Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Noah is well known as the man who built a gigantic ark in which his family took refuge when the world was engulfed in a massive flood. However, according to Numbers 27:1, a woman was also called Noah.

Answer: True

True. Noah was one of five daughters of Zelophehad. She and her four sisters -- Mahlah, Hoglah, Milkah and Tirzah -- were initially deprived of inheriting their father's land after he died, even though he had no sons to assume ownership as per the custom in Old Testament times.

Numbers 27:1-11 tells of Zelophehad's daughters making Moses aware of their concerns. According to the passage, Moses then conversed with God about the matter and He agreed with the young women. "The daughters of Zelophehad speak what is right," God is quoted as saving in Verse 7 in the NKJV. The passage goes on to tell of Zelophehad's daughters being given tracts of land.
2. A man and a woman both shared the name Noadiah in the Old Testament. The male Noadiah helped weigh gold and silver articles in the house of God, as per Ezra 8:33. Who was the woman called Noadiah, as per Nehemiah 6:14?

Answer: A prophetess

Noadiah was a prophetess who is mentioned in the Book of Nehemiah, part of the Old Testament. She was apparently allied with Tobiah and Sanballat, vehement opponents of Nehemiah's plan to rebuild a wall around Jerusalem.

Information at Biblegateway.com describes Noadiah as a false prophet.

In Nehemiah 5:14 in the NKJV, Nehemiah is quoted as saying: "My God, remember Tobiah and Sanballat, according to these their works, and the prophetess Noadiah and the rest of the prophets who would have made me afraid."

I hope quiz players were able to quickly solve this question through the process of elimination. The question states Noadiah was an Old Testament woman and this rules out the responses, 'a follower of Jesus' and 'the mother of Timothy'. There is no mention in Scripture about Rachel and Leah having a sister, resulting in the only possible answer being 'a prophetess'.
3. Puah is a dual gender name from the Old Testament. The male Puah was a son of Issachar, as per 1 Chronicles 7:1. According to Exodus 1:15, who was the woman called Puah?

Answer: A Hebrew midwife

I hope you were able to quickly answer the question through the process of elimination. Puah was one of two Hebrew midwives mentioned in Exodus 1:15. (The second midwife was Shiphrah.)

It's impossible to find any mention of David and Bathsheba in Exodus. Mary Magdalene is mentioned in the New Testament, not the Old Testament. On top of this, there is no mention of Bathsheba or Mary Magdalene having a sister. As a result, the only possible answer to the question is 'a Hebrew midwife'.

Exodus 1:15-22 tells of Puah and Shiprah defying the Pharaoh's orders to kill all newborn Hebrew male babies.
4. Shelomith was the name of a woman and at least three men in the Old Testament. Leviticus 24:11 states Shelomith's son was stoned for blaspheming God's name. Meanwhile, Shelomith was in charge of the treasury of a king who was the son of Jesse. What was the name of the king Shelomith served under? (1 Chronicles 26:26)

Answer: David

Shelomith was in charge of the treasury of King David, as per Chronicles 26:26. David, of course, was the son of Jesse who was the grandson of Boaz and Ruth. According to Ruth 4:21-22, Boaz and Ruth were the parents of Obed, who was the father of Jesse.

Two other men, both minor characters, were also called Shelomith.

Details about Shelomith's unnamed son blaspheming God and being stoned can be found in Leviticus 24:10-23. According to the passage, Shelomith was married to an unnamed Egyptian man. Her son is not named in the passage.
5. Gomer is yet another dual gender name in the Bible. According to Genesis 10:2, Gomer was a grandson of Noah. Who was the woman who was also called Gomer?

Answer: A prostitute married to Hosea the prophet

Gomer was a prostitute who was married to the prophet Hosea, as per Hosea 1:3.
According to Scripture, Hosea and Gomer were the parents of two boys and one girl. The boys were called Jezreel and Lo-Ammi and the girl was called Lo-Ruhamah.

Hosea 1:2 in the NKJV reports Hosea received divine instructions to take "a wife of harlotry... for the land has committed great harlotry by departing from the LORD."
6. According to Scripture, Abihail was the name of at least two women who were minor characters. (One was the wife of Abishur and the other was the wife of Rehobaom.) At least three men in the Old Testament were also called Abihail. Out of the four choices below, which one best describes one of the men called Abihail?

Answer: The father of Queen Esther

I hope through the process of elimination you were able to come up the correct answer on this one. According to Esther 2:15 and 9:29, Abihail was the father of Queen Esther. However, little is known about him as he is mentioned in passing reference.

Other men called Abihail are mentioned in Numbers 3:35 and 1 Chronicles 5:14. The women called Abihail are mentioned in 1 Chronicles 2:29 and 2 Chronicles 11:18.
7. While there are a number of dual gender names in the Old Testament, none can be found in the New Testament when using Bible versions such as the KJV, NKJV and NIV.

Answer: True

True. There are no New Testament dual gender names. Yes, there are New Testament names like Paul and Timothy that have a female equivalent -- Paula and Timothea. Try as you may, you won't find Paula and Timothea in the Christian Bible.

However, in this quiz the people featured are males and females with exactly the same name. With no male and female in the New Testament sharing the same name, the answer to this question is 'true'.
8. Another example of a dual gender name in the Bible is Athaliah, with the woman being well known and the man being an obscure character. According to Nehemiah 11:4, Athaliah was a son of Uzziah. Who was the woman who was called Athaliah?

Answer: A wicked queen of Judah

Athaliah was a wicked queen of Israel. According to 2 Kings 11:1-3, Athaliah was unstoppable in her lust for power and, after her son Ahaziah, king of Judah died, she took action that boggles the mind. According to the passage, she even killed her grandchildren to ensure she would become queen.

Athaliah's reign was filled with wickedness and she ended up being killed in an uprising.
9. Ephah is a name shared by both a man and a woman. The man was a son of Midian while the woman was a concubine of a man who shares a name with a man who was one of twelve spies commissioned by Moses. What was the name of Ephah's husband?

Answer: Caleb

Caleb, the son of Jephunneh, was one of twelve men who was commissioned by Moses to spy out Canaan before the Israelites moved in to occupy the territory, known as the Promised Land.

Ephah was the concubine of Caleb, the son of Hezron, and he is not to be confused with one of the twelve spies, however. Ephah was the mother of Haran, Moza, and Gazez, as per 1 Chronicles 2:46.

The man called Ephah and the son of Midian is mentioned in Genesis 25:4 and
1 Chronicles 1:33.
10. Hushim, I strongly suspect, is a Biblical name that doesn't leap to mind for many. However, it is yet another dual gender name from the Old Testament.

Answer: True

True. Hushim is a name shared by two men and a woman in the Old Testament, although all three of them are obscure.

Genesis 46:23 tells of Hushim being the son of Dan, one of the twelve sons of Jacob. 1 Chronicles 7:12 tells of another man called Hushim who was the son of Aher.

Meanwhile, a woman called Hushim is mentioned in passing reference in 1 Chronicles 8:8 and 8:11. She was the wife of Shaharaim and the mother of Abitub and Elpaal.
