Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For me to live is Christ and to die is ___ (Philippians 1:21)

Answer: Gain

Paul is explaining that his life is devoted to the spreading of the knowledge of Jesus, and that his death, when it comes, will be to gain his place in Heaven. Philippi is in Greece, and was the first place in Europe to have a Christian group.
2. And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my ___ (Luke 1:47)

Answer: Saviour

Earlier in the chapter, Mary has been visited by Gabriel, who gives her the news that she will be giving birth to a son, to be named Jesus. She visits Elizabeth, who tells her how blessed Mary is. The quotation gives Mary's response and follows the line 'my soul doth magnify the Lord', as she accepts the purpose God has for her.
3. ___ not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him (Genesis 22:12)

Answer: Lay

God has tested Abraham's faith by asking him to sacrifice his son, Isaac. When it is seen that Abraham is willing to follow the instruction, God sends an angel to save Isaac, and provides a ram to be sacrificed in his place. The quotation gives the words spoken by the angel to Abraham.
4. The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the ___ (Isaiah 11:6)

Answer: Kid

This chapter begins with the lines 'And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse' and is often taken as foretelling the coming of Jesus, a descendant of Jesse via David. The prophet Isaiah is explaining the influence this person will have, allowing the natural enemies mentioned in the quotation to live in peace with each other.
5. Behold, the tabernacle of God is with ___, and he will dwell with them (Revelation 21:3)

Answer: Men

In Revelation, chapter twenty, the living and the dead are judged, with Satan being cast into the bottomless pit. Chapter twenty-one, where the words of the quotation appear, talk about the 'new heaven and new earth' and tells us that God will now live among men and 'be their God'.
6. And Thomas answered and said unto him, my ___ (John 20:28)

Answer: Lord

Jesus has appeared to the apostles, but Thomas has doubts that he is really seeing the risen Jesus. Having touched the wounds of Christ, Thomas accepts that Jesus is real with the words quoted. Jesus admonishes him, gently, with this response: 'Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.' He is pointing out that true believers do not need proof.
7. ___not; taste not; handle not (Colossians 2:21)

Answer: Touch

Some doubt has been cast on the authorship of this epistle, but it is attributed to Paul in the Bible. There are varying interpretations of the meaning of the quotation, with one being that Paul is advising the Colossians not to be deceived by the false words of their fellow men.
8. God is our ___ and strength, a very present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1)

Answer: Refuge

The whole of Psalm 46 stresses that God is with us whenever there is danger, such as when seas or rivers are wild from storms. The Psalm also promises that He will make wars end and will break the weapons of the warriors. The hymn 'A Mighty Fortress is our God', written by Martin Luther, uses Psalm 46 as its inspiration.
9. Bring hither the fatted ___ (Luke 15:23)

Answer: Calf

These words are from the parable of the prodigal son, who has squandered his inheritance and returned home to his family. The father welcomes him back with open arms, much to the disgust of the older brother, who has worked uncomplainingly for his father. This is one of the parables preached by Jesus, to show that God will pardon a repentant sinner.
10. ___ forgive them, for they know not what they do (Luke 23:34)

Answer: Father

These are the words of Jesus, who has been crucified, knowing he is going to die, yet asking God to forgive the soldiers who have carried out the deed. At the time, they were busily drawing lots to share out the clothing. The words show Jesus asking for mercy on his enemies and are usually interpreted as extending to include all those who have wronged him.
