John Lennon was returning home from a recording session with his wife, Yoko Ono, during the late hours of December 8th, 1980. The assassin, Mark David Chapman, shot Lennon four times in the back, later surrendering to police. Lennon was rushed to the hospital, but was dead on arrival. He was only forty years old.

Answer: First openly gay man elected to public office in California

Harvey Milk served on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1978. As a gay man, he was an advocate for gay rights in California. He was strongly opposed by city supervisor Dan White, who, on November 27th, 1978, assassinated Milk and Mayor Moscone. Milk remains one of the most influential LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) figures in American history.

(The gun Marvin Gaye Sr. used to kill his son was given to him by the latter for Christmas to protect against intruders).
