweep does. The movie 'Mary Poppins' almost makes it sound fun. But, personally, I think that having to serve a two-year apprenticeship just to be able to walk on people's rooftops and get all full of soot whilst sticking a brush up a hole is hardly 'fun'. And, for those of you who are afraid of heights, it could sometimes be scary. What's the fear of heights called, anyways? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. At first, the only danger you may see for an airplane pilot is the fact that a plane could crash at any time. But that's not very likely. But there are so many germs in airplanes, it's easy to get sick after you get to your destination. Air pressure, radiation, and other factors propose even more risks. And if you're a passenger, the cramped seats pose another health danger. Which of these is it? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. Although there are so many shows on television describing how dangerous logging is that it's hardly a 'seemingly easy' job, leaving this job out of this quiz would be like forgetting the Titanic in a quiz about history's worst shipwrecks (or greatest movies). Now, how should I make this job sound worse than it really is? Ah, I know! How about the fact that some loggers have to perform their jobs 100 feet in the air? And perhaps it would be a good idea to include the high winds employees may experience up there? Even handling a chainsaw is dangerous. Which of these chainsaw safety devices is designed for making the blade stop automatically? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. Though the dangers of truck driving may have been showcased in History Channel's show 'Ice Road Truckers,' regular everyday truckers face dangers as well. The major death-causing occurrence would have to be collisions. You may be thinking, 'If accidents are all I have to worry about, what's so bad about truck driving?' Well, when you consider the size of the vehicles, the frequency of collisions, and the fatigue some truck drivers may face, it becomes a big deal. And considering some of the things the drivers may be hauling, the situation could be worse. For example, if you're hauling some animals around, there's also that smell you have to worry about... Tell me, which one of these animals looks like and smells like a skunk, only a lot worse? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Mountain rescuing is one job that could be classified under both the 'difficult' and 'dangerous' categories. A few dangers of this occupation are high winds, unstable ground, avalanches, rocky terrain, thin oxygen, and a wide range of temperatures. Many of these dangers have been factors in making one mountain the most deadly in the first 50 years after man successfully ascended his first peak of over 8,000 metres in 1950. Which mountain was this? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. Sewer inspection is one of the dirtiest jobs of all. To give a glimpse of what they do, I'll start with the easier way to do it. The 'easy way out' is to put a video camera in the sewer line and see if it's clogged, with tree roots and other debris, or 'clean' (as if that's possible.) The other, more challenging way to do it is to crawl through the sewer line. Think about how disgusting that would be, having to walk around in... then again, maybe you shouldn't. And as if all the waste wasn't bad enough, there's mice, cockroaches, and dead goldfish... oh my! Which of these goldfish-related facts is true? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: Igneous

Volcanic rock is divided into several groups. Basalt rocks are rocks that contain low amounts of silica, whereas rhyolite rocks are the opposite, and have high silica content. Rocks 'in the middle' include andesite, latite, dacite, and trachyte.

Answer: Three

Those three things are depth, air consumption, and time. Golf ball retrieval is a very profitable business. With each ball collected being worth about nine cents, and up to 6,000 balls being collected each day, a golf ball diver makes up to $100,000 dollars a year!

Answer: Cassowary

Cassowaries are endangered Australian birds with sharp beaks, sharp talons, and strong legs. If you get kicked by a cassowary, in the leg for example, a couple of things will happen. One, their claws will pierce your leg, and two, your leg will most likely be broken. Cassowaries are also the third-largest birds in the world, after ostriches and emus.

The last death caused by a Cassowary was in 1926.

Answer: Donkey Kong

In this video game, originally released in 1981, Mario has to jump over barrels and other items, thrown by (who else?) Donkey Kong. In addition, he would have to climb up ladders, dodge flames, and collect items like umbrellas and telephones, while trying to reach the top of a complex series of platforms where Princess Peach, also known as Princess Toadstool, would be held prisoner.

