Bible People and the 'Seven Deadly Sins' Quiz

A Catholic Church doctrine involves the Seven Deadly Sins. I don't subscribe to the doctrine, but thought it would be interesting to compile a quiz on Bible people who committed at least one of the Seven Deadly Sins.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the Seven Deadly Sins is lust and two young women in the Bible suffered immensely as a result of two men unable to control their lust. Scripture states Dinah and Tamar were raped by two men who had immense lust issues. What were the names of the two men? (Genesis 34 and 2 Samuel 13)

Answer: Shechem and Amnon

The correct answer is Shechem and Amnon. According to Scripture, Shechem defiled Dinah, the daughter of Jacob and Leah, while Amnon defiled his half-sister Tamar, the daughter of David and Maacah.

Both men would end up being murdered. Scripture states brothers of the two young women took matters into their own hands. Simeon and Levi, brothers of Dinah, teamed together to kill Shechem as well as every male who lived in his town, which was also named Shechem. Meanwhile, Absalom, the brother of Tamar, killed Amnon.
2. Another one of the Seven Deadly Sins is gluttony. What was the name of the obese king who was killed by Ehud when he plunged a dagger into his massive belly? (Judges 3:12-39)

Answer: Eglon

The correct answer is Eglon, the king of Moab who reigned over Israel for eighteen years, according to Judges 3:14.

Scripture tells of the LORD raising up Ehud, a deliverer for the Israelites. According to Verse 16, Ehud was the son of Gera, a Benjamite, and he was left-handed. The chapter tells of Ehud meeting privately with Eglon in his "cool private chamber", giving the impression he was always sweating because of his obesity.

Judges 3:20-23 goes on to provide gory details about Ehud killing the obese king with a dagger being lunged into Eglon's massive belly. Scripture states, "even the hilt went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade... and his entrails came out."

Then Ehud went out through the porch and shut the doors of the upper room behind him and locked them. Only after some time did Eglon's servants find him dead, and Ehud had made his escape, according to Scripture.
3. Another one of the Seven Deadly Sins is greed. According to Scripture, what woman betrayed her super-strong husband for a large number of pieces of silver? (Judges 16:4-21)

Answer: Delilah

Greed was the simple reason Delilah betrayed Samson, a man with super strength who served as judge of Israel. According to Scripture, she collected a large amount of money for betraying Samson to his adversaries, the Philistines. Judges 16:5 states "the lords of the Philistines" each offered Delilah eleven hundred pieces of silver if she would betray Samson.

Notes in the NKJV Study Bible state there would have been five Philistine lords making the offer of 1,100 sheckels of silver to Delilah. In other words, she was offered 5,500 pieces of silver from the five rulers.

(While there is no mention of five Philistine lords in Judges 16, various other verses in the Old Testament state there were five lords: Joshua 13:3, Judges 3:3, 1 Samuel 6:4, 1 Samuel 6:16 and 1 Samuel 6:18.)

The story of Samson and Delilah is one of the most colorful ones in the Old Testament. According to Scripture, his long hair was the secret to his strength; when his locks were cut, and after Delilah's treachery, he lost his power.

Another prime example of greed is Judas betraying Jesus for thirty pieces of silver, as per Matthew 26:14-16.
4. Sloth and laziness are also part of the Seven Deadly Sins. In a New Testament Gospel, Jesus tells a parable about a foolish man building bigger barns and taking it easy for a season. In what Gospel do you find this parable?

Answer: Luke

Known as the Parable of the Rich Fool, it is found in Luke 12:13-21 and nowhere else in the Bible. The passage tells of the rich fool deciding to take things easy when suddenly God said to him, "This night your soul will be required of you." In other words, all the treasure he had built up was suddenly worthless.

Proverbs 24:33-34 contains a warning about what laziness brings. The verses in the NKJV state:
"A little sleep, a little slumber,
A little folding of the hands to rest;
So shall your poverty come like a prowler,
And your need like an armed man."
5. Cain experienced jealousy and wrath when he opted to kill his brother Abel. Why was he angry as well as jealous of Abel?

Answer: Abel's offerings were much more pleasing in God's eyes.

Cain killed Abel because he was jealous, as well as filled with wrath, because his brother Abel's offerings were more pleasing in God's eyes. According to Genesis 4:2-4, Abel was a keeper of sheep while Cain was a tiller of the ground. The passage states that Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the LORD, but Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. As a result, the LORD "respected Abel and his offering, but He did not respect Cain and his offering."

