Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The book of Proverbs contains a list of "things ... too wonderful for me ... which I know not." Which of the following (in King James Version wording) is contained in the list?

Answer: The way of a man with a maid

The others are "an eagle in the air," "a serpent upon a rock," and "a ship in the midst of the sea" (Proverbs 30:18-19). Amazing, isn't it, that men still get women to fall in love with them (and vice versa)?
2. What Old Testament man lost his rib in order to obtain his bride? (Hint: Think Genesis.)

Answer: Adam

I don't know if he actually agreed to the idea beforehand, but God took out one of his ribs while he was asleep and formed Eve from it. It may not sound too flattering to women until one considers that Adam himself was formed from the dirt. (Genesis 2:20-25)
3. A man named Shechem kidnapped Dinah, Jacob's daughter, and then asked to marry her. Her brothers weren't too thrilled with the idea because Shechem had already hurt and disgraced their sister. What "engagement gift" did they bestow upon their would-be brother-in-law and his family?

Answer: They killed them with a sword

Jacob's boys were pretty hot-tempered, and two of them decided to pay Shechem's city a visit and slaughter them all, after persuading the men to be circumcised. They took their sister back and took all the women of Shechen's city with them as captives. It was no wonder that Jacob said his boys made his reputation "stink!" (See Genesis 34 for the full details).
4. Samson was not the greatest example of true love in the Bible, but he is notable for having "loved" several women. What did he tell his father after coming home from finding the girl he first fell in love with? (King James Version)

Answer: Get her for me...!

He told his father to get her for him. He fell in love with a Philistine girl, and God later used the event to direct him into delivering Israel. Samson did end up marrying the girl, but her father gave her away to Samson's "stand-in" friend after Samson left the wedding in a fit of temper. (See Judges 14 for more details.)
5. What Israelite judge took a well-fortified city to win the hand of his bride?

Answer: Othniel

This young man took up Caleb's challenge and won the right to marry Achseh, Caleb's daughter. I don't think that she was at all against the match, since she seems like the type to have objected if she did. She was Caleb's youngest, his "baby" daughter, and she asked for a pretty impressive wedding gift. Caleb, however, gave her double what she asked for. (Judges 1).
6. The bride and groom in the Song of Solomon were very much in love. Which one of the following is an actual quote from the bride? (King James Version wording)

Answer: I found him whom my soul loveth...and would not let him go

She seems slightly attached to him! :) The earlier verses in this chapter talk about how she sought him out.
This quote is from Song of Solomon 3:4. The others are all carefully crafted look-alikes.
7. What Biblical woman vainly hoped her husband would love her after the birth of their first son?

Answer: Leah

Leah's words at the birth of Reuben testify to this fact in Genesis 29:32. Jacob was tricked into marrying Leah when he loved Rachel. He eventually married both women, but Rachel continued to be his favorite wife. Interestingly, Jacob chose to be buried beside Leah instead of Rachel.
8. Only one of the following endearments is NOT used in the King James Version to describe the bride in the Song of Solomon. Can you pick out which one it is?

Answer: My beloved

"Beloved" refers to the groom. The Jews of that time used their version of the word "sister" much more generally than we do today, and the groom was not very likely to be saying the bride had the same mother and father as he did. Rather, it was considered a term that showed their close relationship with each other. (Song of Solomon 4:10 is one example of all three endearments being used for the bride, except "beloved").
9. Several men in the Bible are credited with loving their wives. Surprisingly, which of the following men is never specifically mentioned in the King James Version of Scripture as having loved his wife?

Answer: Boaz

Boaz likely did love Ruth, but the Bible specifically mentions each of the other men loving at least one of their wives. Isaac loved Rebekah in Genesis 24:67, Jacob loved Rachel (Genesis 29:18), and Elkanah loved Hannah (I Samuel 1:5).
10. The bride in the Song of Solomon did not want something "stirred up" or "awakened" till the groom was ready. What did she not want stirred up? (King James Version)

Answer: Her love

This is in Song of Solomon 8:4. The bride asks the daughters of Jerusalem not to stir up or awaken her love till the groom pleases. She is saving it for the time when he comes to her.
