Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. U is for "Underling". Which Old Testament Biblical prophet had a servant named Gehazi?

Answer: Elisha

Gehazi was a servant of the prophet Elisha who was obedient to his master for a good while until his personal greed overwhelmed him, with the end result being stricken with leprosy.

For the entire story of his failure to be obedient, read 2 Kings, chapter 5.
2. Okay, we have another U here. U is also for "Uzziah". Which nation did King Uzziah reign over?

Answer: Judah

King Uzziah began his reign over Judah when he was but 16 years old. For some time he was a king that desired to please God, but eventually his pride and sin got in the way of his relationship with God, and he was stricken with leprosy, (just like Gehazi, Elisha's servant).

For a more detailed account of his life read 2 Chronicles 26.
3. Moving on to the letter V... V is for "Verse". A fairly well-known verse in the Bible is the one that speaks of the salvation of man in John 3:16. What does this verse say regarding God's love for the world?

Answer: He gave his only begotten Son so that people would not perish for eternity.

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved."

John 3:16-17 King James Version
4. Let's have another V question here. V is also for "Vanquished". Both Isaiah 25:8 and 1st Corinthians 15:54-57 speak of death as the enemy of man. What do both verses indicate will happen to this foe of mankind?

Answer: it will be swallowed up in victory

Isaiah 25:8
"He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the LORD hath spoken it."

1 Corinthians 15:54-57
"So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."

King James Version
5. We'll move along to the letter W now. W is for "Wisdom". Solomon, arguably the wisest man who ever lived, had what to say about a poor man's wisdom, in Ecclesiastes 9:13-16?

Answer: his words go unheeded

His words are not heard.

"This wisdom have I seen also under the sun, and it seemed great unto me: There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it, Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man. Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard."

Ecclesiastes 9:13-16 (King James Version)
6. It's time for another letter W Bible question. W is also for "Winnowing". What exactly is meant by winnowing?

Answer: a method of separating grain from chaff using the wind

In the book of Ruth, chapter 3 verses 1 and 2, in the King James Version, we see Naomi giving instructions to her daughter-in-law, Ruth.

"Then Naomi her mother in law said unto her, My daughter, shall I not seek rest for thee, that it may be well with thee? And now is not Boaz of our kindred, with whose maidens thou wast? Behold, he winnoweth barley tonight in the threshing floor."

Another reference to the process known as winnowing can be found in Matthew 3:12 (King James Version)"

"Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly (sic) purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire."

Threshing, (the precursor of winnowing), involved the loosening and removal of grains and seeds, while winnowing was often performed by simply tossing the threshed product into the air and allowing the wind to carry away the chaff, or the seed casings of the grain.

Winnowing can certainly be seen as a physical act, but it can also be interpreted from a spiritual viewpoint as well.
7. Ah, now here is a toughie! (That simply means that it was tough to find a word beginning with the letter X.) X is for "Xerxes". By what other name is this king of ancient Persia and its surrounding areas sometimes referred to?

Answer: Ahasuerus

King Ahasuerus, (Xerxes) was the king of Persia during the time of Esther. The King James Version clarifies his territory just a bit by describing it in Esther 1:1 as "...this is Ahasuerus which reigned, from India even unto Ethiopia, over an hundred and seven and twenty provinces."

Read the entire book of Esther for some interesting insights as to the history of the Jewish people.
8. Since X is not that common a beginning for words, let's move on to the letter Y, shall we? Y is for "Youth". What were the names of two of the youngest kings to serve over Judah, their reigns beginning at ages seven and eight, respectively?

Answer: Joash and Josiah

2 Chronicles 24:1 - "Joash was seven years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother's name also was Zibiah of Beersheba."

2 Kings 22:1 - "Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned thirty and one years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Jedidah, the daughter of Adaiah of Boscath."

(Both verses can be found in the King James Version of the Bible.)
9. We'll try another Bible question based on the letter Y. Y is also for "Yellow". What was significant about the color yellow, as it pertained to a head of hair or a beard, in Leviticus 13:29-30? (King James Version)

Answer: the person in question was afflicted with leprosy

Leviticus 13 gives very explicit details for determining if a person had leprosy, a dreaded skin and neurological disease caused by a bacterial infection. This disease was usually transmitted via a cough or from nasal fluids.

"If a man or woman have a plague upon the head or the beard; Then the priest shall see the plague: and, behold, if it be in sight deeper than the skin; and there be in it a yellow thin hair; then the priest shall pronounce him unclean: it is a dry scall, even a leprosy upon the head or beard."
10. And now, for the letter Z. Z is for "Zoo". Zoo, you say? Where in the Bible would you find a zoo? Why, Noah had a floating zoo, didn't he? Other than his wife and himself, how many OTHER people were on the ark with all those animals, according to Genesis 6:18 in the King James Version of the Bible?

Answer: six

"But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons' wives with thee."
(King James Version)

I understand this to imply that there were a total of eight people on the ark. That would included Noah, his wife, their three sons (Ham, Shem and Japheth), and their wives.