Scripture goes on to tell of Cain killing Abel and then being exiled to the land of Nod.
6. Envy is one of the Seven Deadly Sins. According to Scripture, King Ahab was extremely envious of a vineyard owned by one of his subjects. What was the name of the vineyard owner, as per 1 Kings 21:1?

Answer: Naboth

Naboth was the man who was killed simply because of the unbridled enviousness of King Ahab and his wife Jezebel. Naboth's story is told in the 21st chapter of 1 Kings.

Scripture states Naboth was a Jezreelite and his vineyard was in Jezreel, close to the palace of Ahab, king of Samaria. I Kings 21:9-10 tells of Jezebel ordering letters be sent to elders and nobles in Naboth's city to 'honor' him at a gala banquet. However, the letters stated two scoundrels were to be seated with Naboth who would accuse him of blaspheming God and the king. After the charges were levied, Jezebel's letters stated Naboth should be taken out and stoned to death.

Sure enough, Jezebel would have her way and her husband would assume ownership of the vineyard.

According to Scripture, Ahab had sulked on his bed, turned away his face and refused to eat as he was so depressed when Naboth had declined his offer to buy the vineyard. 1 Kings 21:2 states Ahab simply wanted Naboth's property to use as a vegetable garden.
7. Pride is yet another Deadly Sin. In fact, one man in the Old Testament was so puffed up with pride he demanded that others bow to him, this even though the man wasn't a king or a head of state. When a certain individual refused to bow to the man, pride took such a hold of him he plotted to kill the one who wouldn't bow to him. FIRST: What's the name of the pride-filled man? And SECOND: What's the name of the man who wouldn't bow to him?

Answer: Haman and Mordecai

The correct answer is Haman and Mordecai. Haman served under King Ahasueres (known as Xerxes in the NIV) of Persia and demanded people bow to him. When Mordecai, a Jew, refused to bow to him, Haman came up with plan to kill all the Jews in the vast area ruled by Ahausures. Haman even had a special fifty cubits high gallows built on which to hang Mordecai. The Easy to Read Version Bible says the gallows was seventy-five feet tall. (In other words, the gallows was to be super high so everyone could see his dead body.)

However, Scripture states Haman was prevented from carrying out his plan for mass genocide when Mordecai teamed up with his cousin, Queen Esther. Scripture tells of Haman being hanged on the very gallows he had constructed to kill Mordecai.

(In addition to a severe case of pride, it seems Haman had some mental issues.)
8. David was filled with lust and envy when he had an adulterous affair with a young woman and, after getting her pregnant, he conspired to kill her husband. The name of the young woman's husband was Uriah. What ethnic group did he come from? (2 Samuel 11:3)

Answer: the Hittites

Uriah was a Hittite, as per 2 Samuel 11:3. According to Wikipedia, the ethnic Hittite minority had lived in and around Canaan since the time of Abraham.

After David learned Bathsheba was pregnant through an adulterous affair he had with her, he ended up conspiring to have Uriah murdered. The adultery took place while Uriah, a soldier, was in battle. After plotting and scheming, David eventually ordered Uriah to be placed in the front line where the fighting was fiercest and then had all the men withdraw, as per 2 Samuel 11:15. True to plan, Uriah was killed.
9. Joseph's brothers were envious and wrathful when the they conspired to murder him, but sold him into slavery instead. According to Scripture, one of the brothers had attempted to thwart the devious move. What was the brother's name? (Genesis 37:22)

Answer: Reuben

Reuben is the correct answer. After discussion about killing Joseph, Reuben convinced his brothers to try a different approach and put the 'little dreamer' in a pit. According to Genesis 37:22, Reuben wanted to free Joseph later and take him back to their father Jacob. The chapter goes on to tell of Judah convincing his brothers to sell Joseph to a group of Midianite traders and when Reuben returned to the pit it was empty.

Despite the horrible treatment Joseph suffered at the hands of his brothers, he was kind and gentle with them when they moved to Egypt with their father Jacob. This even though Joseph was the second most powerful man in the land and could've severely punished his brothers. Genesis 50:19-21 tells of Joseph's humility and generosity while addressing his brothers.
10. Scripture states Satan was greedy, wrathful and envious of God's position and it led to his fall from heaven. (Isaiah 14:12-21 and 1 John 3:8). Meanwhile, Revelation 20:10 states he will end up in "a lake of fire and brimstone." For how long will Satan be entombed in the lake?

Answer: forever

According to Scripture, Satan will be entombed in the lake of fire and brimstone and "will be tormented day and night forever and ever." Also entombed in the lake will be the beast and the false prophet, according to Revelation 20:10.
