Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On what date was John Dillinger born?

Answer: June 22, 1903

He was born in Indianapolis. Other famous people born on June 22 are Meryl Streep, Freddie Prinze, Cyndi Lauper, Kris Kristofferson and Kurt Warner.
2. Dillinger's reputation was that of a bank robber, rather than a murderer. How many bank robberies did he commit?

Answer: 24

However, from September 1933 until July 1934, he and his gang terrorized the Midwest, killing ten men, wounding seven others, robbing banks and police arsenals, and staging three jail breaks-killing a sheriff during one and wounding two guards in another. He was a busy fellow.
3. How many homicides was John Dillinger charged with over his infamous career?

Answer: 1

Despite his infamy, Dillinger was only ever charged with one homicide. During a shootout, a police officer fired upon him hitting him in his bullet-proof vest. This prompted him to return fire, killing the officer. He was never convicted for this crime.
4. When Dillinger was shot and killed by special agents, what had he been doing just prior to his demise?

Answer: Watching a film at a theatre

He was out with his girlfriend of about a month, who had informed the FBI that they would be going to the movie. Upon their exit, he was chased into an alley and gunned down by agents. They said he pulled a gun and it was deemed a justifiable homicide.
5. Dillinger enlisted in the United States Navy in 1922, where he was a Petty Officer 3rd Class Machinery Repairman. On what type of ship did he serve?

He was assigned to the USS Utah, but deserted shortly after when it was docked in Boston. He was eventually dishonorably discharged.
6. Dillinger escaped from a Crown Point, Indiana jail on March 3, 1934. How?

Answer: Carved a fake gun from a potato

What happened on the day of Dillinger's escape is still open to debate. Deputy Ernest Blunk claimed that Dillinger had escaped using a real pistol, but FBI files make it clear that Dillinger carved a fake pistol from a potato.
7. Dillinger's first robbery in 1924 netted him $50. He robbed a grocery store with a pal, Ed Singleton and they were quickly apprehended. How long a sentence did Dillinger receive?

Answer: 20 years

Singleton pleaded not guilty, stood trial, and was sentenced to two years in prison. Dillinger, following his father's advice, confessed, was convicted of assault and battery with intent to rob and conspiracy to commit a felony, and received joint sentences of two to 14 years and 10 to 20 years in the Indiana State Prison. Stunned by the harsh sentence, Dillinger became a tortured, bitter man in prison.

He was paroled after 8½ years, and began robbing banks almost immediately.
