Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does Jeremiah say has gone into captivity in verse 1:3?

Answer: Judah

Lamentations 1:3 "Judah is gone into captivity because of affliction, and because of great servitude: she dwelleth among the heathen, she findeth no rest: all her persecutors overtook her between the straits."

Judah was conquered by the Babylonians. Jeremiah was very grieved by this event.
2. Why are the children desolate in verse 1:16?

Answer: The enemy prevailed.

Lamentations 1:16: "For these things I weep; mine eye, mine eye runneth down with water, because the comforter that should relieve my soul is far from me: my children are desolate, because the enemy prevailed."

When Jeremiah talks of children, he is not just referring to people who are not adults. "Children" refers to the children of God.
3. What emotion is described in the first verse of Chapter 2?

Answer: anger

Lamentations 2:1 "How hath the Lord covered the daughter of Zion with a cloud in his anger, and cast down from heaven unto the earth the beauty of Israel, and remembered not his footstool in the day of his anger!"

God is angry because the people of Israel have not been obeying him.
4. What has happened to Jeremiah's flesh and skin in chapter 3?

Answer: He has become old.

Lamentations 3:4 "Flesh and my skin hath he made old; he hath broken my bones."

I could not find an age for Jeremiah, but according to SimpleBiblestudies.com, Jeremiah became a prophet at age 14 and continued for 40 years.
5. What does Jeremiah say the people should wait for in Lamentations 3:26?

Answer: the salvation of the Lord

Lamentations 3:26 "It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord."

This is a prophetic verse according to the Christian religion. He tells them to wait for salvation. Today, Christians believe that we do not have to wait to be saved because Jesus has already come to earth, so today we don't have to wait for it, we just have to accept it.
6. What bird does he mention in 4:3?

Answer: ostrich

Lamentations 4:3 "Even the sea monsters draw out the breast, they give suck to their young ones: the daughter of my people is become cruel, like the ostriches in the wilderness."

According to wikipedia.com, ostrich parents will fight other ostrich parents in the wilderness and the winner gets both ostriches' young. Taking another's young seems cruel, so this might be an example of how the ostrich can be cruel in the wilderness.
7. What does he say is purer than snow in Lamentations 4:7?

Answer: Her Nazarites

Lamentations 4:7 "Her Nazarites were purer than snow, they were whiter than milk, they were more ruddy in body than rubies, their polishing was of sapphire."

Nazarite comes from the Hebrew word "nazir" which means "consecrated" or "separated" according to wikipedia.com.
8. According to Lamentations 5:9 was it hard for them to get bread?

Answer: Yes

Lamentations 5:9 "We gat our bread with the peril of our lives because of the sword of the wilderness."

Peril means danger; everything has gone bad because of their disobedience toward God.
9. Who was being hanged according to Lamentations 5:12?

Answer: princes

Lamentations 5:12 "Princes are hanged up by their hand: the faces of elders were not honoured."

Again, this verse shows all the trouble Israel is facing because of its disobedience to God.
10. What is the last word of Lamentations in the King James Version?

Answer: us

Lamentations 5:22 "But thou hast utterly rejected us; thou art very wroth against us."

I hope you enjoyed this quiz. The next one will be on Ezekiel.
