Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which prophet had a book named after him, and was the last of the ruling judges?

Answer: Samuel

Samuel was the son of Elkanah and Hannah, and the primary leader of the Israelites during a period when they were dominated by the Philistines. He was also responsible for anointing Saul as the first king of Israel, and later, also anointed David.
2. With a name meaning 'ornament', what was the given name of both Lamech's and Esau's wife?

Answer: Adah

Adah was one of two wives that Lamech, the first-named polygamist in the Bible, too. The other was Zillah. Adah bore a son called Jabal, noted as the 'father of those that dwell in tents and have cattle' (Genesis 4:20). The other Ahad (wife of Esau) became the mother of Eliphaz, Esau's first-born son.

She was an ancestress of the Edomites, who worshipped fertility gods and regularly attacked Israel.
3. Not quite who he was expecting, who was the first woman Jacob married?

Answer: Leah

Rachel and Leah were both daughters of Laban, and Jacob was smitten with Rachel. Laban agrees to let Jacob work for Rachel's hand in marriage, but one their wedding day, Laban tricks Jacob into taking Leah as his wife, as she is the elder child. You'll remember that Jacob and his mother performed a similar switch on Jacob's father when Jacob took the blessing of the elder son from Esau. Jacob still hasn't learned his lesson though; he later perpetuates the favouritism of raising one child above another amongst his own sons.
4. Most likely of Persian origin, what was the name of the first wife of King Ahasuerus of Persia?

Answer: Vashti

The name 'Vashti' means 'beautiful woman'. She was a kind woman, who looked after her household, and ensured they were fed. Vashti the queen was beautiful and virtuous; she was divorced by Ahasuerus her husband for refusing to appear unveiled before his feasting and debauched company. The king took away her lands and refused to see her anymore, and replaced her with Esther.
5. Which minor prophet authored one of the oldest prophetic books of the Old Testament, speaking against greed, corruption and oppression of the poor?

Answer: Amos

Amos was a son of Manasseh and the father of Josiah, an ancestor of Jesus and was a herdsman and gatherer of sycamore fruit. The book of Amos records the warnings to both Israel and surrounding Gentile nations of soon and severe divine judgment because of their sin, but finishes with a prediction of Israel's eventual restoration.
6. What was the name of the father of Abraham?

Answer: Terah

Terah was the son of Nahor, a descendant of Shem, who was in turn a son a Noah. He was a sculptor, a maker of idols and worshipper of many gods, which was not unusual for people living in Ur at the time (Joshua 24:2). In obedience to the call of God (Genesis 12), the family removes from Ur, and while Abraham continues his journey to Canaan, Terah stops at Haran. Terah had three sons, Abraham, Nahor (from whose family both Isaac and Jacob had their wives); and Haran, who died before his father. Haran was the father of Lot.
7. A man of which of the names below was one of the twelve sons of Jacob and Leah, and the founder of one of the twelve tribes of Israel?

Answer: Issachar

Issachar was reputed to be a patient man, a worker in agriculture, and of peaceful disposition. He was the leader of one of the Eastern tribes of Israel. After Joshua led the people of Israel into the Promised Land, the tribe of Issachar settled on land lying west of the Jordan River.

This territory included the Valley of Jezreel, and the fortified city of Megiddo. While west of the Jordan, there were three other tribes (Asher, Zebulun and Manasseh) all of whose lands were further west.
8. Which nephew of Caleb became the first of the ruling judges of the Israelites?

Answer: Othniel

After the Israelites had been in bondage in Mesopotamia for eight years, they cried out to God for help (Judges 3:9). God raised up Othniel as a judge, deliverer and peace-maker. Othniel was a leader in Israel for around 40 years from around 1350 B.C, the first of the 12 judges listed in the book of Judges.
9. Whose vineyard was coveted by Ahab so greatly that Ahab's wife, Jezebel, killed him for it?

Answer: Naboth

Found in the book of 1 Kings, the story of Ahab tells of the ultimate demise of wicked king Ahab of Israel and his infamous wife, Jezebel that comes about because of their mistreatment of Naboth. Ahab really wants Naboth's vineyard, so his wife kindly arranges for Naboth to be stoned to death on trumped up charges.

The prophet Elijah pronounced judgement on Ahab and his wife, and the males in Ahab's household; death, and their bodies to be eaten by wild animals, and queen Jezebel to be consumed by dogs. When Ahab heard this, he repented and humbled himself before God, and God delayed the sentence until some years later. Ultimately, though, God carried out his promised punishment to avenge Naboth's death.
10. The prophet Hosea, has a name that means what, a message of hope?

Answer: Salvation

The prophet Hosea, proclaimed in the Talmud as the greatest prophet, had a ministry which followed on that of Amos. He was one of the Minor Prophets, prophesying to the Northern Kingdom of Israel. Hosea's name, which means 'salvation', is probably a reference to the position Hosea held in Israel; bringing a message of hope for those who would return to God in repentance. Through the messages in the book of Hosea, the theme of judgement of sin and return to God as his children after repentance is made clear - Biblical salvation explained in a nutshell!
