Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to John 20:1-2 (King James Version), what was Mary Magdalene's first reaction to finding Jesus' grave empty?

Answer: She ran to Peter and John

It says in John:1-2, "Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him!" It says in verse 11-16 that Mary Magdalene was the first to speak to Jesus after He had risen. When she first saw Him she did not recognize Him. However, when he called her name she knew right away that it was Him. This relates to John 10:27 when Jesus told the disciples that the sheep hear His voice and follow Him.

2. Jesus provided a foreshadowing of His own death and resurrection when speaking with a woman whose brother had died. To whom was He speaking as he said, "I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live"? (King James Version)

Answer: Martha

In the 11th chapter of John, Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead. Prior to this action he spoke with both of his friend's sisters, Martha and Mary. It was to Martha he was speaking when he told her that He himself WAS the resurrection.

3. Scripture tells of Jesus appearing to the disciples as well as others after His resurrection. In fact, according to 1 Corinthians 15:6, how many people did Christ appear to after His resurrection?

Answer: More than 500

According to Scripture, Jesus appeared to more than 500 people after His resurrection from the dead.

1 Corinthians 15:4-8, in the NKJV, states: "...and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He was seen by Cephas, then by the twelve. After that He was seen by over five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater part remain to the present, but some have fallen asleep. After that He was seen by James, then by all the apostles. Then last of all He was seen by me also, as by one born out of due time."

The passage was written by Paul and when he makes mention of also seeing Jesus, he is referring to the dramatic encounter he had with Christ on the road to Damascus. That encounter, which resulted in Paul's conversion, is recounted in the ninth chapter of Acts.

4. One of the four Gospels tells of dead people coming back to life as Jesus died during His crucifixion. In which Gospel do you find this information?

Answer: Matthew

The information is found in the Gospel of Matthew. In addition to dead people coming back to life, Matthew states the veil of the temple was torn in two "from top to bottom" and there was an earthquake, with rocks splitting. The information is found in Matthew 27:51-53.

To put the verses in context, here's how Matthew 27:50-54 reads in the NKJV: "And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many. So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, 'Truly this was the Son of God!'"

5. According to the Book of John (KJV), what were the last recorded words of Jesus while He was on the cross?

Answer: "It is finished."

Jesus's last Words on the cross, "It is finished", mean so much. First, that He had completed the work that His Father had sent Him to do and that all scripture regarding Him had been fulfilled. Also, it meant that the way to Heaven had been opened once and for all, settled, and finished. You can read Jesus's last words in John 19:30.

6. In the book of Acts, who spoke the following words after Christ's resurrection? "This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses."

Answer: Peter

In Acts 2, Peter preaches a sermon to his fellow Jews and beginning at verse 22 and continuing onto verse 35 he presents an argument for Christ's resurrection.

Part of that sermon may be found below, as taken from the King James Version:

22 "Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:
23 Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:
24 Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it."

7. Luke 24:5-6 (KJV) records the scene when Joanna, Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Jesus along with other women went to the tomb to anoint Jesus's body for burial. The body of Jesus was not there but the women encountered two angels. What is the first thing the angels said to the women?

Answer: "Why seek ye the living among the dead? He is not here, but risen."

Scripture records the women were afraid. The the angels reminded them that Jesus Himself had predicted Him own crucifixtion and resurrection. The women, realizing that Jesus was alive (just as He had said) went and quickly told Jesus's disciples the Good News, but the disciples did not believe them.

8. When the risen Jesus was ready to ascend unto the Father, He promised to send the Holy Spirit. He then walked with His disciples, blessed them and then was carried up to Heaven. Where did this miracle take place?

Answer: Bethany, at the mount of olives

(KJV) Lk. 24:45-52 45 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,
46 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:
47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
48 And ye are witnesses of these things.
49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.
50 And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them.
51 And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven.
52 And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy:

9. In the Gospel of John, Jesus showed Thomas the marks of His crucificsion. What was Thomas' response?

Answer: My Lord, and my God

10. Where were Cleopas and the other man who was with him to when Jesus appeared to them?

Answer: the road to Emmaus

Historians are not sure where Emmaus was, only that it was somehow connected to Jerusalem. The men did not recognize Jesus and when Jesus questioned them about what they were talking about they asked Him if he was new to the town. In verse 25, Jesus called them foolish for not believing what the prophets had prophesied.
