Do You Know The Gospel of Mark? Quiz

How well do you know the Gospel of Mark? As I was playing the quizes in the Bible category, I noticed there weren't any quizzes on the book of Mark, the shortest of the gospels. I used the NIV translation and the Zondervan NIV Exhaustive Concordance.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Although all four of the gospels talk about the same person, they have different points of view and sometimes give different information. Matthew starts his gospel with the geneology of Jesus. Luke starts with the story of the birth of John the Baptist, Jesus's cousin. The gospel of John begins with a description of one of the names of Jesus. What did Mark start his account with?

Answer: A quote from Isaiah 40:3 and John the Baptist as a grown man

When I first started reading the Bible, I couldn't understand how the four gospel accounts could be similar in some ways, yet so
different in others. Then, I realized that witnesses to an event will act in a similar way. They remember the general incident, but notice different specific things.
2. What was the first recorded miracle in Mark 1:23-26?

Answer: Jesus commands an unclean spirit to come out of a man

These are all miracles of Jesus from the book of Mark. The paralyzed man is lowered through a roof in Mark 2:1-12, the story of Jesus asleep in the middle of a storm is described in Mark 4:35-39 and five thousand men (not including women and children) are fed in Mark 6:35-44.
3. In one instance, unclean spirits make a request before they leave a man. What did they ask?

Answer: To go into a nearby herd of pigs

This story is in Mark 5:1-13. The man who was possessed by demons lived in the area of the Gerasenes, who are also called Gaderenes in some translations - which is why this incident is sometimes referred to as The Gaderene Swine. After the demons left the man and transferred to the bodies of the pigs (2,000 or so), the pigs rushed into the nearby Lake of Galilee and drowned.
4. When Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome went to the tomb of Jesus to anoint his body, how did they roll away the stone that had been set to seal the tomb, according to Mark's gospel?

Answer: It had already been rolled away, so they did not have to do anything.

The gospels do not all have the same details about the discovery that Jesus's body was no longer in his tomb. According to Mark, the stone was already out of the way, so they entered the tomb and were told by a young man dressed in white that Jesus had risen from the dead. Matthew specifies that it was rolled away by an angel, who addressed the women while sitting on the stone.
5. Who were the first two men Jesus called to be his disciples?

Answer: Simon and Andrew

Simon (Peter) and Andrew first appear in Mark 1:16-18. The other men were also disciples of Jesus, but were called later. Simon would later be renamed by Jesus as Peter because of his faith and trust in Jesus.
6. Simon and Andrew were fisherman. According to Mark, what were they doing when Jesus first came by?

Answer: They were casting a net into the sea

They would've done all of these things at various times. I've always wondered what sort of man Jesus was to have caught the attention of two sun-burned, tough and hard-working men. They literally dropped everything and followed him.
7. A woman who had been sick for twelve years came to Jesus for help. What was wrong with her?

Answer: She had a hemorrhage

This unfortunate lady is mentioned in Mark 5:25-34. She trusted Jesus so much that she didn't even want to speak to him, but only needed to touch his clothing.
8. Jesus shows his mastery over water in Mark 6:47-51. What did he do?

Answer: He walked on the water to the disciples' boat

In verse 48, it says, "...and he intended to pass them by". The disciples were so frightend by Jesus' appearance that he got into the boat instead. I wonder where he was going?
9. In chapter 9 of Mark, the transfiguration of Jesus is described. Who appeared during that time?

Answer: Elijah and Moses

The scene is described in Mark 9:2-8. It's interesting that two of the most important men in the Old Testament appeared and defered to him.
10. After the transfiguration, Jesus along with Peter, James and John came down to find that the other disciples had failed at a task. What had they tried to do?

Answer: Cast a spirit out of a boy

When you read the story, can you hear the desperation in the man's voice? His son had a spirit that not only made the boy deaf and unable to speak, but made him fall into fire and water to destroy him. How scared the boy must have been!
