Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Othniel, the first judge in Israel's history, was whose nephew?

Answer: Caleb's

Judges 3:9 says that Othniel was the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother. Othniel went on to deliver the Israelites from the Mesopotamians (3:10).
2. What tribe of Israel did Ehud, the second judge, come from?

Answer: Benjamin

Judges 3:15 says that Ehud was a Benjamite. It's interesting that God would choose a man from the smallest tribe (Numbers 1) to accomplish great things.
3. Which judge killed 600 Philistines with an ox goad?

Answer: Shamgar

This story only takes up one verse in the Bible, Judges 3:31. The index of proper names in the back of my Bible says that "Shamgar" possibly means "destroyer". Do you think his parents knew what they were naming him?
4. Which judge succeeded in defeating the Canaanites?

Answer: Deborah

This story takes up Judges 4. It's important to note that Deborah was the only woman in Israel's history to be sanctioned by God to be a judge. She was the exception to the rule. Another interesting fact is that Deborah told her captain, Barak, to go into battle, but he wouldn't go unless she went with him. (Jabin was not a judge. He was the king of the Canaanites.)
5. Who did Gideon lead the Israelites in defeating?

Answer: The Midianites

Judges 7:16-25 tells this incredible story. Gideon only had three hundred soldiers, but that only proves that God gives the victory and it's not through anything that man can do.
6. Was Abimelech a judge?

Answer: No

Abimelech was Gideon's son, but he was not a judge. He killed 69 of his brothers, and was then made a king over the people (he took what Gideon didn't, Judges 8:22-23). However, God was supposed to be the king, not a man, and Abimelech died at the hand of a woman. His story is found in Judges 9.
7. The Bible records great things that Tola and Jair did.

Answer: False

They each only have a few verses in the Bible. Tola is in Judges 10:1-2. and Jair is in Judges 10:3-5. The only things that are mentioned are their geneologies and how long they ruled.
8. Jephthah, the ninth judge, was the son of a harlot.

Answer: True

Judges 10-12:7 has his story. He did not have the same mother as the rest of his brothers, and for that reason he was disinherited, and cast out of the family. However, when the Israelites got into trouble, Jephthah was the one they called on to lead them into the battle. Once again, God gave the victory (11:33).
9. How many years did Samson judge Israel?

Answer: 20

Samson, known as the strongest man in the Bible, has several chapters in Judges about him (13-16), and there are many well-known stories there. We don't know everything about his life, though, because in Judges 15:20, it says that he judged for 20 years. Apparently, these were quiet years in Israel's history.
10. Are all of Israel's judges mentioned in the book of Judges?

Answer: No

Most of them are, but Eli and Samuel aren't talked about until I Samuel.
