Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Gospel according to Matthew starts with the genealogy of Jesus. In this four women are named, and one is implied. Which one is implied?

Answer: Bathsheba

Matthew 1:6 reads "... and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias". From this verse we can deduce that the Evangelist means Bathsheba, because in 2 Samuel 1:2 we read that "... Is this not Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite? ". Thamar is mentioned as the mother of Phares and Zara, Ruth as the mother of Obed, Rahab as the mother of Boaz.

At the end of the list, Mary gets a mention.
2. Which Gospel begins with the verse, "The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God"?

Answer: Mark

Mark starts his Gospel with the preaching of John in the desert of Jordan and the baptism of Jesus by John. He describes that John was dressed with camel's hair with a leather belt around his waist, and that he was eating locusts and wild honey. John declared that the one that would come after him was mightier, and that he was not worthy to untie the laces of his sandals.
3. According to Luke 1:3, for whom does Luke write his Gospel?

Answer: Theophilus

Verse 1:3 reads, "It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus". Apart from the name and the fact the Acts are also addressed to him we have no other information in the Bible as to who Theophilus was. In Greek the name means friend of God (the Theo- part is God and -philus is friend).
4. According to John 1, who was the Word?

Answer: Jesus

The complete verse one is "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God". Verse 1:14 reads, "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us", which Christians understand to mean that Jesus was the Word, and has existed since the beginning and he was always with God and he was also God.
5. According to Matthew 5:6, what will happen to "...the poor in spirit"?

Answer: Theirs is the kingdom of heaven

Matthew Chapter 5 has Jesus preaching to the multitude from a mountain near the Sea of Galilee. The meek shall inherit the earth, the merciful shall obtain mercy and those that mourn shall be comforted. The Sermon on the Mount takes up Chapters 5 to 7 in the Gospel according to Matthew.
6. In Mark 2:14, Jesus saw Levi "... sitting at the receipt of custom". Who was Levi's father?

Answer: Alphaeus

The complete verse 14 reads: "And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the receipt of custom, and said unto him, Follow me. And he arose and followed him". Levi or Matthew became one of the four Evangelists. Zebedee was the father of the apostles James and John, Lazarus was the brother of Martha and Maria, and Joseph of Arimathea was the man who administered the burial rites to the dead body of Jesus.
7. According to Luke 7:2, who was the master of the "...servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die"?

Answer: Centurion

Verse 2 starts with: "And a certain centurion's". Jesus started walking towards the centurion's house so that he could heal the dying servant. The centurion said that he was not worthy to have Jesus come into his house, and that he was sure that Jesus would cure his servant by just saying a word. Jesus was so impressed by the man's faith that he cured the servant immediately and he declared that "I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel".
8. John Chapter 3 starts with "There was a man of the Pharisees, named". What was the man's name?

Answer: Nicodemus

Nicodemus came to Jesus by night and they had a conversation together about the kingdom of God, with Nicodemus asking, "How can a man be born when he is old?" and Jesus replying, "Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God". Annas and Caiaphas were high priests who presided over the trial of Jesus. Pontius Pilate was the prefect of Judaea.
9. Verse 28:19 of which Gospel reads, "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost"?

Answer: Matthew

The verse is the penultimate verse in the Gospel with the final verse being, "Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen". These words are spoken by Jesus to the disciples "...into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them". Mark's Gospel contains 16 chapters, Luke's 24 and John's 21.
10. In John's Gospel (Chapter 21) some of the disciples were fishing in the Sea of Tiberias and when they returned to land "they saw a fire of coals there". What was cooking on the fire?

Answer: Fish

Verse 9 of Chapter 21 reads "As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread". Subsequently, Jesus appointed Peter as the head of the church by asking him to "Feed my sheep" and also revealed the way that Peter was going to die "but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee".
