Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Book of Mormon prophet and warrior is found standing atop LDS temples throughout the world?

Answer: Moroni

Golden Moroni statues with trumpet in hand stand atop over 100 LDS temples throughout the world. The angel Moroni is believed to be the guardian of the golden plates. In life he was the last author to write on the plates. In death, he was entrusted to guard the plates. On September 21, 1823 he appeared to the young boy Joseph Smith for the very first time. The Angel Moroni tutored Joseph Smith in his youth and when he was deemed ready showed him the location of the buried plates. Moroni had buried the golden plates before he died following a great battle that killed all of his kinspeople.
2. Which of the following texts is not regarded as one of the standard works within the LDS church?

Answer: The Satanic Verses

"The Satanic Verses" were authored by Salaman Rushdie and published in 1988. The writings were inspired in part by the life of the prophet Muhammad. However, the book created a political stir amongst the Muslim community causing Rushdie to have to go into hiding.

The standard texts of the LDS church are the New Testament and Old Testament of the Bible, The Book of Mormon, Pearl of Great Price, and The Doctrine and Covenants.
3. The accepted spiritual leader of a ward or congregation within the LDS Church is which of the following?

Answer: Bishop

The Bishop is called from among the members of the local congregation and serves for an average of four to seven years. The position is unpaid and analogous to a pastor in a parish. The Bishop is generally married and holds both the Aaronic Priesthood and the Melchizedek Priesthood offices.

As the leader of his congregation, he presides over church services, marriages, baptisms, various church ordinances, and works with his advisors to help those who live within the ward boundaries.
4. Women within the LDS religion are collectively members of which vital LDS organization which is a tremendous service-driven institution within the Church?

Answer: Relief Society

There are three separate hours of the Sunday church service. The first hour is the Sacrament where members renew their baptismal covenants and take communion. There are also talks prepared by the ward membership or a monthly opportunity for members to share their testimonies. The second hour is comprised of Sunday School. Lessons are generally taken from the Bible or The Book of Mormon. The third hour sees the men go to Priesthood Quorum and the women to Relief Society. In their respective meetings there are opportunities for fellowship, education, and discussions related to service.

The Relief Society was officially founded on March 17th in 1842 in Nauvoo, Illinois. According to the "LDS Church Handbook," the official purpose of the Relief Society is to "prepare women for the blessings of eternal life by helping them increase their faith and personal righteousness, strengthen families and homes, and help those in need." It is generally accepted as one of the largest and oldest women's service organizations in the world.
5. What is the name that is given to a Temple marriage within the LDS Church?

Answer: Sealing

In the Mormon Church, it is believed that you can be married to your spouse for all time and all eternity. Thus a Temple Sealing under the authority of a Temple "Sealer" binds the husband and wife together for time here in mortality and time beyond this realm.

A Temple marriage is viewed as sacred, and only members of the church that have obtained an ecclesiastical Temple Recommend may enter the Temple for such a ceremony.
6. In the LDS Church, to maintain a Temple Recommend, one must obey the Word of Wisdom. Which of the following substances does NOT go against the Word of Wisdom?

Answer: Ice cream

The leaders of the LDS Church have advised the membership to refrain from consuming addictive substances which generally includes all forms of alcohol, hot teas, coffees, drugs, and nicotine products. The Doctrine and Covenants also advises members to eat meats only sparingly.
7. When a worthy male turns 18 he can then choose to undertake what two-year calling within the LDS Church?

Answer: Missionary

Generally males between the ages of 18-25 and women starting at 19 can choose to enter the mission field. They must successfully complete an interview with their respective Ward and Stake leaders to determine worthiness before embarking upon a missionary calling. Men generally serve two-year missions and women 18-month missions. Callings can be extended in the country of birth or to countries overseas. Those called to countries where English is not the dominant language are invited to attend an intense language school at the Missionary Training Center in Utah.

While on their mission, men and women are partnered with a companion who they must remain with at all times. Most missions involve some level of proselytizing as missionaries go out to teach non-members about the gospel.
8. Which very famous character from the Bible makes an important appearance in the Book of Mormon?

Answer: Jesus Christ

The Book of Mormon actually carries a sub-title: "Another Testament of Jesus Christ."
