Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to John 13:26, what was the name of Judas Iscariot's father?

Answer: Simon

Judas Iscariot's father was Simon, as per John 13:26. The verse tells of Jesus dining with His disciples just prior to His arrest and crucifixion. During the meal, known as the Last Supper, Jesus accurately predicted one of the Twelve would betray Him with all the disciples denying they would do such a despicable thing. Verse 26, in the NKJV, states: "Jesus answered, 'It is he to whom I shall give a piece of bread when I have dipped it.' And having dipped the bread, He gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon."

Simon is also named as the father of Judas in John 13:2 and 14:4. However, little is known about Simon as he is mentioned in passing reference. Apart from the Gospel of John, there is no mention of Judas Iscariot's father in the entire Christian Bible.
2. All four Gospels identify Judas as a traitor. However, what Gospel also calls him a thief?

Answer: John

In John 10:26, Judas is called a thief. The verse is also part of a passage which states Judas put on false fronts, pretending, for example, he was concerned about the plight of the poor.

Using the NKJV, the name Judas appears no less than eight times in the Gospel of John, more than any other book in the Christian Bible. In other words, more details are provided about Judas in John than in the three other Gospels.
3. According to Matthew 26:14 and Mark 14:10, did Judas go to the chief priests, or did the chief priest go to Judas to betray Jesus?

Answer: Judas went to the chief priests

According to Matthew 26:14 and Mark 14:10, Judas went to the chief priests with an offer to betray Jesus. Mark 14:10-11, in the NKJV, states: "Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Him to them. And when they heard it, they were glad, and promised to give him money. So he sought how he might conveniently betray Him."
4. The betrayal of Jesus by Judas is told in all four Gospels.

Answer: True

True. The betrayal of Jesus by Judas is told in all four Gospels. Details are found in Matthew 26, Mark 14, Luke 22 and John 18. All four Gospels go on to tell of the arrest of Jesus, His crucifixion and His resurrection three days later.
5. In what community did Judas express indignation about Mary, the sister of Lazarus and Martha, using expensive perfume to anoint the feet of Jesus? (John 12:1)

Answer: Bethany

The incident in which Judas expressed indignation about Mary using expensive perfume to anoint the feet of Jesus took place in Bethany. Details about the anointing of Christ's feet can be found in John 12:1-8.

According to the passage, Mary took "a pound of very costly oil of spikenard" and anointed the feet of Jesus before wiping His feet with her hair.

In Verse 5, Judas expressed his opposition to such action, stating the costly oil should've been sold and the proceeds given to the poor. The passage states Judas was putting on a false front as only cared about himself and had no feelings of empathy for the poor.

In Verse 7 and 8, Jesus is quoted as telling Judas: "Let her {Mary} alone; she has kept this for the day of My burial. For the poor you have with you always, but Me you do not have always."
6. According to John 13:29, what special task did Judas do for Christ's ministry?

Answer: Took care of the finances

Judas took care of the finances for Christ's ministry. John 13:29 in the NKJV states he took care of the "money box" while the same verse in the NIV states Judas "had charge of the money."

I personally find it unusual Judas was selected for such a job. Taking care of the finances, you'd think, would've been an ideal job for Matthew, also known as Levi, as he was a former tax collector. However, there's a distinct possibility when Matthew became a follower of Christ he didn't want anything to do with his old way of life and as a result Judas was selected to take care of the finances.
7. According to Matthew 26:15, how many pieces of silver did Judas receive for betraying Jesus?

Answer: 30

Judas agreed to betray Jesus for thirty pieces of silver. Matthew 26:14-16 tells of Judas visiting the high priests and asking them how much money they would pay him if he delivered Jesus into their hands. The chief priests responded to his request by counting out thirty pieces of silver. The passage concludes by stating, "So from that time he sought opportunity to betray Him."
8. What was the sign Judas gave to those who were sent to arrest Jesus?

Answer: He kissed Jesus on the cheek

As a sign to the soldiers sent to arrest Jesus, Judas kissed Jesus on the cheek. It has to be the most notorious kiss in history. In fact, the kiss most likely resulted in the term 'kiss of death', according to Wikipedia.

Matthew 26:47-49, in the NKJV, states: "And while He was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, with a great multitude with swords and clubs, came from the chief priests and elders of the people. Now His betrayer had given them a sign, saying, 'Whomever I kiss, He is the One; seize Him.' Immediately he went up to Jesus and said, 'Greetings, Rabbi!' and kissed Him."
9. According to Matthew 27:5, how did Judas Iscariot die?

Answer: He committed suicide

Matthew 27:3-5 tells of Judas being overcome with remorse and committing suicide by hanging himself. In Verse 4, in the NKJV, Judas is quoted as stating, "I have sinned by betraying innocent blood."

Acts 1:26 tells of Matthias being selected to become a member of the Twelve Disciples, replacing Judas.
10. Whenever there is a list of names of the Twelve Disciples in the New Testament, in what position does Judas Iscariot's name appear?

Answer: His name is always last

Judas Iscariot's name is always last when a list of the Twelve Disciples appears in the New Testament. Lists of names of the Twelve Disciples appear in Matthew 10:2-4, Mark 3:16-19 and Luke 6:14-16. In addition to Judas Iscariot's name appearing last on the three lists, reference is made to the fact he betrayed Christ.