Video game testing, although not quite as profitable as some of the other jobs mentioned in this quiz, makes a salary of up to $20,000 dollars a year... I imagine some of that would be used for eyesight related expenses.

Answer: Altophobia

Agliophobia is the fear of pain. Achluphobia, the fear of darkness, and acerophobia is the strange fear of sourness. There are several other phobias that concern the fear of heights, including acrophobia, batophobia, hypsiphobia, and hyposophobia. Source: www.phobialist.com

Unlike the other jobs in this quiz, a chimney sweep doesn't make a lot of money. Their salary is only about $12,000 dollars a year.

Answer: DVT

DVT, which stands for deep vein thrombosis, is simply when you get a blood clot in a deep vein. And there are other health dangers, for example, your lungs, which expand on an airplane, may cause chest pain to those with asthma and smokers. People with heart problems or high blood pressure are at a greater risk of a stroke or a heart attack on a plane, because of the greater amounts of stress. Tuberculosis is most commonly caught on an airplane. And the list continues on.

Depending on what kind of pilot you are, your salary can really vary. There are so many factors that can change your salary, including what kind of airplane you fly and how much you work.

Answer: Chain Brake

The chain brake stops the chain if kickback occurs. The hand guard keeps the hand steady. The throttle interlock keeps the speed of a chainsaw from accidentally changing. Finally, anti-kickback does exactly what the name suggests: reduces the amount of kickback. Source: www.nasdonline.org Please note that I can't guarantee that these devices will prevent you from getting injured. I also cannot guarantee that these devices are included in every chainsaw.

Loggers make an average of about $32,000 dollars a year. But, personally, I think I'd rather stare at the same screen, hitting the same buttons over and over again for eight hours as a video game tester and make around ten thousand dollars less than possibly kill or severely injure myself doing the second-most deadly job of 2007.

Answer: Zorilla

Believe it or not, all of these animals actually exist. A zopilote is a type of vulture, the zeren is an antelope, and a zebu is a type of ox. The zorilla, a nocturnal animal that lives in Africa, has black and white stripes, just like a skunk. It's about the same size, too. One major difference is, of course, their smell. Zorillas are considered to be the worst-smelling animal in the world. But, although skunks aren't considered the worst-smelling, I still wouldn't want to bump into one.

According to www.e-z.net: "About 55% of all class 8 (semis) driver fatalities occur in rollover accidents. Another 10% occur in fuel oil fires." They also write, "Trucking is a very dangerous profession, about 600 drivers a year die in highway accidents." And, although this may not be very 'life-threatening', truck driving can cost you over $1,000 dollars a year just to use it. And that's not even including the amount of money gas costs nowadays. Truck driving can earn you anywhere from about $16,000 to $55,000 dollars a year.

Answer: Annapurna

Perhaps you were fooled by Mount Everest's height, or even K2's reputation of being one of the most deadly mountains in the world. However, K2 is only the fourth most deadly (based on percentage of deaths per successful ascent), and Mount Everest is seventh.

In fact, the Matterhorn (Swiss Alps) is more deadly than Mt. Everest, and Siula Grande (Peruvian Andies) is more deadly than K2! Annapurna, the first 8000+ metre peak to be successfully ascended, is the most deadly mountain in the world, according to a report published in the January 2007 issue of German mountaineering magazine, "Panorama", with a ratio of deaths to successful ascents of 41%! Nanga Parbat is the second most deadly peak in the world. 10. Sewer inspection is one of the dirtiest jobs of all. To give a glimpse of what they do, I'll start with the easier way to do it. And as if all the waste wasn't bad enough, there's mice, cockroaches, and dead goldfish... oh my! Which of these goldfish-related facts is true?

Answer: They can only defecate

The salary of a sewer inspector is variable. Usually, it earns you about $35,000 dollars. Not bad pay for walking in 'you-know-what.'

Many thanks for playing this quiz, and I hope you've learned something about some of these jobs. Hopefully, if you do happen to have one of these occupations, you're not totally mortified the next time you go to work.
