Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When the Israelites in Egypt became too numerous, the pharaoh ordered that all boys born must be thrown into the Nile. Moses was set adrift in a reed basket and adopted by the pharaoh's daughter. He was raised as an Egyptian but he led the Israelites out of Egypt and through the desert. What tribe did Moses belong to?

Answer: Levi

The tribe of Joseph was made into two half-tribes by Joseph's father, Israel. These tribes, Ephraim and Manasseh, were descended from Joseph's sons. Moses was from the tribe of Levi (Exodus 2: 1-8), not from one of the tribes of Joseph who saved the family of Israel from famine in Canaan. Aaron, his brother, became the first high priest and the tribe of Levi became the priests of the Lord.
2. Joshua was mentioned often with Moses in Exodus and Numbers. By God's instruction he was commissioned as Moses's successor in Numbers, chapter 27. Joshua became the leader of the Israelites as they crossed the Jordan River into Canaan. What tribe did Joshua belong to?

Answer: Ephraim

Joshua, son of Nun, was from the tribe of Ephraim (Numbers 13:3-16). Joshua was one of the twelve spies who went into the land of Canaan. As leader of Israel after Moses he led the march around the city of Jericho. On the seventh day they marched around the city seven times, blew their trumpets, and the walls came down.
3. Caleb was also one of the twelve spies Moses sent into Canaan. What tribe did Caleb come from?

Answer: Judah

Caleb was one of only two adults who left Egypt and entered Canaan. Israel listened to the 10 spies who reported that Canaan could not be conquered, not to Joshua and Caleb, who said Canaan could be conquered. All the adult Israelites, except Caleb and Joshua, died during the 40 years wandering the desert. Caleb's tribe is identified in Numbers 13:6.
4. Ehud, a left-handed man, killed the king of Moab who had been oppressing Israel for 18 years. He stabbed the king on his throne with a sword drawn from his right thigh. Ehud became the first judge of Israel. What tribe was he?

Answer: Benjamin

This fact is in Judges 3:15. The king was so fat that the hilt of the sword was buried in the folds of fat. The Benjaminites are often mentioned as left-handed warriors in the Bible.
5. Gideon became a judge of Israel when the Midianites were oppressing Israel. He prepared a meal for the angel of God, who consumed the meal with fire. Then Gideon tested the Lord with a wool fleece placed out for the morning dew, asking first for a dry fleece with a wet ground, and then a wet fleece with the ground dry all around. What tribe was Gideon?

Answer: Manasseh

(Judges 6:15) Gideon was also told to select which troops would be taken into battle by watching them drink at a stream. He took the troops who lifted water to their mouths cupped in their hands. Gideon led Israel 40 years. He had 70 sons, 69 of whom were killed by his concubine's son. One escaped, Jotham.
6. Samson was a judge of Israel set apart by God from his birth. His birth was foretold to his parents and he was raised as a Nazirite, abstaining from wine and fermented drink. He was never to cut his hair. What tribe did Samson come from?

Answer: Dan

(Judges 16:15-30) The woman Delilah cut his hair and betrayed him to the Philistines. Blinded, he destroyed a temple, filled with Philistines and their rulers, by pushing over the central pillars.
7. Samuel was the last judge of Israel. His mother, Hannah, prayed for a child. When he was born she gave him to the Lord to serve at the temple with Eli, the high priest. According to I Samuel 1:1, in what tribe's lands was Samuel's father born into?

Answer: Ephraim

Samuel's father was Elkanah, of the lands of the half tribe of Ephraim (1 Samuel 1:1). 1 Chronicles 6:19-27 tells us Elkanah was, however, a Levite. Samuel anointed the first and second kings of Israel. He was consulted by a medium for King Saul after his death.
8. King Saul was called an impressive man without equal, a head taller than all others. He was anointed by Samuel as Israel's first King, and came from what tribe?

Answer: Benjamin

(1 Samuel 9:1) Saul became king at age 30 and ruled for 42 years. He was the father of Jonathan. Jonathan was loyal to David, who became the next king of Israel.
9. David was anointed by Samuel while Saul was still King. He became the greatest King of Israel, and the New Testament teaches that Jesus was born of the line of David. What tribe did David and Jesus come from?

Answer: Judah

David was the youngest son of Jesse, who was of the tribe of Judah. (1 Samuel 16:12-13)
10. The apostle Paul spread the "Good News" of Jesus Christ and identified himself as a member of what tribe?

Answer: Benjamin

(Philippians 3:5) Saul was first mentioned at the stoning of Stephen, the first Christian martyr. He personally persecuted and arrested Christians until he encountered Jesus in a vision. Saul became Paul, the missionary to the Gentiles, and author of many epistles that became books in the New Testament.
